Alaska Airlines hired Accenture on October 31, 2025, to conduct a comprehensive audit of its technology systems after a series of outages disrupted flights, passengers and financial reporting. The engagement is described publicly as a resilience review—not a takeover of Alaska’s IT department, a wholesale cloud migration or proof that the outages were cyberattacks.
Why Alaska brought in Accenture
Alaska’s announcement followed repeated technology disruptions in 2025. The company said the review would examine its technology environment with the goal of improving resilience, reliability and operational dependability. The public announcement does not say that Accenture will replace Alaska’s data centers, run all of its information technology or guarantee that outages cannot recur.

Later filings referred more generally to a third-party consultant and outside technical experts. They said Alaska was implementing best-practice recommendations, including work intended to improve data-center resiliency, but did not publish a completed audit report or detailed list of findings.

The 2025 outage sequence
| Date | Incident | Disclosed effect |
|---|---|---|
| July 20, 2025 | Internal IT outage | Temporary ground stop for Alaska and Horizon; about 200 canceled flights and an approximately $20 million impact to third-quarter results. |
| October 23, 2025 | Failure at a primary data center | Systemwide ground stop for Alaska and Horizon. A later SEC filing reported approximately 500 canceled flights; Alaska said more than 49,000 passengers were disrupted over two days. |
| October 29, 2025 | Microsoft Azure service outage | Systems and websites used by Alaska and Hawaiian were disrupted, causing delays but no flight cancellations reported in Alaska’s filing. |
| October 31, 2025 | Accenture engagement announced | Comprehensive audit of technology systems aimed at improving resilience and reliability. |
The October 23 event also forced Alaska to cancel its planned third-quarter earnings call. The company initially said the full financial effect was still being assessed. Its contemporaneous SEC disclosures are available at the September 30, 2025 filing and the October 24 filing.
How severe was the October disruption?
Alaska’s own statement counted more than 49,000 affected passengers over two days. A later SEC disclosure used approximately 500 canceled flights, while contemporaneous reporting by GeekWire cited more than 400 cancellations across Alaska and Horizon. Those figures may reflect different reporting windows or updates, so they should not be treated as one perfectly reconciled count.
Alaska attributed the incident to a failure at its primary data center. Contemporary coverage reported the airline’s characterization that it was not a cybersecurity incident. That does not mean Alaska had no cybersecurity risk or other security events in 2025; it means the public explanation for this operational outage was infrastructure failure rather than a cyberattack.

What the audit is likely to examine
Public disclosures identify the scope as Alaska’s technology systems and processes, with particular attention to IT infrastructure and data-center resiliency. A comprehensive resilience review would ordinarily test areas such as:
- Redundancy, failover and recovery-time objectives.
- Whether replicated data and dependent applications can operate at airline scale.
- Disaster-recovery exercises, runbooks and staff readiness.
- Monitoring, incident response and change-management controls.
- Dependencies on cloud providers, networks, identity services and other vendors.
- Degraded-mode operations and passenger communications.
These are normal audit areas, not published Accenture findings. Alaska has not publicly disclosed the exact failed components, Accenture’s recommendations, the audit fee or a completed remediation timetable.
Why an outside review matters
Repeated failures can indicate more than a defective server. An independent firm can challenge internal assumptions, compare controls with large-enterprise and transportation practices, and give executives, directors, investors and regulators a documented view of the risks. It can also clarify ownership when an incident crosses Alaska’s own facilities and a cloud provider’s services.

Alaska’s environment is hybrid: it has retained data centers for critical workloads while moving more guest-facing systems to Microsoft Azure. GeekWire reported that Alaska had increased IT infrastructure spending by nearly 80% since 2019, including redundant data centers and cloud migration. Spending more does not automatically create resilience. A backup site is useful only if applications fail over, data is current, shared dependencies remain available and teams can restore service under realistic load.

On-premises systems provide more direct control but require substantial maintenance and can be exposed to site-specific failures. Public cloud can improve scalability and provide managed infrastructure, while adding provider and shared-control dependencies. Multi-cloud may reduce reliance on one provider, but it also adds integration, skills, observability and governance costs.
The Azure outage illustrates the shared-responsibility problem. A provider can suffer the immediate failure, but the airline still has to design alternate paths, graceful degradation, recovery procedures and accurate communications. The available filings do not establish that cloud migration caused Alaska’s internal data-center failure or that another provider would have prevented the Azure disruption.

Operational and financial stakes
Airline technology is interconnected. Depending on the affected systems, a failure can impede flight dispatch, crew scheduling, check-in, boarding, baggage, reservations, rebooking, flight-status updates or airport interfaces. Alaska has not said that every one of those functions failed during the October event, but the ground stop demonstrates how a technology incident can become an operational crisis.
The company’s later numbers show that this was more than a customer-service inconvenience:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- The July outage reduced third-quarter results by approximately $20 million.
- Alaska’s December guidance attributed approximately $0.25 per share of fourth-quarter pressure to an internal IT and cloud-service-provider outage.
- Its 2025 annual report attributed approximately $50 million of negative pretax earnings impact to technology incidents during the year. That figure is not the same as a single outage’s direct expense or lost revenue.
The annual report is available at Alaska Air Group’s 2025 filing. The December update is at its December 3 filing.

What has happened since the announcement?
By December 3, Alaska said it had engaged a third-party consultant and was implementing recommendations to improve data-center resiliency. In its annual report, the company said outside experts had been brought in to diagnose its broader IT infrastructure.
That is evidence of remediation underway, not evidence that the problem is solved. The annual report continued to warn that additional technology outages could occur. Public filings do not identify which recommendations were completed, whether Alaska has demonstrated full-scale failover, or whether the audit itself has formally closed.
What remains unknown
- The complete technical root cause of the October 23 data-center failure.
- Which applications, networks or shared services created the systemwide impact.
- Accenture’s detailed findings and recommendations.
- The cost of the engagement and the funding, owners and deadlines for remediation.
- How much residual risk sits with Alaska versus cloud and other technology providers.
- Whether future recovery tests have operated successfully at normal airline scale.
Bottom line for passengers and investors
Alaska’s Accenture engagement is a serious response to multiple 2025 technology incidents: an internal outage in July, a primary-data-center failure in October and an Azure disruption days later. The public record supports “audit and remediation underway.” It does not support saying that Accenture took over Alaska’s IT, that the incidents were cyberattacks or that the airline’s outage risk has been eliminated.
