Affinity announced an $80 million Series C on September 9, 2021, led by Menlo Ventures. The dealmaking software company said the round brought its total funding to $120 million; VentureBeat reported a $600 million valuation. Affinity’s pitch was not simply another customer database: it aimed to help teams find and use professional relationships hidden across email, calendars and deal activity.

What happened in Affinity’s 2021 funding round?

Affinity announced the Series C on September 9, 2021. Menlo Ventures led the $80 million round, joined by Advance Venture Partners, Sprints Capital, Pear Ventures, Sway Ventures, MassMutual Ventures, Teamworthy, and ECT Capital Partners, associated with Brian N. Sheth. Affinity said the financing brought its total funding to $120 million. VentureBeat reported the company’s valuation at $600 million; the coverage did not establish whether that figure was pre- or post-money.

Affinity said it planned to use the capital to expand engineering, build artificial-intelligence and machine-learning features, and grow sales and marketing. The company also planned to extend its reach beyond venture capital into investment banking, private equity, real estate, accounting, consulting, law and other professional-services markets. These were plans announced at the time, not evidence that the expansion targets were later achieved. Affinity’s funding announcement and VentureBeat’s contemporaneous report describe the round.

What Affinity meant by relationship intelligence

Founded in 2014, Affinity described its product as a relationship-intelligence platform. It was designed to draw on professional interactions—particularly email, calendar events, contacts and deal activity—to map a team’s connections and provide context before an approach or transaction.

#1 Best Overall

For example, if an investment firm wanted to contact a founder, the software could help identify which colleague had interacted with that person and whether the connection appeared recent. That information could help a team decide whom to ask for an introduction, review relevant history and coordinate outreach. A relationship score or suggested path is an estimate based on available signals, not proof that someone trusts the team or will make an introduction.

How that differs from a conventional CRM

A general-purpose CRM typically centers on records that employees maintain: accounts, contacts, opportunities, pipeline stages, forecasts and activity logs. Affinity’s historical distinction was to capture interaction signals and analyze the organization’s relationship network, rather than relying only on employees to enter every relevant detail. Its positioning was CRM-adjacent: relationship context and network analysis could complement an existing system of record, rather than replace every sales, marketing or service function.

Affinity argued that manual upkeep leaves CRM data incomplete. Its 2021 release cited a company-reported estimate that as many as 70% of company profiles and contact records in traditional CRM systems may be incomplete or outdated. That is Affinity’s claim, not an independently established rate for all CRM systems.

Why dealmakers saw a potential use

In venture capital, private equity, investment banking and professional services, business often depends on access, trust and long-running connections. A useful contact may be known by one person on a team but invisible to colleagues who are sourcing deals, preparing a pitch or identifying a buyer or intermediary. Relationship mapping is intended to make that institutional knowledge easier to find.

  • Deal sourcing and business development: Find colleagues with a connection to a founder, executive, buyer or intermediary.
  • Outreach coordination: Identify relationship ownership and reduce duplicate or poorly timed approaches.
  • Preparation: Review relevant interaction history before a meeting, pitch or diligence conversation.
  • Long-cycle opportunities: Keep track of connections and deal activity that may unfold over months or years.

Affinity’s potential value therefore depended on whether surfacing a useful path or saving relationship research translated into better outcomes. A buyer would need to assess measures such as qualified introductions, warm-versus-cold outreach conversion, time saved, user adoption and deals influenced—not just the volume of email or contacts processed.

What Affinity reported about its scale

In its 2021 announcement, Affinity said its platform had analyzed more than 18 trillion emails and 213 million calendar events, powered more than 500,000 new introductions, and facilitated 10 million warm introductions in total. The company also said it tracked approximately 450,000 deals per month and served more than 1,700 customers in 70 countries. These are company-reported operating figures, not independently audited measures.

VentureBeat reported that Affinity had 125 employees at the time and planned to grow to about 200 the following year. That was a forward-looking 2021 hiring plan, not a verified later headcount.

Why the round mattered—and what it did not prove

The financing showed investor interest in a product category between CRM, sales intelligence and collaboration software: tools that try to make a team’s collective network usable. Menlo Ventures reportedly already used Affinity as a customer before leading the investment, offering one investor’s direct experience with the product. That detail is relevant context, but one customer-investor relationship does not establish broad product-market fit.

The capital gave Affinity room to pursue new industries and build more AI- and machine-learning-based features. But the announcement did not establish revenue growth, retention, profitability, lasting adoption, the success of the planned expansion or whether the reported valuation held over time. Nor did an $80 million round show that Affinity had displaced established CRM systems.

The trade-offs behind automatic relationship mapping

Workplace privacy and governance

Analyzing email and calendar activity can expose sensitive professional information. Before adopting a system of this kind, an organization needs clear answers about what data is collected, how irrelevant or personal communications are handled, employee notice and consent, opt-out options, access permissions, retention and deletion, and audit trails. The 2021 funding announcement does not answer those operational questions, so it cannot support assumptions about particular safeguards.

Relationship signals are imperfect proxies

Frequent communication does not necessarily mean a strong relationship, and a quiet connection may still be valuable. A short exchange can matter more than many routine messages; response speed may reflect workload rather than affinity; and someone who knows a prospect may not be willing to introduce them. Relationship intelligence can point a team toward a possible path, but people still need to judge whether it is appropriate.

Identity matching and integration matter

The system must distinguish people with similar names, match duplicate contacts and changing email addresses, account for company moves, and avoid confusing assistants, shared inboxes or group communications with a direct relationship. Mistakes can lead to false warm paths or outreach to the wrong person. The value of the product also depends on how well it fits a firm’s email, calendar, CRM and collaboration systems; integration coverage should be confirmed for a buyer’s actual stack.

A specialized layer is not necessarily a full CRM replacement

Organizations that primarily need forecasting, marketing automation, customer support, quoting, billing or extensive workflow customization may need broader CRM capabilities. General systems such as Salesforce, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales serve wider sales and business-process needs. DealCloud has a more vertical deal-management orientation, while 4Degrees is another relationship-intelligence option for private-market professionals. Data services such as PitchBook, Crunchbase and CB Insights focus more on external company and market intelligence than a firm’s internal relationship history.

Some small teams may get enough from a standard CRM, spreadsheets, email searches and shared institutional knowledge. A specialized relationship platform makes most sense when missed introductions, fragmented deal history or uncoordinated outreach have a meaningful cost. More shared communication data may improve coverage, but it also raises the stakes for employee adoption and governance and can make a firm dependent on a relationship graph that may be difficult to reproduce elsewhere.
