Affiniti Raised $17 Million in May 2025, Six Months After Its $11 Million Seed

Affiniti’s May 2025 Series A backed a vertical-focused fintech for small businesses. Its reported customer and transaction figures show momentum, but leave key questions about revenue, margins, retention and lending risk unanswered.

Affiniti announced a $17 million Series A led by SignalFire on May 20, 2025, about six months after an $11 million seed round. The company, founded by Aaron Bai and Sahil Phadnis—then reported to be 20 and 22—was selling expense-management cards and software to small businesses such as pharmacies, contractors and auto dealerships. Its financing story is less about founder age than about whether a vertical-focused fintech can turn trusted industry relationships into a durable way to serve businesses with specialized financial workflows.

What Affiniti raised—and what the financing figures mean

TechCrunch reported the Series A and earlier seed on May 20, 2025. SignalFire led the new equity round. The same report described a separate debt facility, which should not be added to the equity total or treated as fully drawn cash.

Financing Reported details
Seed round $11 million, raised about six months before the Series A, according to TechCrunch.
Series A $17 million, led by SignalFire. Other participants named in the report were Contrarian Thinking Capital, Yahya Mokhtarzada and Austin Rief; seed investors Indicator Ventures, LightShed Ventures and RiverPark Ventures also participated.
Reported equity total $28 million across the seed and Series A, adding the two reported rounds.
Separate debt facility $15 million, described as expandable to $50 million. The report did not establish how much had been drawn, the facility’s terms or its specific use.

SignalFire’s investor account presents the company as an opportunity to bring more tailored financial tools to traditional small businesses. That is an investor’s thesis, not independent proof that Affiniti has become a category leader or that its channel is exclusive.

What Affiniti was building

At the time of the announcement, Affiniti offered customizable business expense-management cards and software. Its reported features included custom cash-back rewards, native QuickBooks files rather than only CSV exports, and short-term loans of up to 90 days against invoices. The company’s stated target included businesses such as pharmacies, HVAC contractors, podiatry practices and auto dealerships.

The distinction matters: the product was not simply a card with a new brand. Affiniti was aiming to connect spending and expense workflows with the day-to-day financial needs of operational businesses that may not have a dedicated finance team. Such businesses can face vendor payments, receipt tracking, bookkeeping exports and short-term cash-flow gaps across disconnected systems. That does not mean banks or established card issuers fail to serve them; the proposed opportunity is more specialized workflows and distribution.

Reported capabilities and planned expansion

  • Reported as available: expense-management cards and software, custom rewards, QuickBooks file exports, and short-term invoice-backed loans.
  • Described as planned or expanding: banking, bill pay, cash-flow analytics, and integrations with enterprise-resource-planning (ERP) and point-of-sale (POS) systems.

Those roadmap items should not be read as proof that the full set was live in May 2025. The reporting available for the announcement does not establish their later launch status.

Why raise a Series A so soon after the seed?

The clearest reported explanation is traction. Affiniti said it had reached 1,800 customers and about $20 million in monthly transaction volume within its first 14 months. The founders also described revenue as having grown roughly tenfold over the preceding year. Those are company-reported figures; the customer definition, precise revenue amount and underlying financial statements were not disclosed in the reporting.

The founders also said Affiniti was aiming to process $1 billion in transactions by the end of 2025. That was a target, not a confirmed result. The available reporting does not establish whether the company met it.

A short gap between rounds can reflect investor interest in financing a company while its momentum is building, but that is an interpretation—not a confirmed explanation for this round. The stated expansion plans also help explain why additional capital could be useful:

  • Build a broader product: banking, bill pay, analytics and system integrations require engineering and, depending on the product, external partnerships and operational capabilities.
  • Develop distribution: Affiniti said it was using industry trade groups to validate its offering and reach potential customers, rather than trying to sell immediately to every small business.
  • Support financial products: card programs and lending can involve funding and working-capital needs in addition to the cost of building software. The separate debt facility is distinct from the equity raise, but its purpose and drawdown were not specified.

The strategic bet: sell through industries, not just to “small business”

Affiniti’s reported go-to-market approach centers on partnerships with industry trade groups. Those organizations may offer access to members, credibility with operators and a channel for benefits such as group-purchasing discounts. The founders said the company was concentrating on a limited number of verticals with complex cash-flow needs rather than trying to serve all U.S. small businesses at once.

Rank #3
Finance Record Book for Small Churches
  • Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
  • 5 3/16" x 9"
  • Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements

This is a different wedge from competing only on card design or rewards. If an association helps a fintech earn trust and reach businesses that are difficult to acquire through broad advertising, it can make a focused product more useful and potentially more efficient to distribute. But the reporting did not establish how many customers came through these partnerships, whether any relationships were exclusive, how the partnerships were compensated, or how well referred customers stayed active. Trade-group distribution is a plausible advantage, not yet a demonstrated moat.

How the business could make money—and where the risks sit

TechCrunch described three potential revenue sources: card interchange, software fees and interest income from short-term loans. Their economics differ, and the reported transaction-volume figure does not tell readers how much Affiniti earned or kept.

Card interchange

Interchange is linked to eligible card transactions, not equal to the amount customers spend. More card volume can create more opportunity for revenue, but it does not establish strong margins. Card mix, network rules, regulation and customer concentration can all affect the economics.

Software fees

Software subscriptions can provide recurring revenue and help tie a customer’s workflows to the platform. Their value depends on how many businesses pay, what they pay, retention and the cost of providing and maintaining the service. The reported coverage did not disclose Affiniti’s software revenue or fee structure.

Short-term lending

Invoice-backed loans may address a real timing gap between paying expenses and collecting from customers. They also expose a lender or financing partner to repayment delays, disputed invoices, credit losses and funding costs. The report did not specify Affiniti’s underwriting arrangement, lending partners, loan balances, delinquency or charge-off rates.

For a fintech, the important measures are not interchangeable: customer count is not the same as active card users; transaction volume is not revenue; revenue is not gross profit; and a debt facility’s capacity is not the amount borrowed. To judge the quality of growth, readers would need definitions and figures for active customers, average spend, recurring revenue, gross margin, retention, credit performance, customer concentration and cash burn. Those details were not established in the announcement reporting.

How Affiniti differs from Brex, Ramp and traditional card providers

Brex and Ramp are useful reference points for modern business cards and spend-management software. Affiniti’s stated focus is narrower: operational small businesses and industry-specific workflows, rather than primarily technology startups or larger, digitally mature companies. Its proposed differentiation is vertical depth and broader cash-flow tools, not simply another card interface.

Traditional providers are also substitutes. American Express business cards and Capital One small-business cards offer established card options, while accounting and business-management software can handle parts of the workflow. A business comparing them should check the actual combination it needs—card controls, accounting exports, bill pay, financing, support and industry-specific integrations—rather than assume one provider replaces all the others.

The available reporting does not show Affiniti displacing these providers, winning on price, or offering every planned capability. Its strategic case depends on whether it can make specialized workflows materially easier for its target businesses and acquire them efficiently.

What the financing does—and does not—prove

The May 2025 announcement described a fast-growing company with a focused customer strategy and ambitions to broaden its financial product suite. It did not establish profitability, revenue scale, customer retention, lending performance, the amount of debt drawn, or the durability of the trade-group channel. Nor does it establish Affiniti’s funding, customer count, product availability or operating status as of October 8, 2026.

The test for Affiniti is whether it can turn a narrow distribution wedge into a genuinely useful financial platform without losing focus or weakening underwriting discipline. The funding cadence and reported activity make that an important business bet; they are not, on their own, evidence that the bet has paid off.
