Affiliate marketing websites and programs connect a marketer’s content or audience with brands that pay commissions for qualifying sales or other actions. Start by checking whether a program fits your audience and location, then compare its approval rules, tracking, commission conditions, payout terms, and disclosure requirements. No platform guarantees earnings.

How affiliate marketing websites and programs work

An affiliate program gives a publisher a way to refer an audience to an advertiser. The publisher uses a trackable link or other approved placement; if a visitor completes an action the program recognizes, the advertiser may pay a commission under its terms. Amazon, for example, describes specially tagged links to its properties and commissions on qualifying purchases or actions, subject to program limitations and its current commission statement. A network can help publishers find advertisers and manage tracking, but it does not make every advertiser’s rules identical. Awin describes a directory of advertisers and campaigns, trackable links or images, and commissions on approved sales referred from publisher properties. Individual advertisers may set their own terms and approval criteria. Awin publisher information

Two places marketers can start

Program or network What it offers What to verify
Amazon Associates A retailer program for eligible websites, social media user-generated content, online software applications, and Alexa skills using specially tagged links. Amazon describes commissions of up to 10% for qualifying purchases and programs; this is a maximum, not a typical or guaranteed rate. Current commission category, qualifying actions, program limitations, channel eligibility, and all agreement terms. Amazon says its agreement was updated October 15, 2025. Awin A publisher network that describes advertiser discovery, campaigns, trackable links or images, and commissions on approved referred sales. Its US affiliate-partner page reports access to more than 30,000 brands and no setup fees for affiliate partners; these are company-reported US page claims, not independent measures. How to compare programs before applying

  1. Check audience and geography. Confirm that the advertiser serves the locations where your audience lives and that your publishing channel qualifies.
  2. Assess advertiser fit. Look for offers that genuinely match your subject and solve a relevant reader need. A large directory is useful only if it contains suitable advertisers.
  3. Read approval and promotion rules. Determine whether an application is required and whether your website, social account, or other channel is accepted. Check restrictions on how and where links may be promoted.
  4. Understand tracking and attribution. Find out which actions count, how referrals are tracked, and what attribution rules apply. A click alone may not qualify for a commission.
  5. Review commission and payment terms. Check the qualifying action, how commissions are approved, and when and how payment is made. Do not infer likely earnings from a network’s headline brand count or an advertised maximum rate.
  6. Check disclosures and policies. Review the program’s disclosure requirements alongside applicable platform rules and the laws that apply to your audience and business.

Terms vary by advertiser and can change. The linked program pages describe their respective offerings; they are not a complete, current comparison of every network or merchant.

Disclose affiliate links clearly

A commission relationship can affect how readers weigh a recommendation. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises that disclosures be clear and conspicuous. Its example wording is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Place the disclosure where readers encounter the recommendation or link, rather than relying on a notice they may not see. FTC disclosure guidance

Amazon has additional requirements for its Associates. Its help page gives “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned” as examples of clear link-level disclosures. Its agreement also requires the site statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Follow the current program requirements as well as applicable legal and platform rules. What affiliate marketing can—and cannot—promise

Affiliate commissions depend on qualifying actions and program terms, including approval and attribution rules. A published maximum rate is not a typical rate, and access to many advertisers does not establish that a particular audience will convert. No industry-wide typical earnings figure is established by the sources cited here, so treat income forecasts as dependent on your audience, content, advertiser fit, and applicable terms—not as guaranteed results.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
