The Aer Lingus pilots’ pay negotiations and strike action in this headline refer to the 2024 dispute, not a strike shown to be underway now. Direct talks ended without agreement on 27 June 2024. The dispute was later settled after Aer Lingus accepted a Labour Court recommendation and pilots voted for it in July.
What happened in the 2024 dispute?
On 27 June 2024, Aer Lingus said a direct meeting with the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA), a Fórsa branch representing Irish professional pilots, had ended without resolution. The airline said it wanted productivity and flexibility changes, including modernised agreements, as part of its case for a pay increase beyond the 12.25% increase already agreed with other collectively bargained groups. That is Aer Lingus’s description of its position and the talks. Aer Lingus’s statement
The dispute had already moved through an earlier Pay Tribunal process. Fórsa reported that 98.1% of IALPA members who voted rejected the offer, with turnout just over 96%. Fórsa described that offer as 8.5% consolidated pay plus a 1.5% once-off, non-pensionable payment over three years, conditional on structural changes. Fórsa’s account of the vote and offer
How did the offers differ?
| Offer | Reported pay terms | Process and outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier Pay Tribunal offer | Fórsa reported 8.5% consolidated pay plus a 1.5% once-off, non-pensionable payment over three years; it was conditional on structural changes. | IALPA members rejected it: 98.1% voted against, on turnout of just over 96%, according to Fórsa. Fórsa |
| Later Labour Court recommendation | RTÉ reported a 17.75% pay increase. | Aer Lingus accepted the recommendation; Fórsa said IALPA recommended acceptance, and pilots subsequently voted in favour. RTÉ Fórsa |
These are separate proposals from different stages of the dispute. The percentages should not be added together or treated as interchangeable measures of the final deal.

Did the pilots accept the deal, and did they strike?
Yes. After Aer Lingus accepted the Labour Court recommendation and IALPA recommended it, pilots voted 85% in favour in July 2024, ending the industrial action connected to this dispute, The Irish Times reported. The Irish Times
The Irish Times also reported IALPA’s calculation that pay and allowance changes would leave members 19.2% better off by the end of 2026. That is the union’s projection, not an independently verified figure in the reporting cited here; it is also distinct from RTÉ’s reported 17.75% pay increase in the Labour Court recommendation. Are Aer Lingus pilots still striking?
The reported July 2024 vote ended the industrial action associated with that pay dispute. The available reporting cited here does not establish whether a separate negotiation or strike began after that settlement, so the 2024 headline should not be read as confirmation of a current strike.
