Flights between Manchester and Ireland operated by Aer Lingus and Aer Lingus Regional were not affected.
What Aer Lingus announced
The closure followed an earlier period of uncertainty. On January 8, Aer Lingus had suspended sales for Manchester transatlantic travel from March 31 while it considered the base’s future, saying the step was intended to limit disruption if the base closed. The airline confirmed the decision on January 28 and announced a phased reduction beginning in mid-February. RTÉ reported the confirmation, while Aviation Week covered the earlier sales suspension.

Which routes were affected—and which continued
The closure concerned Aer Lingus’s transatlantic operation from Manchester, not every Aer Lingus flight serving the airport. The affected long-haul destinations were New York, Orlando and Barbados.

These are the dates and service scope in Aer Lingus’s January 28 announcement as reported by RTÉ. They describe the announced schedule changes; they do not establish the final operating status of every individual flight.

What affected passengers were offered
Aer Lingus said it would contact affected customers with reaccommodation and refund options. It also planned Dublin–Barbados service in April and May, subject to the necessary approvals, to help reaccommodate affected customers. That plan was not a guarantee that every passenger would travel on that service or receive a particular alternative. Aer Lingus’s media centre later listed a Dublin–Barbados announcement for spring 2026, but that listing alone does not establish the route’s final operating outcome. If you held a booking on one of the affected transatlantic routes, the practical next step was to follow the airline’s direct contact and booking instructions and review the options offered for that itinerary. The available reporting does not establish the final arrangement made for each customer.

Why the Manchester base was closing
IAG’s FY2025 annual report said that, after reviewing the base’s long-term viability, Aer Lingus decided in January 2026 to cease Manchester transatlantic operations and redeploy the assets in line with strategic priorities. That is attributed reporting, not an audited profitability figure, so it does not support a precise estimate of the base’s earnings or the cost of closing it.

What was known about employees
RTÉ reported that about 200 people worked at the Manchester base. That estimate should not be read as a final count of redundancies: Aer Lingus said discussions with staff representative groups would continue, including on the phased reduction, redeployment opportunities within Aer Lingus or IAG, and severance terms. The available reporting does not establish the final number affected, how many were redeployed, or the outcome of consultation.
