RTÉ reported that the airline planned 124 cancellations during an IALPA work-to-rule and a further 120 on June 29, when pilots held an eight-hour strike. The reports describe a past event; they do not establish whether Aer Lingus has a separate current disruption.
What happened in June 2024?
On June 23, 2024, RTÉ reported that Aer Lingus had confirmed at least 244 cancellations for the five days from Wednesday, June 26, through Sunday, June 30. The total comprised 124 flights already cancelled during the first five days of pilots’ work-to-rule and 120 further cancellations planned for Saturday, June 29, during an eight-hour strike by pilots represented by the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA). RTÉ’s June 23 report gave the airline’s estimate that the Saturday cancellations would affect 15,000 passengers.
The Irish Examiner reported that the Saturday cancellations affected short-haul services. It said Aer Lingus retimed long-haul services on June 28 and 29 to avoid cancelling them. The Irish Examiner’s report also noted that Aer Lingus Regional flights numbered EI3000–EI3999 and operated by Emerald Airlines were unaffected at that time. That was a statement about the June 2024 disruption, not a standing guarantee for other dates.
Why were pilots taking industrial action?
The dispute concerned pilot pay. RTÉ reported that Aer Lingus said it had sought direct talks on increases beyond a 12.25% rise agreed with other collectively bargained groups, conditional on productivity and flexibility changes. IALPA was seeking a 24% increase and argued that its claim reflected inflation since the previous increase. These were the positions reported from the airline and union, not settled findings about the merits of either side’s claim.

What options did Aer Lingus offer affected passengers?
For the June 2024 cancellations, the Irish Examiner reproduced an Aer Lingus statement saying some customers had been automatically rebooked, while other customers were being emailed about their options: change their flight for free, request a refund, or request a voucher. Those historical arrangements do not confirm what Aer Lingus will offer for a different cancellation. If you have a current booking, check its status and the airline’s notice for that specific flight.
What should you do if your flight is cancelled?
- Check the flight and operating carrier. Confirm the status directly with the airline and identify which carrier operates the flight. Keep the cancellation message and itinerary.
- Choose between reimbursement and rerouting. Under the European Commission’s general guidance, passengers whose flights are cancelled are entitled to reimbursement or rerouting, as well as assistance. Consider your onward travel and arrival needs before choosing. The Your Europe air-passenger guidance explains these options.
- Keep receipts for reasonable care costs. If you need assistance while waiting, retain receipts and relevant messages. The applicable entitlement depends on the circumstances of your journey.
- Handle compensation as a separate question. A refund or rerouting does not itself decide whether compensation is due. If you believe you qualify, make a separate claim with the carrier and keep the cancellation notice and any rerouting offer.
Can you get compensation if pilots go on strike?
Possibly, but a strike does not automatically mean compensation is owed. Under the European Commission’s general EU guidance, compensation may be due when a cancellation is notified less than 14 days before departure, subject to the specific notice and rerouting rules. An airline may avoid compensation if it proves extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if it had taken all reasonable measures.

The Commission distinguishes strikes by the airline’s own staff from external strikes: its guidance says internal staff strikes do not count as extraordinary circumstances for this purpose, while external strikes may qualify. That distinction is relevant, but it does not replace checking the notice timing, rerouting details, operating carrier, route, and law applicable to your claim. The Commission’s air-passenger rights FAQ says a refund should be received within seven days. For an individual case, consult the applicable authority or the carrier.
