Adidas Data Breach: Did It Affect Millions of U.S. Customers?

Adidas’s “few million” U.S. customer disclosure dates to 2018. The 2025 customer-service-provider incident and 2026 licensing-partner report had different scopes.

The “millions” claim refers to Adidas’s June 2018 disclosure about some U.S. adidas.com customers—not to the separate incidents reported in 2025 and 2026. Adidas said the 2018 data included contact details, usernames and encrypted passwords, and that it had no reason to believe credit-card or fitness information was affected. The later reports involved third-party systems, with different audiences and data.

Was Adidas hacked, and did the breach affect millions?

Adidas disclosed in June 2018 that an unauthorized party claimed to have acquired limited data associated with certain U.S. consumers who had shopped on adidas.com. The company’s preliminary investigation identified contact information, usernames and encrypted passwords. Adidas did not publish an exact affected-person count in its release; Scripps News reported the scale as “a few million,” attributing that wording to Adidas.

That estimate describes the 2018 U.S. incident only. It is not evidence that millions of customers were affected by the later events.

How do the Adidas incidents differ?

Disclosure System and audience Data and scale Payment information and Adidas platforms Reported status
June 2018 An unauthorized party claimed to have acquired data associated with certain U.S. adidas.com consumers. Adidas’s release did not specify whether its own system or another system was the point of access. Contact information, usernames and encrypted passwords, according to Adidas’s preliminary investigation. Adidas gave no exact count in its release; Scripps News described “a few million” online shoppers. Adidas said it had no reason to believe credit-card or fitness information was affected. Adidas said it was investigating. Its release described a preliminary finding.
May 2025 A third-party customer-service provider; consumers who had previously contacted its help desk. Adidas did not publish a geographic scope in the reported statement. Mainly contact information, according to Adidas. The Register reported that Adidas declined to estimate the number of affected people. Adidas said passwords and payment-related information were not included. The incident was at the provider, not described as an Adidas e-commerce platform breach. Adidas said it was notifying potentially affected customers and relevant data-protection and law-enforcement authorities.
February 2026 An independent licensing partner and martial-arts distributor with its own IT systems. The report did not establish that Adidas customers generally were affected. Criminals alleged that 815,000 rows had been stolen, including names, email addresses, passwords, birthdays, company names and technical data. This was an unverified claim about rows, not a confirmed count of Adidas consumers. Adidas said there was no indication its IT infrastructure, e-commerce platforms or consumer data were affected. The report did not establish payment-card exposure. Adidas described a potential incident at the partner. The alleged count and data description were not independently verified in The Register’s report.

What Adidas customer information was exposed?

For the 2018 U.S. disclosure, Adidas’s June 28 statement said its preliminary investigation found contact information, usernames and encrypted passwords. “Encrypted” does not mean a password can be used as-is, but it is still sensible to change that password anywhere it was reused and replace it with a unique one. Adidas said it had no reason to believe credit-card or fitness information was affected.

The later disclosures have narrower, distinct scopes: Adidas described the 2025 provider incident as mainly involving contact information, and said passwords and payment-related data were not included. For the 2026 partner report, Adidas said there was no indication its own consumer data or e-commerce platforms were affected; the larger-sounding figure came from criminals’ allegation about rows of data, not a verified customer total.

How can I tell if I was affected, and what should I do?

The reported “few million” figure is not an exact list of people, and the available statements do not establish a public lookup tool that confirms an individual’s status. Check Adidas’s official data-security information and communications reached by navigating directly to adidas.com rather than following links in an unsolicited message. For the 2025 incident, Adidas said it would notify potentially affected customers; a message claiming to be such a notice should still be verified through an official channel.

  • If you reused a password associated with an Adidas account, change it on Adidas and on every other service where it was reused. Use a different, strong password for each account.
  • Enable multifactor authentication where available, especially on your email account and shopping accounts.
  • Treat unexpected emails or texts about Adidas orders, refunds or account checks cautiously. Do not use a message link to enter a password, payment details or account-confirmation information; open the official site or app independently instead.
  • If you receive a message that appears to be from Adidas, confirm it through official Adidas support or the company’s published security information before responding.

Contact details can make a convincing phishing or social-engineering message easier to personalize. Javvad Malik, lead security awareness advocate at KnowBe4, warned that the theft of personal contact details can create those risks even when payment data was not compromised.

Is the 2026 Adidas breach real, or was it a third-party partner?

The February 2026 report concerned a potential data-protection incident at an independent licensing partner and martial-arts distributor, not a confirmed breach of Adidas’s own consumer platforms. Adidas told The Register there was “no indication” that its IT infrastructure, e-commerce platforms or consumer data were affected. The alleged 815,000 rows should therefore not be described as 815,000 Adidas customers; the figure and contents were claims attributed to criminals, not a confirmed count.
