Adam Ely did join Fidelity Investments as chief information security officer in May 2021, after serving as Walmart’s vice president and deputy CISO. The announcement was reported on May 17, 2021—not in 2026. Public biographies later place Ely in Fidelity’s digital-products leadership, while Check Point identifies him in 2026 as its General Manager of AI Security. That makes the appointment historically significant, but it is not evidence that he remains Fidelity’s current CISO.
What happened in May 2021?
SecurityWeek reported on May 17, 2021, that Adam Ely had joined Fidelity Investments as chief information security officer. The report described him as moving from Walmart, where he was vice president and deputy CISO. Fidelity is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. This was an executive personnel move, not a breach disclosure, product launch, acquisition or regulatory filing.
The contemporaneous report is the clearest source for the appointment itself: SecurityWeek’s May 17, 2021 report.
Adam Ely’s security career before Fidelity
Ely brought a combination of large-enterprise security leadership and startup product experience.
#1 Best Overall
Walmart security leadership
Before Fidelity, Ely was Walmart’s vice president and deputy CISO. His Walmart background included responsibility associated with enterprise security and e-commerce security, giving him experience in a global, consumer-facing organization with a large digital attack surface.
Bluebox Security
Ely was a founder or co-founder of Bluebox Security, a security company acquired in 2016. The exact founder wording varies among biographies, so “co-founder” is the cautious description used by Check Point’s biography.

- Bundle: 4 locks plus 1 key.
- Easy to Use: It can be installed by hand.
- All-Purpose Key: A common key can be used to unlock 9 different products within the Essential series.
Disney, Salesforce and other technology roles
Institutional biographies associate Ely with security work at The Walt Disney Company, Salesforce-related organizations and TiVo-related technology. They describe experience spanning security operations, application security and product development, but do not provide a single, fully dated chronology for every employer. Check Point’s leadership biography summarizes this progression at its leadership page.
Why the Fidelity CISO appointment mattered
A CISO at a major financial-services firm operates in a particularly demanding risk environment. Security programs must protect customer accounts, identity systems, trading and investment infrastructure, fraud controls, sensitive data, third-party connections and business continuity. They also have to support regulatory obligations and preserve customer trust during disruptive incidents.

- Smart Keeper Lock Key Basic (required for removal): must be the same color- Sold Separately or as a bundle of 6 locks and 1 key
- Easy to Use: It can be installed by hand.
- Various Patterns: Multiple color patterns are available.
- All Purpose Key: A common key (must be the same color) can be used to unlock 10 different products within the Essential series.
- Enhanced Security: Four security holes for secure fit.
Ely’s background was notable because it combined security operations in very large companies with experience building a security product. That mix is relevant to a firm balancing established financial infrastructure with consumer digital products. It does not, however, prove that he introduced a particular platform, architecture, policy or transformation program at Fidelity; no such initiative is identified in the appointment report.
What Fidelity and Ely later said about cybersecurity
A 2022 Fidelity interview provides context about the company’s public security posture, but it is separate from the 2021 hiring announcement. In the interview, Ely said financial-services companies operate with a high level of alert because attacks are frequent. Fidelity described planning for both probable and improbable attack scenarios and using intelligence from government sources, peer companies and its own research.
Rank #4
The discussion covered protection of individual customer accounts as well as the firm as a whole. Ely also described a customer-protection guarantee intended to address certain customer losses caused by fraud or attacks. Its scope should be read according to Fidelity’s stated terms; it is not an unlimited promise covering every possible cyber loss. The full transcript is available from Fidelity at “A Conversation on Cyber Security”.
What happened after Ely’s CISO role?
The public record shows a later move from security leadership into digital-product management.

Check Point’s leadership biography says he subsequently led Fidelity’s Digital group, including AI-product and center-of-excellence organizations, before joining Check Point. Check Point also quotes him in an announcement at this press release and publishes his analysis of the CISO’s changing role in this article.

A FINRA BrokerCheck report downloaded in 2026 lists Ely’s Fidelity employment as “May 2021–present” and gives the title “Head of Cybersecurity.” That entry conflicts with Columbia’s description of his Fidelity digital-products role and Check Point’s identification of him as a Check Point AI-security executive.
BrokerCheck employment data may reflect a registered or investment-related affiliation and may not be updated at the same time as a company biography. “Head of Cybersecurity” is also not automatically equivalent to “chief information security officer.” The FINRA record therefore should be treated as a regulatory cross-check, not conclusive proof that Ely remains Fidelity’s CISO. The report is available at FINRA BrokerCheck.
How to read the 2021 announcement today
- Confirmed: Ely joined Fidelity as CISO in May 2021 after Walmart’s deputy-CISO role.
- Supported by biographies: He later moved into Fidelity’s digital-products and engineering organization.
- Current public identification: Check Point lists him as a General Manager in AI security in 2026.
- Not established: A precise Fidelity departure date, the reason for any role change, or a specific security program personally introduced by Ely.
- Historical only: Employee, customer-account and assets-under-administration figures in the 2021 report should not be reused as 2026 metrics without fresh verification.
Bottom line
Adam Ely’s appointment was a genuine and notable Fidelity executive move announced on May 17, 2021. His Walmart, startup, application-security and enterprise-operations experience fit the demands of a large financial-services CISO role. The later public record matters just as much: Ely is described as having moved into Fidelity’s digital leadership and is identified by Check Point in 2026 as an AI-security general manager. Because corporate biographies and FINRA records are not synchronized, the evidence does not support calling him Fidelity’s current CISO without qualification.
