Acura RDX Production Ends After 2026: Why the Popular Crossover Is Going Away—and What Comes Next

Acura is ending production of the current gas-powered RDX after 2026, but the nameplate will return as a hybrid. Here is what shoppers and owners need to know.

Acura is ending production of the current, third-generation RDX after the 2026 model year—but it is not permanently killing the RDX nameplate. Acura said on January 14, 2026, that production of the 2026 RDX would be suspended later in the year because several suppliers could no longer provide key parts. The company also confirmed that a fourth-generation RDX is in development with Acura’s first two-motor hybrid-electric system. Acura expects the hybrid successor within the next couple of years, but has not announced a firm U.S. launch date or model year.

That creates three different stories that are often being confused: the gas-powered RDX generation is ending; there may be a temporary gap in new RDX availability; and the RDX name itself is continuing. Remaining 2026 vehicles may still be sold by dealers after factory production stops, while current owners should continue to receive normal warranty, recall and service support.

The short answer: the current RDX is ending, not the RDX nameplate

For U.S. shoppers, the most accurate description is: 2026 is the final model year for the current RDX generation, and there may be no new RDX for the 2027 model year. Acura has confirmed a fourth-generation hybrid RDX, so headlines saying that Acura is abandoning or permanently canceling the RDX go too far.

Acura has not publicly announced the exact final production day. Unofficial reports place the last third-generation build around May 5, 2026, but that date has not been confirmed by Honda or Acura. The safest wording is that Acura announced a production suspension later in 2026, with the current generation ending after the 2026 model year. Dealer inventory and industry reporting indicate that new-vehicle sales could continue for a while after assembly ends.

Coverlex All-Weather Car Cover Custom Fit for Acura RDX 2007-2026
  • 【Custom Fit for Maximum Protection】 Designed specifically for Acura RDX models from 2007 to 2026, this Coverlex 6-Layer Heavy Duty Car Cover delivers a precise, contour-hugging fit for enhanced coverage. Compatible with Base, Technology Package, Advance Package, A-Spec, and PMC Edition trims—including FWD and SH-AWD versions with similar body dimensions—it provides more dependable protection than universal covers, helping shield your vehicle from rain, dust, UV rays, and scratches all year round.
  • 【Advanced 6-Layer System for Complete Vehicle Protection】 Engineered with a robust six-layer structure, the Coverlex car cover is built to deliver dependable, full-coverage defense. It features a durable PEVA exterior, a waterproof barrier, a reflective silver layer for sun protection, and a soft, thick cotton lining that is gentle on paint. Additional protective layers enhance strength and durability, helping guard your vehicle against rain, snow, UV exposure, dust, and surface scratches without compromising your car’s finish.
  • 【Reliable Protection in Every Season】 Designed for year-round use, this Outdoor car cover defends your vehicle from harsh weather conditions including heavy rain, snow, ice, and hail. It also helps reduce damage from strong sunlight and harmful UV rays. Beyond weather protection, it shields against falling branches, airborne dust, bird droppings, and minor scratches caused by pets or accidental contact, keeping your car clean and well-protected in any environment.
  • 【Practical Features for Secure Fit & Enhanced Safety】 For easy installation and a secure hold, the cover is designed with elasticized hems at both the front and rear. Four adjustable windproof straps attach firmly to the wheel rims, helping prevent the cover from shifting or blowing off in windy conditions. Bright orange reflective strips placed on the mirror pockets and at the front and rear light areas improve nighttime visibility. A free storage bag is also included for convenient packing and transport.
  • 【Important Usage Tips】 To help protect your vehicle’s paint, ensure the car surface is clean and free from large debris before installing the cover. Avoid placing the cover on a wet vehicle to reduce the risk of paint damage. When installing, locate the logo and the “FRONT” label positioned at the bottom center to correctly identify the front and rear sides.

This distinction matters financially. A vehicle can stop being built without disappearing from dealer lots, and a discontinued generation does not automatically become a bargain, a collectible or a bad ownership proposition.

What Acura officially announced

Acura’s January 14 announcement established four important facts:

  • Production of the 2026 RDX will be suspended later in 2026.
  • Several suppliers are no longer able to continue providing key parts for the current vehicle.
  • A fourth-generation RDX is in development.
  • The replacement will use Acura’s first two-motor hybrid-electric system and is expected within “the next couple of years.”

Acura did not publish a list of the affected parts, a precise final build date, a replacement model year or detailed hybrid specifications. That means reports describing a specific launch month, a “2028 RDX,” a particular engine, a precise fuel-economy rating or a confirmed drivetrain layout should be treated as estimates rather than official product information.

The official 2026 RDX specifications page continues to list the current model, but an online model page is not proof that a particular dealer still has one in stock. Availability will vary by region, trim, color and dealer allocation. Conditions may also differ in Canada and other markets; the information here is primarily about the United States and North America.

Why is Acura ending RDX production?

1. Suppliers can no longer support key parts

The only direct reason Acura itself has given is supplier continuity. According to Acura, several suppliers could no longer provide key parts for the current RDX. For a vehicle nearing the end of its generation, continuing production could require replacing suppliers, redesigning components or revalidating systems for a relatively short remaining production run.

That is different from saying there is a broad semiconductor shortage or an industry-wide parts crisis. Acura has not disclosed which parts are affected, and its announcement does not establish that routine repair parts for existing RDX vehicles are about to disappear.

2. Honda changed its near-term electrification strategy

The supplier issue explains the immediate production decision, but it does not fully explain why Acura is allowing a gap before the replacement arrives. The broader context is Honda’s shift from an EV-heavy North American strategy toward hybrids.

On March 12, 2026, Honda canceled development and launch plans for the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX EV. Honda cited changing market conditions, difficulty achieving profitability, tariffs and weaker North American EV economics, and said it would strengthen its hybrid lineup instead. Honda’s official announcement provides the company’s explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dealer and industry reports have connected the RDX delay to this change in direction. The likely interpretation is that Acura’s next product plan was affected by the company’s earlier EV focus and the subsequent decision to prioritize hybrids. That is useful business context, but it is an inference—not Acura’s stated single cause for ending current RDX production.

3. Honda is reallocating plant and development resources

Honda’s May 2026 business update said the company would redirect excess Ohio auto-plant capacity toward internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles after reassessing its EV plans. Honda also said its North American auto plants would become capable of producing hybrid models.

The East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio builds the Honda CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Acura MDX and, until the production halt, the Acura RDX. Honda has been retooling the facility as part of its Ohio EV hub, although the cancellation of several EV programs changed the near-term manufacturing plan.

In practical terms, Acura is transitioning away from a current gas-powered RDX that has reached a parts and product-cycle dead end while the hybrid successor is still being developed. That produces an awkward gap even though the RDX remains an important product.

Was the RDX actually popular?

Yes—historically and within Acura’s lineup. But “popular” should not be confused with “Acura’s current best-selling vehicle in every year.” The RDX was a significant volume model, not necessarily the brand’s sales leader when production was suspended.

Acura says the RDX has generated approximately 850,000 cumulative North American sales over three generations. In the United States, sales peaked at 63,580 units in 2018, around the launch of the current generation. Acura sold 42,988 RDXs in 2024, compared with 50,112 MDXs. Honda’s North American fact book supplies the 2024 comparison, while Acura has documented the RDX’s historical sales record in its product coverage.

The RDX was still moving meaningful volume immediately before the production decision. Acura reported 2,487 RDX sales in March 2026, versus 4,272 MDX sales that month. Acura’s March sales release shows that the model had not simply become unsellable.

The evidence supports this conclusion:

The RDX is ending because the current vehicle reached a parts and product-cycle dead end—not because Acura suddenly discovered that nobody wanted it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It would be inaccurate to say that falling sales alone forced Acura to cancel the RDX. The available evidence points to supplier limitations combined with a delayed and reworked replacement strategy.

What happened to the Acura RSX?

The Acura RSX EV is an important part of the updated story. Early 2026 reports often presented the electric RSX as a forthcoming Acura SUV that might help carry the brand while the RDX was absent. That information became obsolete on March 12, when Honda canceled the RSX EV before it launched.

The RSX:

  • Was not launched as a production vehicle.
  • Is not the replacement for the RDX.
  • Cannot serve as Acura’s bridge product during the RDX gap.
  • Should not be described as an upcoming Acura model in current buying advice.

Acura’s near-term SUV strategy now depends more heavily on the ADX, MDX and remaining RDX inventory while the future hybrid SUV is developed. Acura’s June 2026 sales release discussed growth from the ADX, Integra and MDX rather than treating the canceled RSX as an upcoming contributor. See Acura’s June and first-half sales update.

What is known about the next RDX?

Confirmed information

  • It will be the fourth-generation RDX.
  • It will use a two-motor hybrid-electric system.
  • It will be Acura’s first vehicle with that two-motor hybrid system.
  • Acura expects it within the next couple of years.
  • Honda showed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype in May 2026 as part of its revised hybrid strategy.

Honda’s May 14 business update said next-generation hybrid models would begin launching from 2027 and that the Acura hybrid SUV prototype was scheduled for launch within two years. However, Honda did not formally identify that prototype as the RDX.

What remains unknown

  • The exact launch date and official model year.
  • Whether the prototype will carry the RDX name.
  • Horsepower, torque, battery size and fuel-economy ratings.
  • Towing capacity.
  • Whether the system will use front-wheel drive, electric all-wheel drive or a combination of engine-driven and electric axles.
  • Whether Acura will retain the SH-AWD name.
  • Pricing, trims and available options.
  • Whether Acura will offer a non-hybrid gasoline version alongside the hybrid.

The prototype likely previews the next RDX because Acura had already confirmed a fourth-generation hybrid RDX and then showed a compact-to-midsize Acura hybrid SUV shortly afterward. That is a strong inference, not a formal naming announcement. Until Acura attaches the RDX name to the production vehicle, descriptions such as “the likely next RDX” are more accurate than treating the prototype’s identity as settled.

Likewise, claims that the replacement will be a 2028 model, begin production in April 2028 or use a specific V6 should be labeled industry estimates. Acura has not confirmed those details publicly.

What happens to remaining 2026 RDX inventory?

Factory production and dealer sales are separate events. Acura expected enough inventory for sales to continue through much of 2026, and some dealers may have unsold vehicles after the production line stops. A remaining vehicle could be listed as dealer stock, an incoming allocation or a dealer-trade opportunity.

Availability depends on:

  • Your region and local Acura dealer allocation.
  • Trim, exterior color and interior configuration.
  • Whether the vehicle has already been titled or remains new.
  • Dealer pricing and incentives.
  • How quickly the remaining national inventory is absorbed.

The end of production can create negotiating leverage because dealers may prefer to clear aging inventory. It does not guarantee a discount. A scarce, desirable trim can sometimes command a premium even as the broader model is being phased out. Compare multiple local listings and ask for the full out-the-door price rather than assuming the dealer’s advertised payment is the final cost.

What the 2026 RDX offers

The 2026 RDX remains a conventional gas-powered compact luxury crossover. According to Acura’s 2026 pricing and specifications, it uses:

  • A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
  • 272 horsepower.
  • 280 lb-ft of torque.
  • A 10-speed automatic transmission.
  • SH-AWD on the listed 2026 trims.
  • Five-passenger seating.
  • A starting MSRP of $45,100 before applicable destination charges, taxes, registration and dealer fees.

Because the next model’s final specifications are unknown, the current RDX has one practical advantage: buyers know what they are purchasing. Its powertrain, equipment, warranty structure and service requirements are documented, while the hybrid successor’s price and efficiency have not yet been announced.

Should you buy a remaining 2026 RDX?

There is no automatic reason to avoid the final 2026 RDX. The better decision depends on whether you value a known vehicle now or would rather wait for the redesign and hybrid system.

Buyer priority More sensible direction Why
Needs a new Acura crossover now Consider a remaining 2026 RDX You avoid waiting through an uncertain replacement gap.
Prefers a turbocharged gasoline engine and conventional automatic transmission 2026 RDX The hybrid successor may drive and be configured differently.
Wants the newest design and likely improved efficiency Wait for the hybrid The next generation should bring new hardware, styling and electrification.
Wants the lowest possible purchase price within Acura’s SUV lineup Compare the ADX It is smaller and positioned below the RDX, so it is not a direct replacement.
Needs three rows or more cargo and passenger capacity Compare the MDX It is larger and more expensive, but better suited to bigger families.
Wants an Acura specifically but does not need a vehicle immediately Wait and monitor Acura announcements The launch timing and specifications are still unconfirmed.

Reasons to buy now

  • You need a vehicle before the replacement arrives. Waiting could mean relying on a used vehicle, paying for a different crossover or accepting an uncertain delivery timeline.
  • You prefer known technology. The current turbocharged engine and 10-speed automatic are established products, while the two-motor hybrid will be new to Acura.
  • You find a fair end-of-generation deal. A dealer may be motivated to move an aging unit, although the discount must be judged against the total price, financing rate and trade-in value.
  • You prefer the current driving formula. Buyers who specifically want a turbocharged gasoline RDX with SH-AWD should not assume the next model will preserve every feature.

Reasons to wait

  • You want the redesign. The fourth-generation vehicle should bring new styling and a new hybrid powertrain.
  • Fuel economy is a priority. A hybrid may improve efficiency, but Acura has not announced an RDX-specific EPA rating, so do not buy based on an invented MPG estimate.
  • You dislike buying at the end of a generation. A new model can make the outgoing vehicle feel older immediately, even if the outgoing vehicle is mechanically sound.
  • Your current vehicle can comfortably last through the gap. Waiting makes more sense if you can avoid expensive interim financing or a rushed purchase.

Financial checklist before buying a final-year RDX

  1. Confirm the model year. Verify that the vehicle is a 2026, not a leftover 2025 advertised with similar photos or language.
  2. Check the VIN and build date. Review the vehicle history, window sticker and inspection record. A late-build vehicle is not automatically better, but the details help establish exactly what you are buying.
  3. Get competing out-the-door quotes. Compare selling price, destination charge, dealer documentation fee, accessories, taxes, registration and any mandatory products.
  4. Separate the discount from the financing offer. A low promotional APR and a large cash rebate are not always combinable. Ask the dealer to show the cash price, APR, loan term and total payments separately.
  5. Do not pay a scarcity premium. The end of production does not make an ordinary 2026 RDX a guaranteed collectible. Pay for the vehicle’s condition and equipment, not the headline.
  6. Check warranty and maintenance paperwork. Confirm the applicable new-vehicle warranty, included maintenance, open recalls and any dealer-installed equipment in writing.
  7. Consider your ownership horizon. If you plan to keep the RDX for many years, the generation change may matter less than purchase price and condition. If you plan to sell or trade soon, compare the likely depreciation of an outgoing model with the cost of waiting.
  8. Evaluate a lease differently. A lease can reduce exposure to long-term resale uncertainty, but the payment depends on the residual value, money factor, incentives and mileage allowance. Review the residual and total lease cost rather than focusing only on the monthly payment.
  9. Ask about the gap before signing. If you are leasing, consider whether the lease ends before the hybrid replacement is realistically available. Do not assume Acura will have a replacement ready when your lease expires.

What current RDX owners and lessees need to know

Ending production does not mean current RDX owners suddenly lose warranty coverage, recall support or access to ordinary service. Acura has not announced that routine service or warranty support will end. The supplier issue concerns continued production of the current vehicle; it should not automatically be generalized into a parts crisis for vehicles already on the road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Owners should nevertheless distinguish among:

  • Routine maintenance parts and consumables.
  • Warranty and recall repairs.
  • Model-specific electronic, body or trim components.
  • Long-term parts availability after the generation ages.

For a current owner, the practical steps are straightforward: keep maintenance records, complete open recalls, use the VIN when ordering parts and confirm coverage with an Acura dealer or Acura customer service before assuming a part is unavailable.

MotorTrend reported that Acura was allowing some current owners to extend leases. Lease-extension eligibility, pricing and timing can vary, so confirm the offer directly with Acura Financial Services or the servicing dealer. An extension is not automatically the best financial choice: compare the extension payment, mileage limits, wear charges and the cost of waiting against buying or leasing another vehicle.

Best alternatives while the RDX is unavailable

No single alternative is a perfect substitute. Choose based on the feature that matters most rather than assuming every premium SUV in this size range is interchangeable.

Acura ADX: smaller and more affordable

The ADX is Acura’s smaller premium compact SUV positioned below the RDX. It is the most obvious same-brand option for someone who wants a new Acura crossover immediately and can accept less size, cabin space and performance. It is not a one-for-one RDX replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Acura MDX: larger and family-oriented

The MDX is Acura’s larger three-row SUV and flagship SUV. It makes more sense for buyers who need additional passenger and cargo capacity, but it is physically larger and generally more expensive than the RDX. A shopper who specifically wants a compact two-row crossover may find the MDX excessive.

Honda CR-V Hybrid: practical efficiency

The CR-V Hybrid is a logical size-and-efficiency alternative for buyers who value space and hybrid fuel economy more than luxury equipment, performance or Acura branding. The CR-V and RDX are built at the same East Liberty plant, but they are not identical vehicles or direct mechanical substitutes.

Other compact luxury crossovers

Shoppers can also compare the Lexus NX, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Genesis GV70. These vehicles differ substantially in pricing, standard equipment, powertrain choices, warranty terms, cargo space, fuel economy and lease support. For a fair comparison, obtain current manufacturer pricing and EPA ratings at the time of purchase rather than relying on older RDX comparisons.

How the RDX production gap affects price and resale value

The end of production creates both potential advantages and risks for buyers.

Potential advantages

  • Dealers may discount remaining inventory to free showroom and floor-plan space.
  • Manufacturing problems associated with the current generation may be less relevant once the model is no longer being built, although buyers should still review recalls and service history.
  • A buyer can negotiate from a known invoice and market price instead of paying for an untested redesign.

Potential risks

  • An outgoing model can depreciate faster when a visibly new generation reaches showrooms.
  • Popular trims may become scarce, reducing negotiating power rather than increasing it.
  • The absence of a 2027 RDX could make replacement timing inconvenient for buyers who want to trade soon.
  • Future hybrid demand and incentives are unknown, so waiting does not guarantee a lower total cost.

There is no reliable basis for assuming that a final-year RDX will appreciate simply because production ended. Most buyers should treat it as a depreciating vehicle and make the purchase based on price, financing, operating cost and intended ownership period.

Timeline: what changed and what is current

Date Development Why it matters
January 14, 2026 Acura announced that 2026 RDX production would be suspended later in the year and confirmed a fourth-generation two-motor hybrid RDX. This established that the current generation is ending but the nameplate is continuing.
March 12, 2026 Honda canceled the planned Acura RSX EV and two Honda 0-series EVs. The RSX is not available to bridge the RDX gap.
May 14, 2026 Honda showed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype and reaffirmed a broader hybrid rollout. The prototype likely previews the next RDX, but Honda did not formally give it the RDX name.
As of August 9, 2026 Acura had not announced a definitive final production day, replacement model year, U.S. launch date or production specifications. Specific 2028 dates and detailed powertrain claims remain estimates.

Bottom line for shoppers

Acura is not killing the RDX because buyers rejected it. It is ending the current gas-powered generation after supplier constraints collided with a delayed and reworked hybrid replacement. The result is an unusual temporary gap: a historically successful compact luxury crossover is leaving the lineup before its successor is ready.

If you need an Acura crossover now and find a sensibly priced, well-equipped 2026 RDX, buying one can be reasonable. If you want the newest design, hybrid efficiency and longer-term product freshness—and your current vehicle can last—waiting is the more logical choice. In either case, do not confuse the end of factory production with the immediate end of dealer availability, and do not treat an unconfirmed launch date as a promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Acura permanently discontinuing the RDX?

No. Acura is ending production of the current third-generation, gas-powered RDX after the 2026 model year, but it has confirmed that a fourth-generation RDX with a two-motor hybrid-electric system is in development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will there be a 2027 Acura RDX?

Acura has not confirmed a 2027 RDX. The company announced that current RDX production would be suspended later in 2026, so there may be no new RDX for the 2027 model year.

Why is Acura ending RDX production?

Acura’s official explanation is that several suppliers could no longer provide key parts for the current RDX. Honda’s broader shift away from several planned EVs and toward hybrids likely contributed to the timing of the replacement, but that strategic explanation is context and inference rather than Acura’s stated sole cause.

Is the Acura RSX replacing the RDX?

No. Honda canceled the planned Acura RSX EV on March 12, 2026, before it launched. The RSX is not available to fill the RDX gap.

Can I still buy a new 2026 Acura RDX?

Possibly. Factory production ending does not immediately eliminate dealer inventory. Remaining availability will depend on location, trim, color and dealer allocation. Verify the VIN, model year and out-the-door price with individual dealers.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Will current RDX owners still get service and warranty support?

Ending production does not by itself cancel warranty, recall or routine service support. Acura has not announced that owner support will end. Owners should confirm specific repairs, parts and lease terms directly with Acura or an authorized dealer.

The Bottom Line

The current Acura RDX is ending after 2026, but the RDX nameplate is not. Acura cites supplier limitations, while Honda’s EV-to-hybrid strategy shift helps explain the replacement gap. A remaining 2026 RDX can be a sensible purchase at the right price; waiting makes more sense for shoppers who can defer a purchase and prefer the forthcoming hybrid redesign.
