Acun Ilicali says his wealth exceeds $1 billion when the value of his companies is included. That is his own estimate, given in a July 2026 interview—not an independently audited valuation, and not a claim that he has $1 billion in cash. The Turkish media entrepreneur bought Hull City in January 2022. After the club’s promotion to the Premier League in May 2026, he described staying in the top flight as the immediate priority, with European competition a longer-term ambition.

What is Acun Ilicali’s net worth?

The clearest public figure comes from Ilicali himself. In an interview published by InBusiness on 13 July 2026, he addressed competing rumours that his wealth was either $100 million or $1 billion. He said the $1 billion figure was correct, then said that including the value of his companies put his fortune above $1 billion. He described wealth as including real estate, money in the bank, investments and company values—not just cash.

This should be treated as a self-reported estimate, not an established personal net worth. The interview does not provide an audited personal balance sheet, a transparent valuation method or an independent estimate confirming the figure. It also does not show how much of the stated wealth is liquid or readily available to spend.

Figure What it refers to Qualification
Above $1 billion Ilicali’s stated personal fortune when company values are included His estimate in the 13 July 2026 InBusiness interview; not independently audited
£20 million Reported price for Ilicali’s purchase of Hull City The Guardian reported this for the January 2022 takeover; it is a club purchase price, not a valuation of Ilicali’s wealth
More than £100 million Amount Ilicali said he had spent in the context of Hull’s squad Quoted by The Guardian in its 22 May 2026 interview; a statement by Ilicali, not a verified accounting total
£41.7 million Hull City’s reported underlying losses BBC reporting in August 2026 on recently published club figures; this is a club figure, not Ilicali’s personal debt or loss

What businesses does Ilicali have?

From sports reporting to Acun Medya

According to the BBC’s 20 August 2026 profile, Ilicali began as a sports reporter for Turkish broadcaster Show TV, then built a public following with the travel programme Acun Firarda (“Acun on the Run”). He founded Acun Medya in 2004. The BBC says the company acquired rights to television formats including MasterChef and Deal or No Deal, and launched Turkey’s Got Talent.

The BBC profile describes Ilicali’s rise as a television producer after an early financial setback: he experienced bankruptcy in his twenties after losing money in a business venture. It also notes that football was a longstanding interest, preceding his move into club ownership.

Other ventures he described

In the July 2026 InBusiness interview, Ilicali described TV8 as a channel he owns outright and said it was profitable. He said EXXEN, his streaming service, had passed one million subscribers during the period it showed Champions League matches, but had around 400,000 subscribers at the time of the interview. These are his claims in that interview, not independently verified subscriber disclosures.

He also discussed Acun Global’s international work and potential expansion, a German channel he called Sport1, production of Yooyu slippers at a factory, Kappa distribution in Turkey and a 230-room hotel in the Dominican Republic. These details describe the portfolio he presented in the interview; they should not be read as independently audited statements about company ownership, performance or valuation.

Who owns Hull City, and what has happened under Ilicali?

Ilicali completed his takeover of Hull City from the Allam family in January 2022. The Guardian reported the purchase price as £20 million. Hull, commonly called the Tigers, had a mixed run in the seasons that followed: The Guardian’s 22 May 2026 interview recounts a 19th-place finish after his first managerial change, then 15th in his first full season and seventh the following season under Liam Rosenior, three points short of the play-offs. Hull narrowly avoided relegation in 2024–25, surviving on goal difference.

In May 2026, Hull won the play-off final and secured promotion to the Premier League, returning to the top flight for the first time in a decade, according to the BBC’s August profile. Ilicali called the promotion his biggest business achievement, telling the BBC: “It’s number one. If you’d given me eight years, I’d say we can do it. In four and a half years, to get promotion, I can say it’s my biggest achievement in business.”

What are Ilicali’s plans for Hull City?

Survival first, Europe later

In the July 2026 InBusiness interview, Ilicali said Hull’s immediate objective was avoiding relegation. His translated words were: “My first goal, of course, is for the team not to be relegated from the Premier League.” He also described reaching the Europa League and then the Champions League as longer-term ambitions. Those are stated goals, not forecasts or guarantees.

  • Football season welcome, Pirates pride, worth having.
  • Football gear for new Hull, MA families, handy from day one, and Hull earns on every order.

The Guardian’s 22 May 2026 interview captured the scale of the challenge before promotion was secured. Asked about Hull’s first Premier League season, Ilicali said: “So, are we in danger? We are in big danger.” That acknowledgment sits alongside his longer-term European aspirations, rather than evidence that either outcome is assured.

Recruitment and the club’s financial context

A local report dated 5 June 2026, summarising a supporter question-and-answer session, said Ilicali expected around 10 transfer moves. He reportedly included players who might be signed and loaned out, and emphasised high-potential talent and increasing squad value rather than signing Robert Lewandowski for publicity. This was a dated expectation, not confirmation that those moves were completed.

Before the play-off final, The Guardian reported Ilicali’s statement that he had spent more than £100 million in the context of Hull’s squad, and described a shift toward longer-term recruitment and less reliance on loan players. The figure is his claim, not a verified accounting total. In August 2026, the BBC reported Hull’s underlying losses of £41.7 million in recently published accounts and new profit-and-sustainability challenges following promotion. The club’s finances and its ability to build a squad are distinct from Ilicali’s personal wealth claim.

Managerial changes and involvement

Ilicali has said he wants results and entertaining football. In a 2025 BBC Sport interview, he acknowledged that Hull had changed too many coaches while arguing that changing a manager is not necessarily fatal to a club. The Guardian’s 2026 interview quoted him explaining: “People thought I was changing the coaches because of my ego, but I was changing my coaches because of my lack of ego.” The club’s managerial turnover and results are relevant context for judging that explanation.

He also described a hands-on but supportive approach: “I’m an owner who is involved in the team. But involved means not at the disturbance level. I just want to comfort the staff.” His stated wish to support staff and pursue stability should be considered alongside the coaching changes, rather than treated as proof that the club has already achieved either.

What the public record does—and does not—establish

  • Ownership: Ilicali completed the Hull City takeover in January 2022; The Guardian reported a £20 million purchase price.
  • Personal wealth: the above-$1-billion estimate is Ilicali’s own statement from July 2026, including company values. The cited reporting does not independently verify it.
  • Business interests: BBC reporting documents his media career and Acun Medya; additional ventures and operating details were described by Ilicali in an interview.
  • Football plans: Premier League survival is his stated immediate objective after promotion, while European qualification is an ambition for later.
  • Financial constraints: the BBC’s reported Hull losses and profit-and-sustainability scrutiny concern the club, not Ilicali’s personal balance sheet.
