It is commonly used for paychecks, bill payments, and scheduled transfers. ACH is useful for routine payments, but settlement on the network does not guarantee that funds will be available in your account immediately; timing, fees, and limits depend in part on your financial institution.
What is an ACH transaction?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) defines it this way: “An ACH transaction is an electronic money transfer made between banks and credit unions across a network called the Automated Clearing House (ACH).” (CFPB; last reviewed August 28, 2026.) ACH is a payment network, not a bank account or a consumer app. The Federal Reserve describes it as a national batch network used to process electronic credits and debits (Federal Reserve).

Common examples include an employer sending payroll by direct deposit, a utility collecting a scheduled bill payment, and a consumer paying a bill online. An ACH payment can also move money between accounts. (CFPB)
How an ACH transfer moves money
A typical payment passes through several organizations. The business or person initiating it is the originator. The originator sends payment instructions through its bank, called the originating depository financial institution (ODFI). An ACH operator sorts and routes the instructions to the receiving bank or credit union, called the receiving depository financial institution (RDFI), which posts the transaction to the receiver’s account. The Federal Reserve and The Clearing House are the network’s two ACH operators; Nacha sets the network rules but does not itself process payments. (Nacha)

ACH credit: money is pushed into your account
In an ACH credit, the originator instructs its financial institution to send money to the receiver. Payroll direct deposit and many government payments are examples. From the account holder’s point of view, the money comes in.
ACH debit: money is pulled from your account
In an ACH debit, a payee submits a request to collect a payment from the payer’s account, typically based on an authorization or payment instructions. A recurring utility bill withdrawal is one example. From the account holder’s point of view, the money goes out. (Nacha)
Why use ACH?
ACH is well suited to payments that are scheduled or recurring and involve known counterparties. It can reduce the need to write and mail checks or remember to initiate each regular payment manually. Consumers commonly encounter it for:
- Receiving pay or government payments by direct deposit.
- Paying recurring bills, such as utilities.
- Making one-time online bill payments.
- Transferring money between accounts.
Those conveniences are most helpful when you know the due date and can allow for processing time. ACH is not a promise of an instant transfer.

How long does an ACH transfer take?
ACH payments are processed in batches on banking days. Some can settle on the same business day they are entered, but settlement and the moment funds are usable in a consumer’s account are not the same thing. A bank or credit union may take additional time to post funds or complete fraud and money-laundering safeguards. The CFPB says processing can take days in some cases (CFPB).
Nacha estimates that 80% of ACH payments settle in one banking day or less (Nacha). That is a network-wide estimate, not a deadline or funds-availability guarantee for a particular payment. Ask your bank or credit union about its cutoff times and when it expects the money to be available.
What Same Day ACH means
Same Day ACH allows eligible payments to settle within hours, subject to network rules and processing windows. Nacha’s 2026 fact sheet states that the network limit is $1 million per payment, raised from $100,000 in March 2022. That is a network limit, not a promise that every financial institution will offer same-day processing or make funds available immediately. In 2025, the network processed 1.4 billion Same Day ACH payments valued at $3.9 trillion, up 16.7% by count and 21.4% by value from the prior year, according to Nacha (Nacha).
Fees, limits, and returned payments
Fees and transfer limits vary by financial institution and account. Before setting up a payment or transfer, check your institution’s current terms for:

An ACH debit may be returned if the account does not have enough money to cover it. A returned payment can disrupt a bill payment or transfer, so keep the expected withdrawal amount available and check the account’s terms for any associated fees. (CFPB)
How ACH compares with other ways to pay
The right payment method depends on urgency, direction, cost, and what happens if something goes wrong. The sources cited here establish ACH’s uses and limitations, but do not establish directly comparable fees or delivery times for wires, card payments, or instant-payment systems. Check the relevant providers’ terms rather than assuming those alternatives are always faster or more expensive.
| Decision point | What to consider with ACH |
|---|---|
| Timing | Batch processing runs on banking days; settlement timing does not guarantee immediate availability. |
| Payment direction | A credit pushes money into an account; a debit pulls money out under payment instructions or authorization. |
| Fees and limits | Your bank or credit union sets the applicable account terms; check them before sending or scheduling a payment. |
| Best fit | Often practical for known, scheduled payments such as paychecks, recurring bills, and planned transfers; less appropriate when you need a guaranteed immediate arrival. |
| If there is a problem | Contact the financial institution and the organization that initiated the payment; they can investigate the individual transaction. |
What to do if an ACH payment is missing or unfamiliar
If a deposit does not arrive, you see an unexpected debit, or a payment is returned, contact both your bank or credit union and the organization that initiated the transaction. Those parties are generally best placed to locate or investigate an individual payment. Nacha does not have access to individual payment records. (Nacha)
If you see a debit you do not recognize, ask your financial institution to identify the originator and explain the steps available for your account. Keep the date, amount, and any payment or reference details handy when you call.

Understand recurring-debit authorization
For any recurring debit, read the authorization so you understand what can be withdrawn and how to stop or revoke it. The CFPB’s specific guidance on payday loans says a lender cannot condition a payday loan on obtaining authorization for recurring electronic fund transfers and recommends checking that the authorization clearly explains how to stop or revoke it. That guidance concerns payday-loan authorizations; it should not be read as a rule for every ACH authorization. (CFPB)
Finding the information needed for direct deposit or another ACH payment
Payment forms commonly ask for your bank’s routing number and your account number. Use the details provided by your bank or credit union and follow the form’s instructions carefully; do not assume a number on a payment card is the account number requested. If you are unsure which account details to provide, ask your financial institution before submitting the form.
How large is the ACH network?
Nacha’s 2026 fact sheet reports that the ACH Network processed 35.2 billion payments valued at $93 trillion in 2025. It also reports 8.1 billion business-to-business ACH payments that year, a 9.9% increase from 2024, and 17.17 billion consumer-initiated bill payments and other transfers via ACH (Nacha). These network-wide totals describe usage, not the speed, availability, or cost of any individual consumer transfer.
