The Redwood City, California-based company said it would bring prefabricated detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs) to the Seattle area. GeekWire reported that Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman was among Abodu’s investors; Redfin was not identified as the builder or operator. The available sources do not establish whether Abodu currently sells in Seattle or whether its Seattle showroom remains open.
What Abodu announced in Seattle in 2022
Abodu sold detached accessory dwelling units: separate homes built on the same property as an existing home, commonly called backyard cottages or DADUs in Seattle. GeekWire reported that the company was expanding beyond California and had delivered more than 100 homes in 35 California cities by the time of the story. Those delivery figures describe Abodu’s reported position in 2022, not its current footprint.
The Seattle launch story described three designs: a 340-square-foot studio, a 500-square-foot one-bedroom, and a 610-square-foot two-bedroom home. Separately, Abodu’s pre-approval submission hosted by Seattle’s Office of Planning & Community Development showed a 335-square-foot studio and a 495-square-foot one-bedroom Abodu One. These are figures from different launch-era documents; the sources do not explain the differences.
What the 2022 price and construction schedule included
GeekWire reported a launch-era starting price of $228,900, before taxes, fees, and site-specific work. It also reported four to six weeks of onsite construction. Both are 2022 figures, not current quotations or guaranteed timelines. The story does not establish a total installed cost, which can depend on the property and the work needed to prepare it.

For a household assessing a DADU’s affordability, the starting price alone is not enough to compare options. Ask for a site-specific written estimate that separates the unit from permitting, foundation and site preparation, utility connections, taxes, fees, delivery, and any other work. Confirm what the quoted schedule covers, what must be completed first, and who is responsible for service and warranty obligations.
What Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman’s connection was
GeekWire reported that Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman was among Abodu’s investors and that Abodu had raised $25 million in equity funding by that point. That is an investment connection, not evidence that Redfin owned Abodu, built the homes, or operated the Seattle business. The $25 million figure is the amount reported as raised by the time of the 2022 article, not a current funding total.

How Seattle permitting fits into the decision
GeekWire’s 2022 account said Seattle had allowed DADUs in single-family zones since 2010 and that a local law adopted in July 2019 was intended to reduce regulatory barriers. The same story noted that local approval and permitting were necessary. These are historical descriptions, not a guide to current Seattle rules: requirements can change, so verify current zoning, design, permitting, and site requirements with the City of Seattle before relying on them or committing money.
Abodu’s Seattle-submitted proposal described features including FSC-certified timber, a heat-pump water heater, a high-efficiency mini-split HVAC system, and insulation specifications. Those details are company claims in its submission, not independent findings about energy performance or operating costs.

What Abodu’s current company information establishes
Abodu’s company pages reviewed on October 7, 2026, describe a California-focused ADU business and list current models that differ from the Seattle designs reported in 2022. Its About page identifies Bobby Shokri as CEO and says he acquired the company in 2025. The company’s showroom article mentions Seattle, but that mention alone does not establish that a showroom is operating or that Seattle customers can currently buy an Abodu home. Contact Abodu directly to confirm current service area, availability, and any showroom status.

- Total installed cost: Separate the home price from site preparation, utilities, permitting, taxes, fees, and other exclusions.
- Schedule: Clarify the delivery and onsite phases, prerequisites, and which delays or tasks fall to the homeowner.
- Specifications and service: Review construction and energy-system details, warranty terms, and who handles service after installation.
The 2022 coverage does not provide comparable competitor quotes, so it cannot establish that Abodu was cheaper or faster than other options.
