Recovering abandoned carts takes two kinds of work: remove the checkout friction that makes shoppers leave, then follow up with people your store can identify and contact appropriately. A reminder can bring someone back to a saved checkout, but it cannot erase an unexpected delivery charge or fix a confusing payment step.
Baymard Institute’s checkout-usability page reports a 70.19% average cart-abandonment rate, accessed in 2026. Shopify’s 2026 article gives 70.22%, also attributed to Baymard; the figures differ slightly across those pages, so treat them as broad context rather than a forecast for your store. What counts as an abandoned cart?
“Abandoned cart” can mean any cart a shopper leaves, but a store can only send a recovery message if it has a usable contact method and is permitted to use it. Shopify’s help documentation describes its abandoned-checkout record as a checkout left incomplete after the customer enters an email address; it is considered abandoned after more than ten minutes. That is Shopify’s definition for its documented feature, not a universal rule for every ecommerce platform. Shopify Help Center
The practical distinction matters: checkout improvements can benefit all shoppers, while email or SMS recovery reaches only eligible, identifiable shoppers. Shopify’s native automation also has channel eligibility limits, so do not assume every cart, sales channel, or customer enters the same workflow.

Ten strategies for abandoned cart recovery
1. Show the full cost before the final checkout step
Make shipping charges, taxes, and other unavoidable costs visible as early as you reasonably can. Shopify reports that Baymard attributed 40% of abandonment to extra costs at checkout. Shopify also reports 20% for slow delivery estimates, 19% for distrust in submitting payment information, 18% for forced account creation, and 17% for a checkout that is too long or complicated. These are figures Shopify attributes to Baymard; the original survey question wording and field dates were not verified, so they are best read as reported barriers, not precise forecasts of why your customers leave. Shopify’s reported figures
Use clear shipping and tax estimates, disclose thresholds for free shipping, and avoid introducing fees only after a shopper has invested time in the checkout. If the final total must vary by location, explain that early and show the estimate before payment.

2. Set delivery expectations before checkout feels finished
Display a realistic delivery window near the product, cart, or shipping selection—not only after the customer has entered payment information. Explain when processing time differs from transit time and be clear about pickup, back-order, or made-to-order timing. If delivery takes longer than some competitors, an accurate promise is more useful than a vague fast-shipping claim.
3. Shorten checkout and make guest checkout easy to find
Remove fields that are not needed to complete or fulfill an order, avoid forcing account creation, and make the guest path obvious where it is available. Let customers create an account after purchase if that suits the store. Review checkout on a phone as well as a desktop: unnecessary steps and unclear field requirements create friction even when the shopper already wants the product.

4. Make payment options and failure handling understandable
Show accepted payment methods before the shopper reaches the last step, and use a secure, familiar payment experience. Give actionable error messages when a card is declined, details are invalid, or a verification step fails; preserve the shopper’s entered information where safe and possible. Shopify’s abandoned-checkout guidance identifies payment errors, declined cards, invalid details, and failed 3-D Secure checks among issues that can interrupt checkout. Shopify checkout guidance
5. Make the recovery route return to the right checkout
A recovery email should provide a direct, working link to continue the shopper’s checkout, rather than sending them to a generic homepage or product listing. Shopify says eligible recovery emails contain a link to the customer’s abandoned cart so they can complete checkout. Confirm that the link works on mobile and that it does not lead to an expired session or an empty cart. Shopify recovery-link details

6. Send a useful first reminder, not an automatic discount
Identify the item or items left behind, provide the return-to-checkout link, and offer a simple way to get help with sizing, delivery, or payment. Keep the message recognizable as coming from the store. A discount may be appropriate when margin and customer behavior support it, but making every first reminder an offer can give shoppers a reason to wait for a coupon.
7. Use a sequence only when your data and platform support it
A single reminder may be enough for some stores; others may test a second message with different information or timing. There is no universally established best delay or sequence length in the cited guidance. Configurable flows can support multiple messages, timing controls, and branches such as different treatment by cart value. Klaviyo documents these options for abandoned-cart flows, including the need to ensure store events have synced before the first email can trigger. Feature availability is not proof that a third-party flow will outperform a native one. Klaviyo flow guide

8. Add SMS only with valid consent and appropriate timing
SMS can be useful for a shopper who has supplied a number and consented to the relevant marketing, but a phone number alone is not permission to send a recovery text. Klaviyo’s US instructions call for double opt-in, no more than one SMS per recipient, and sending within 48 hours; they also recommend observing quiet hours. Those are Klaviyo’s operational instructions for US recipients, not a complete statement of all legal requirements. Check the law and platform rules for the recipient’s jurisdiction and the consent the customer actually gave. Klaviyo SMS guidance
9. Stop messages after purchase and verify event syncing
Suppress a recovery flow as soon as the order is completed, so a customer does not receive a “finish your purchase” message after buying. Before launch, test the full event path: start checkout, abandon it, receive the eligible message, complete the order, and confirm that later recovery messages stop. For a configurable flow, check whether checkout and purchase events reach the email platform promptly; a delayed or missing event can send a message at the wrong time or fail to suppress it.
10. Measure recovered orders and test one change at a time
Track completed orders associated with recovery messages, not just opens or clicks. Compare timing, subject line, message content, and incentives against your own baseline, changing one meaningful variable at a time where traffic permits. Shopify offers an abandoned-checkout email report, while its guidance recommends refining timing using store email metrics. Click and order results depend on the audience, definitions, and measurement window; external figures should not be treated as promised outcomes for your store. Shopify abandoned-cart email guidance

Native automation is usually the simpler starting point if its eligible channels and reporting cover the checkouts you care about. A configurable flow may be useful when you need more control over message count, timing, branching, or email-and-SMS coordination. Compare the actual setup, not the assumption that one category is inherently more effective.

Quick Recap
How to tell whether recovery is working
- Check reach: Count eligible abandoned checkouts and messages actually sent, rather than treating all abandoned carts as contactable.
- Check conversion: Track completed orders tied to the recovery flow and the value of those orders using a consistent attribution window.
- Check customer experience: Monitor complaints, unsubscribes, SMS opt-outs, and support contacts about confusing or mistimed messages.
- Check the checkout itself: Review abandonment by step and device. If shoppers leave before entering contact details, reminders cannot reach them; fix the friction at that stage.
- Test carefully: Compare a change with a stable baseline and avoid attributing every recovered order to a message if shoppers may have returned on their own.
