The best fit depends on which airlines serve your home airport and usual routes, whether your eligible travel or other activity can earn status, and whether you can use the miles for trips you actually want. The available 2026 information supports a detailed look at American’s AAdvantage and Delta’s SkyMiles, but it does not support a complete threshold-by-threshold ranking against United’s MileagePlus.
How the programs compare on 2026 status qualification
Each program uses its own qualification currency and period, so the figures are not directly interchangeable. The table separates what is established from what is not stated in the current official material available for this comparison.
| Program | Qualification measure and period | 2026 thresholds and status duration |
|---|---|---|
| AAdvantage | Loyalty Points earned during a 12-month period beginning March 1. | Gold: 40,000; Platinum: 75,000; Platinum Pro: 125,000; Executive Platinum: 200,000 Loyalty Points. Status lasts from qualification through March 31 of the following full year. American’s 2026 status overview |
| SkyMiles | Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) earned during the January 1–December 31 calendar-year qualification period. | Exact 2026 tier thresholds are not stated in the available extracted text of Delta’s Medallion Program Overview. |
| MileagePlus | Current 2026 qualification currency and period are not established here. | Current 2026 thresholds and status-duration details are not stated in the substantive content available from United’s Premier qualification page. |
American says its 2026 status and reward requirements remained unchanged for a third consecutive year in its 2026 announcement. That is useful context for AAdvantage’s published thresholds, but it does not fill in the missing current United details or Delta threshold figures.
How earning rules can change the value of a program
A status target matters only if the activity you already expect to do can move you toward it. American and Delta both tie eligible flight earning to ticket price in many cases, but what counts as eligible differs by fare and marketing carrier.

AAdvantage
Under American’s terms effective March 1, 2026, eligible purchased American-marketed flights generally earn Base Miles and Loyalty Points based on the ticket price: base fare plus carrier-imposed charges, excluding government taxes and fees. Some partner-marketed flights and special fare types may instead earn based on distance and booking code. Eligible miles from credit cards and other partners can also earn Loyalty Points, subject to the program’s terms.
SkyMiles
For eligible Delta-marketed fares, general members earn five miles per eligible U.S. dollar, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees. Delta’s terms also provide additional miles per eligible dollar for Medallion members: two for Silver, three for Gold, four for Platinum, and six for Diamond. These are additional earning amounts, not a measure of what a mile is worth. Delta Main Basic earns neither SkyMiles nor MQD credit toward Medallion status. See Delta’s SkyMiles Program Rules and Medallion Benefits Terms and Conditions for applicable conditions.
Do not assume a partner flight or a low-priced or specially coded fare earns like a standard eligible ticket. Delta notes that partner-fare earning rules may change and advises members to check eligibility when booking; American’s terms likewise include exceptions. For a trip you are about to buy, confirm the marketed carrier, fare eligibility, and expected credit under the program’s current rules rather than estimating from the ticket total.
What makes miles useful in practice
A balance is valuable to you only if it can help book an itinerary you would take, at a mileage price and with restrictions you accept. A program’s headline earning rate cannot answer that by itself, and the information here does not establish a reliable cents-per-mile ranking among all three programs.
Rank #3
Delta says award travel is subject to seat availability, mileage requirements vary by flight, and passengers are responsible for taxes and fees. Partner-award terms may differ. Check a specific itinerary’s award price, availability, fees, and rules before deciding that a mile-earning opportunity is worthwhile; an attractive balance does not guarantee a seat on your preferred flight. Delta’s program rules provide the relevant conditions.
For AAdvantage and MileagePlus, this comparison does not establish current award prices, route-level availability, or a comparable set of redemption restrictions. Compare actual trips in each program’s booking channels rather than treating unverified program-wide mile values as settled facts.
Rank #4
How to choose the right program for your travel
- Start with your home airport and realistic routes. List the airlines that offer usable schedules to the places you travel, including connections you are willing to make. A program is a poor fit if reaching status means choosing inconvenient flights or paying more than you otherwise would.
- Estimate eligible activity, not just total spend. Use the fare rules to distinguish qualifying flight activity from taxes, excluded fares, and partner itineraries that may earn differently. For a status goal, compare your likely qualifying activity with the program’s published target.
- Check benefits against your own trips. Identify which specific elite benefits would make a material difference to your travel. Do not pursue status solely because a tier has a prominent name; the value depends on whether its benefits apply to the routes and situations you encounter.
- Test redemptions before assigning value to miles. Look for award options on dates and routes you would use, then account for mileage requirements, seat availability, cash charges, and applicable partner rules.
- Recheck the rules before committing. Thresholds, earning eligibility, benefits, and award conditions can change. Confirm current terms before buying a fare or making a loyalty decision.
What this comparison can—and cannot—decide
The published American figures allow a concrete 2026 AAdvantage status comparison, while Delta’s official overview establishes its MQD qualification period but not the tier cutoffs in the available text. Current United qualification details are not established by the official page content available here. That leaves no sound basis for declaring one of the three programs the overall status-threshold winner.
For a traveler deciding among them, the defensible choice is the program that aligns with accessible routes, eligible activity, useful benefits, and obtainable award trips. If United is a serious contender, check its current Premier rules directly before comparing status targets; its missing figures should not be treated as zero or inferred from older information.

Should a co-branded credit card decide the choice?
Not on this evidence alone. American’s terms say eligible credit-card and partner miles can contribute Loyalty Points, subject to conditions, but that does not establish that a particular card is worthwhile or that card spending is necessary to earn status. Annual fees, current offers, earning categories, benefits, and eligibility need to be considered separately before applying. Do not choose a program just to pursue a card offer without checking the current card terms and whether its benefits fit your finances and travel.
