It no longer accepts new applicants. Existing accounts were moved to the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select card on April 24, 2026, according to NerdWallet’s reporting. The benefits below are the launch-era terms from 2016, followed by what was reported to carry over after the switch.
Where the card stands today
The Aviator Red stopped accepting new applications in late 2025. Existing Barclays-issued accounts transitioned to Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select on April 24, 2026. Former cardholders could keep using the old card until they received and activated the replacement.
Some Aviator Red perks were kept for a limited time after the switch. NerdWallet reported that the annual companion certificate and an in-flight Wi-Fi credit were temporarily retained for former cardholders, subject to advance notice from Citi. Treat these as temporary transition benefits, not permanent card features, and check your own account notices before relying on them.
Benefits announced when the card launched
American Airlines’ December 2016 newsroom announcement set out the original feature list. These were launch terms. They are not a current offer, and they do not guarantee what a converted account provides today.

Sign-up offer and annual fee
At launch, the card offered 40,000 bonus miles after a first purchase within 90 days, with a $95 annual fee. Both figures describe the 2016 offer. They are not current pricing and do not show what a new or converted account would cost today.
What American Airlines said at launch
Catherine Nieburg, Director, Airline Partnerships, Barclaycard US, was quoted in the 2016 announcement: “Early boarding, first checked bag free and the opportunity to earn valuable AAdvantage® miles are just a few of the benefits cardmembers receive to enhance their American Airlines travel experience.”

How to check what applies to your account
- Locate the Citi communication about your conversion, which should be dated on or after April 24, 2026. Note any date given for ending the companion certificate or Wi-Fi credit.
- Read the cardmember agreement for the converted Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select account. Confirm the annual fee, the checked-bag and boarding terms, and the miles earned by category.
- Before each American Airlines trip, include your AAdvantage number in the reservation. AAdvantage terms say members need to do this to use program rewards and benefits, and the program may change its benefits.
- For companion travel, confirm that each traveler qualifies under the current terms for the bag benefit on that specific itinerary. The 2016 announcement limited the free bag to eligible domestic itineraries.
- If a legacy perk does not appear on your account, contact Citi and ask for the written terms that apply to your account, rather than relying on the 2016 announcement or secondhand reporting.
Who the old benefit list still matters to
The 2016 terms matter in two situations. The first is a long-time cardholder reviewing how a converted account compares with what they had before. The second is a reader comparing airline cards who wants a sense of what this card once offered. Neither situation calls for treating the launch features as current entitlements.

The Bottom Line
The AAdvantage Aviator Red is closed to new applicants, so the useful question now is whether your converted Citi account still gives you the checked-bag, boarding, and mileage benefits you depend on. Confirm those terms in writing rather than assuming the 2016 benefits carried over.
