Cooking is often treated as women’s work at home, but professional kitchens—particularly in leadership—are described in reporting and academic literature as male-dominated. A 2024 Sky News report cited women as 17% of professional chefs in the UK and said 8% of Michelin-starred restaurants were female-led. Those figures describe different groups, and the report’s reviewed page does not identify the underlying dataset or definitions.
What the figures say—and what they do not
The UK figures offer a snapshot, not a complete count of women’s status across the culinary world. Sky News reported in November 2024 that women made up 17% of professional chefs in the UK, while 8% of Michelin-starred restaurants were female-led. The first figure concerns chefs; the second concerns restaurants and leadership. They cannot be read as two measures of the same population, or as evidence that the figures are current official statistics. Sky News’s report does not expose the underlying dataset or definitions in the reviewed page.
India’s numbers require a separate qualification. A 2025 feature says official statistics are unavailable and cites a 2018 National Restaurant Association of India report estimating that women accounted for 10%–15% of professional chefs. That is a dated estimate attributed to the association, not a current national count. The same feature quotes a Bengaluru hotel-management institute department head who said the institute’s female-to-male student ratio was more than 1:3, compared with 1:9 two decades earlier. This is an interview-based example from one institution, not a national enrollment statistic. The 2025 feature provides both details.
Why domestic cooking does not translate into professional authority
The contradiction is not that women do not cook. It is that domestic expectations do not guarantee access to paid professional work, demanding kitchen stations, authority, or promotion. The Auckland University of Technology doctoral thesis Experiences of women executive chefs reviews research on both horizontal segregation—where women are placed or concentrated within kitchen work—and vertical segregation, which concerns who advances into senior positions. Its literature review describes barriers reported in prior studies; it does not establish that every kitchen operates in the same way.

Hiring, assignments and advancement
The thesis literature review identifies gender bias and sexist treatment, gendered assignments to stations, hierarchical barriers, exclusion from professional networks, wage disparity, and limited mentoring or role models among issues raised in earlier studies. These mechanisms matter at different points in a career: who is seen as suitable for a role, who gains experience in high-pressure stations, who is supported, and who is considered leadership material. The thesis synthesizes earlier literature and life histories of women executive chefs rather than providing a current census of kitchens worldwide. Read the AUT thesis.
Hours, physical demands and retention
The thesis review describes professional kitchens as physically and psychologically demanding, with long shifts, late nights and weekend work. Sky News’s 2024 article reports individual accounts from Sally Abé involving verbal abuse, an alleged workplace assault, long shifts and scarce breaks. Those are attributed experiences, not a claim that every kitchen is abusive. The AUT thesis also summarizes earlier research reporting higher attrition among women, but the evidence cited here does not support a single current attrition rate or a global comparison.

Practical conditions and workplace culture
Sky News also raised concerns about inadequate maternity provision and chef whites not designed around women’s bodies. These are concerns reported in that article, not a comprehensive audit of employers’ benefits or the workwear market. Together with the thesis literature, they point to a distinction between being able to enter a kitchen and having workable conditions and support to stay and progress.
Individual accounts show how authority can be challenged
Sky News’s report includes chefs Judy Joo and Anya Delport describing assumptions about women’s authority. Their accounts illustrate how professional credibility may be questioned even when a woman holds the role; they should be understood as named individuals’ experiences, not universal testimony. Sally Abé’s memoir offers another first-person account of working as a chef, but a memoir is not a representative survey of women in the industry.

How to read claims about representation
When comparing statistics, check whether they measure the share of all professional chefs, the share of head or executive chefs, or the share of restaurants led by women. Keep the country, year, definition and source attached to each number. The UK report and India feature use different geographies and evidence, and neither supports a global estimate. Figures about a restaurant’s particular team or one school’s student mix likewise cannot stand in for the industry as a whole.
