Tikker is a digital watch that counts down an estimated remaining lifespan beside the local time. In a 2020 first-person review, Time+Tide’s Luke Benedictus wore one for a week and found its mortality ticker confronting, its case oversized, and its effect on his priorities unexpectedly useful. The countdown is an estimate—not a personal prognosis or a date the watch can tell you you’ll die.
What the Tikker “death watch” displays
Time+Tide describes Tikker as a physical digital wristwatch with three rows on its display: years, months and days remaining; hours, minutes and seconds remaining; and the local time. The review does not establish that the watch monitors health or continually recalculates an individual’s risk.
That distinction matters: the number on the screen is an estimate, not a personal death date. Benedictus called the statistical figure a “vague approximation at best.” The reviewed article does not establish the exact formula, table version or validation method behind the countdown. What happened during Benedictus’s week wearing it
The countdown turned into life admin
Benedictus writes that seeing the countdown initially felt confronting. It prompted him to ask, “do I even have life insurance?”, review his cover, speak with his super fund and look up “how to make a will.” These are episodes from one reviewer’s week, not evidence that the watch reliably changes behavior for other people.

For Australian readers, Moneysmart’s general guidance is to consider a life-insurance policy’s coverage, exclusions, personal circumstances and medical history. Its claims comparison tool also notes that processing through a super fund may extend beyond the insurer’s claim time. Ordinary pleasures, with a running clock
The review also includes wine, sex, a day off and a family walk. Benedictus describes the odd mix of mortality anxiety and domestic life that the watch brought to his attention; later, he says he chose a more purposeful routine. Those details make the account personal rather than a product test of therapeutic or behavioral effects.

How the watch felt to wear
The 2020 review gives the watch’s width as 46 mm and its thickness as 10 mm. Benedictus found it large and clunky. That is his assessment of the model he wore, not a comparison with tested alternatives.
His final response was mixed: the countdown was imprecise and the case oversized, yet the persistent reminder helped him appreciate his family and daily life. Is Tikker also called the “Happiness Watch”?
Yes. In a companion story, Time+Tide used the name “Happiness Watch” and presented the countdown as a prompt to spend time deliberately. Tikker co-founder Daniel Iketani said: “This started out with the moniker of ‘The Death Watch’. But if you look at the the box, what it actually says is ‘The Happiness Watch’.” The different framing does not change what the display can establish: an estimated remaining lifespan, not an individual prognosis. If you come across a listing, check whether it is the actual countdown model, the item’s condition, seller identity, return terms, battery and reset behavior, and whether support is available. Does Tikker really tell you when you’ll die?
No. It displays a lifespan estimate, and the 2020 review itself describes that estimate as a vague approximation. The watch’s display should not be treated as a personal death date, health assessment or insurance recommendation.
