Could an ordinary rock used as a doorstop really be valuable amber? In this reported Romanian story, yes: a relative recognized the object’s potential after its owner died, and specialists later identified it as amber. The reported figure of about €1 million was a valuation—not a confirmed sale price.
How a streamside find became a doorstop
According to El País’s 2024 account, a woman in Colți, Romania, found a 3.5-kilogram piece of amber in a nearby stream and used it as a doorstop for years. Her identity is not stated in the report.
After the woman died in 1991, a relative inherited the property and recognized the stone’s potential. El País reports that the relative sold it to the Romanian state, which classified it as a national treasure. The report does not give the sale date or the amount paid.
What specialists reportedly established
El País says specialists at the Museum of History in Kraków confirmed that the piece was amber and estimated its age at 38.5 to 70 million years. That is a reported age range, not a precise dating result published in the account.

The article describes the object as among the largest known amber nuggets and attributes its reporting to Daniel Costache, director of the Buzău County Museum. Treat that description as the report’s characterization, not as an independently verified global ranking. Costache is quoted in Spanish as saying, “Su descubrimiento representa una gran trascendencia tanto a nivel científico como a nivel de museo” (“Its discovery is of great significance both scientifically and for the museum,” translated from the Spanish wording published by El País).
What the reported €1 million means
El País reports a valuation of about one million euros. The available account does not establish that as the Romanian state’s purchase price, a current appraisal, or the amount received by the relative. Calling it a million-euro sale would therefore overstate what is known.

What the museum confirms—and what it does not
The Buzău County Museum’s Amber Museum Colți page describes a collection that includes raw amber nuggets, jewelry, and tools used in prospecting, extraction, and processing, along with exhibits and interpretive features. The page also says a 3,480-gram amber lump is displayed at the museum headquarters in Buzău. It does not explicitly identify that lump as the doorstop find, so the two objects should not be assumed to be the same.
A 2024 management report from the Buzău County Council lists the doorstop story among international press coverage of the museum. That confirms the museum recorded the coverage, but does not independently authenticate the anecdote’s details.

Why this is not a lesson to appraise every rock
The story’s unusual outcome depended on identification: the object was reported as amber, then specialists reportedly confirmed it. It does not show that an ordinary stone—or an amber-colored object—has exceptional value. Without evidence of what a material is, where it came from, and how it has been assessed, the headline valuation cannot be applied to other finds.
