Stuff deputy editor Tom Morgan-Freelander says Mous’s 25L Optimal Protective Lid Backpack with UltraTex found the balance he wanted between an everyday bag and a short-trip travel pack. After a month of travel, he reports that it carried clothes and a wash bag, fit beneath an economy airline seat on his trip, and kept its contents dry through several surprise showers. His main reservation: the carabiner-style hook is fiddly when he needs frequent access.
Which Mous backpack did the reviewer take?
The reviewed bag is the Mous Optimal Protective Lid Backpack with UltraTex, 25L. Morgan-Freelander describes it as a middle ground between daily carry and a bag for an overnight work trip or weekend away. That is a personal assessment based on his month of travel, not an independent lab comparison.
It is not the same product as Mous’s Optimal Travel Backpack, a separate 40L model that expands to 45L. The distinction matters when judging capacity, bulk, and airline use.
What worked for the reviewer on the trip?
Enough room for a short stay
The reviewer says the 25L pack carried clothes and a wash bag while remaining manageable as an everyday bag. Its wide opening and several pockets made packing and organising useful for his mix of travel and daily use.

Comfort and weather performance
He found the adjustable shoulder straps comfortable and reports that the fabric resisted stains and weather. His contents stayed dry during several surprise showers on the trip. That is a report of real-world experience, not a waterproof rating or guarantee.
Under-seat fit on one trip
Morgan-Freelander says the 25L bag fit beneath an economy airline seat on his trip. That establishes his experience with that bag and journey only; it does not establish that the pack will qualify as a personal item on every carrier or fare.

What is the main drawback?
The reviewer’s chief complaint is the carabiner-style hook securing the main compartment. He found it fiddly for frequent access, particularly when the bag was full. If you often need to reach the main compartment while moving, that trade-off may matter more than the pocket layout or capacity.
How does it compare with Mous’s 40L travel backpack?
The larger Optimal Travel Backpack is designed for a different role: more packing capacity and overhead-bin cabin travel rather than under-seat personal-item use. Mous publishes these specifications and cautions on its product listing:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the price worth considering?
At publication in 2026, Morgan-Freelander reported paying $310/£300 for his UltraTex version and considered it expensive. That is the author’s reported price at that time, not a verified current price; check the retailer’s listing before buying. For a personal-finance decision, weigh the premium against how often you would use one bag for both everyday carry and short trips, and whether the fiddly main-compartment closure would frustrate you.
