A man digging for fishing worms near a summer house in the Stockholm area uncovered a roughly six-kilogram medieval silver hoard, the Stockholm County Administrative Board announced on September 18, 2025. Officials described it as potentially one of Sweden’s largest early medieval silver finds, but the coin count, final valuation and any payment to the finder had not yet been determined.
What was found in the hoard?
The deposit contained mostly silver coins, along with silver rings, pendants and beads. The objects had been placed in a copper cauldron. The regional authority reported a total weight of about six kilograms; that figure describes the hoard, not a count or valuation of its contents. The County Administrative Board’s announcement gives the official description.
How many coins were there?
The count was still being established when the authority announced the discovery. Antiquarian Sofia Andersson said it might reach about 20,000, while stressing that the exact number was not known. That figure is a preliminary estimate, not a completed inventory.
How old are the coins?
Most of the coins date to the 12th century. Some are marked “KANUTUS,” the Latin form of Knut, and are associated with the late-12th-century reign of Swedish king Knut Eriksson. Several less common coins depict a bishop holding a crozier. Archaeologists were documenting the objects and investigating the findspot, so the full interpretation was not settled in the announcement.

Where was it found, and what happens next?
The discovery was made in the Stockholm area, near a summer house, but officials withheld the precise location while archaeological work continued. The finder reported the hoard to the County Administrative Board. The authority said it would notify Sweden’s National Heritage Board, which would decide whether the state should redeem the find and compensate the finder. The announcement did not state a final valuation or payment.
Why “worth thousands” is not yet an established figure
The official announcement described the hoard’s weight and contents, but did not publish a monetary valuation. Its assessment that the find may be one of Sweden’s largest early medieval silver hoards concerns its archaeological significance; it does not establish a market price or the amount the finder may receive. Those outcomes were pending in the announcement.

What to do if you find a possible hoard in Sweden
The County Administrative Board advises people who discover a possible archaeological deposit to contact the regional authority. Its guidance says finds containing gold, silver, bronze or other copper alloy, as well as deposits believed to have been placed together, must be offered to the state for redemption.
