He reported the discovery to local authorities. Officials reportedly let him keep the gold after determining it was not an archaeological find; police also traced the bars and found no indication they had been stolen.
What was found in the backyard?
The find was made during pool excavation in Neuville-sur-Saône, France. It consisted of five gold bars and “many coins,” stored in plastic bags, according to CBS/AFP. The reports do not give the coins’ exact number, type, weight, or denomination.
How much was the buried gold worth?
November 2025 reports put the hoard’s value at about €700,000, which CBS/AFP rendered as roughly $800,000. That is a reported estimate, not a current valuation: the reports do not describe an appraisal method or provide an itemized value for the bars and coins. The Independent attributed the euro estimate to local authority reporting.
Why was he allowed to keep it?
The homeowner notified authorities, and officials reportedly allowed him to keep the find because it was not considered to come from an archaeological site or to have archaeological significance. CBS/AFP reported that police traced the bars by their unique numbers and determined they had been legally acquired, melted at a nearby refinery around 15–20 years earlier, and were not stolen.

CBS/AFP, citing Le Progrès, described the relevant French Civil Code wording as covering “any hidden or buried thing over which no one can prove their ownership, and which is discovered purely by chance,” and said: “Ownership of a treasure belongs to the one who finds it on their own property.” Those quotations are the wording reported in that account; they should not be treated as a universal rule. The outcome in this French case does not establish who owns buried property elsewhere, or how another find would be handled.
Who buried it—and why?
The previous property owner had died, and authorities reportedly had no clues about how the gold came to be buried. The reporting does not identify who hid it or explain the reason. Claims about the former owner’s motives or the gold’s purpose would be speculation.
