A Handy Garage Sale Pricing Guide for Your Next Clear-Out

Most ordinary garage-sale items should start around 10% to 25% of current replacement retail—but the right price depends on condition, demand, season, local buyers, and whether you value speed or maximum cash.

Most ordinary garage-sale items should start at 10% to 25% of their current new replacement price. Use the lower end for a fast clear-out, the higher end for clean, complete, branded, seasonal, or like-new goods, and research anything unusual or potentially valuable instead of applying a blanket percentage. This U.S.-focused guide covers practical starting prices, negotiation, safety, online alternatives, local rules, and what to do with leftovers.

The fastest way to price a garage-sale item

For an ordinary, clean, working household item with no special collector demand, use 10% to 25% of its current new replacement price as a starting point. Use the lower end when your priority is clearing the house quickly; use the higher end for like-new, complete, branded, seasonal, or locally desirable goods.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That is a practical starting band—not a national rule or an appraisal. Published guidance ranges from about 10% of retail to one-third of retail, while the City of Mountain View’s municipal guide suggests 20% to 25% for many items and 50% to 75% for some tools. The difference reflects different goals, categories, conditions, and local markets. See the guidance from Goodwill of the Heartland, Angi, Mountain View, and YardSaleSearch.

For a more useful formula, think of your price as:

Garage-sale starting price = realistic local used value × sale objective × condition adjustment

In practice:

  • Clearance-first: roughly 5% to 10% of current replacement retail, or simple $1, $2, and $5 prices.
  • Balanced cash and decluttering: roughly 10% to 25% for common, clean, working goods.
  • Like-new, branded, complete, or seasonal: roughly 20% to 40% if local demand supports it.
  • Tools, premium appliances, collectibles, designer goods, rare media, and newer electronics: research actual used-market sales instead of relying on a retail percentage.

Prices below are for a typical U.S. neighborhood sale as of . Region, season, condition, brand, demand, and whether you want maximum money or maximum speed can change the result.

Why garage-sale prices are different from retail prices

A garage sale is a local, immediate, low-overhead market. The buyer usually expects a substantial discount, inspects the item personally, takes it home immediately, and receives limited or no return rights, warranty, shipping service, or national selection.

You are therefore pricing more than the object. You are pricing speed, convenience, space recovered, and the amount of selling work you are willing to do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A retail price may include new condition, packaging, customer support, returns, warranty coverage, overhead, and delivery. An eBay price may reflect a national audience but also shipping, platform fees, listing effort, and waiting time. A thrift-store price may include sorting, display, and operating costs. None is automatically the correct price for your driveway.

Printable garage-sale pricing chart

Use this chart as a practical starting point for ordinary U.S. garage-sale condition—not as a verified national transaction database. Clean, complete, working, and desirable items can start higher. Stained, damaged, incomplete, outdated, or untested items should start lower or be removed from the sale.

Category Suggested starting price Adjustments
Adult everyday tops $1–$3 Raise for excellent branded or new-with-tags clothing; reduce for stains, wear, or outdated styles.
Jeans and pants $3–$5 Check size, current style, condition, and stains.
Coats and jackets $5–$15 Season and premium brands can justify more.
Children’s clothing $0.50–$2 each Bundles usually sell faster.
Baby clothes $3–$5 for 5–10 pieces Exclude recalled or unsafe baby gear; keep sizes grouped.
Shoes $2–$10 Cleanliness, wear, brand, and current demand matter greatly.
Paperback books $0.50–$1 Try “fill a bag” pricing for large quantities.
Hardcover books $1–$3 Research signed, first-edition, collectible, and specialist books.
DVDs and common CDs $1–$2 Rare, boxed, or out-of-print media should be researched.
Common vinyl records $1–$2 Popular, unusual, and collectible pressings may be worth much more.
Small toys $0.50–$2 Bundle loose toys by theme or age range.
Complete board games $2–$5 Confirm every piece is present before pricing.
LEGO and collectible building sets $5–$20 starting point Research complete, retired, boxed, and model-specific sets.
Utensils and mugs $0.50–$1 Group similar pieces or offer a multi-item price.
Pots and pans $2–$5 Brand, material, size, and condition can change the price.
Small appliances $5–$20 Test them and label defects clearly.
Working stand mixer $30–$60 starting point Check the exact model, attachments, and sold prices.
Dishes and glassware $0.50–$1 each Complete sets and recognizable patterns deserve research.
Dining chairs $5–$15 each Price matching chairs as a set when possible.
End tables and nightstands $5–$20 Solid wood and attractive current styles can command more.
Coffee tables $10–$30 Stage and photograph large furniture well.
Dressers $15–$50 Check stability, odors, damage, and applicable recalls.
Sofas $25–$75 starting point Upholstery, odors, pet or smoke exposure, and pickup logistics dominate value.
Hand tools $5–$25 Brand, rust, completeness, and functionality matter.
Small power tools $10–$50 Include the battery and charger when applicable.
Chargers and cables $1–$2 Label compatibility clearly.
Bluetooth speakers $3–$10 Test pairing, sound, charging, and battery condition.
Older phones and tablets $10–$50 starting point Identify the exact model, reset it, and disclose locks, cracks, and battery condition.
Older laptops $25–$75 starting point State operating condition, battery status, storage, and charger availability.
Outdoor and sporting goods Research or use comparable local prices Bikes, camping gear, lawn equipment, and sports equipment vary too much by brand and season for one reliable flat range.
Jewelry, coins, designer goods, artwork, and collectibles Research first Do not price by weight, retail percentage, or appearance alone.

The clothing, household, furniture, toy, and electronics bands are synthesized from published category guidance such as Angi’s pricing table and Yardmine’s guide. They are useful for getting started, but they are not appraisals.

When to use a flat price instead of a percentage

Percentage-based pricing is most useful for furniture, working appliances, tools, bicycles, electronics, high-quality clothing, and specialty goods. It gives you room to account for meaningful differences in value.

Use flat prices or bundles for common books, ordinary clothing, kitchen utensils, mugs, glasses, loose toys, CDs, DVDs, small décor, cords, and miscellaneous accessories. A $1 table, $2 table, or “fill a bag for $5” box reduces decision fatigue for both you and the buyer, speeds checkout, and prevents a ten-minute negotiation over a mug.

Bundle items that naturally belong together:

  • Children’s clothing by size and season.
  • Cooking utensils or bakeware.
  • Craft supplies by project type.
  • Loose toys by age range or theme.
  • Books by genre.
  • Chargers and cables only when compatibility is clearly labeled.

How condition, brand, season, and completeness change the price

Condition

  • New, unopened, or tags attached: usually the strongest garage-sale category. Angi cites 30% to 40% of retail for unworn items with tags, but local demand still controls the result.
  • Like-new and complete: price above the ordinary used range if the item is clean and current.
  • Clean but used: use the normal chart range.
  • Visible wear: discount enough that the buyer does not feel misled.
  • Broken, incomplete, stained, or untested: use a clearly marked low “as-is” price only when the item is safe, or remove it from the sale.

“Untested” is not the same as “working.” A buyer should not have to discover a defect after paying.

Removable Garage Sale Stickers, Yard Sale Price Stickers, 3/4" Price Labels
  • Quickly and easily mark your items with pre-printed price tag stickers ranging from 25 cents to $20, plus 'Make Offer' labels.

  • Each pack contains 1,400 color-coded, 3/4-inch stickers, perfect for garage sales, yard sales, bake sales, craft fairs, farmers' markets, and more!

Brand

Brand matters most for tools, outdoor equipment, shoes and coats, small appliances, furniture, electronics, designer clothing, and children’s gear. But a brand name is not proof of current value. Verify high-value or model-specific brands against recent sold listings.

Completeness

Original manuals, boxes, chargers, remotes, matching lids, complete game pieces, original accessories, and all hardware can materially improve the price. Missing essentials should reduce it sharply. Tape loose parts to the item or place them in a labeled bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Season

Put seasonal goods out just before or during their season, as Goodwill of the Heartland recommends:

  • Fans and air conditioners before summer.
  • Snow gear and heaters before winter.
  • Holiday décor before the relevant holiday.
  • Camping and outdoor equipment before vacation season.
  • School supplies before the school year.

Local market

Nearby buyers matter more than a national average. A family-heavy neighborhood may support stronger prices for baby goods, toys, bicycles, sports equipment, and furniture. A neighborhood with many homeowners or DIY projects may be better for tools, lawn equipment, building supplies, and hardware. Check nearby garage and estate sales before the event; Angi and YardSaleSearch both recommend local comparisons.

Three pricing examples

A $40 ordinary appliance

A clean, working appliance with a current replacement price of $40 might start around $5 to $10 in a balanced sale. If it is new in the box, complete, and seasonally useful, test a higher price. If it is untested or missing a necessary part, price it as-is or do not sell it.

A $300 stand mixer

A like-new $300 mixer might begin around $40 to $60 at a garage sale, provided the exact model, attachments, and working condition support that range. Check model-specific sold prices first; a desirable model may be better suited to Facebook Marketplace or eBay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A $100 tool set

Do not automatically apply the ordinary household-goods percentage. Identify the brand, tool count, sizes, case, rust, and missing pieces. Mountain View’s municipal guide allows substantially higher tool pricing—50% to 75% of retail in some circumstances—but that is guidance, not a guarantee. A complete premium set can justify research; an incomplete generic set may need a bundle price.

Furniture, appliances, tools, and electronics need special handling

Furniture

Clean furniture, show its dimensions, and stage it so buyers can imagine using it. Mention solid wood, storage, recent repairs, and any odor, smoke, pet, water, or structural history honestly. For sofas and other bulky items, local pickup often matters more than the original purchase price. State whether the buyer must carry and transport the piece, and set a pickup deadline for anyone who asks you to hold it.

Appliances

Test small appliances before the sale and label them “works,” “untested,” or “as-is.” Show the model number, voltage if relevant, included accessories, and any defect. Recalled appliances should not be sold casually; check the official recall databases before resale.

  • Bright and vibrant colors: each digital price sticker has its own color, respectively, blue, red, purple, etc. Bright colors are more likely to attract customers' attention to your merchandise as a way to increase your garage sale.

Tools and outdoor equipment

Separate premium, complete, working tools from mixed or incomplete lots. Include batteries, chargers, cases, blades, bits, manuals, and attachments when available. Remove heavy rust and disclose repairs. For lawn equipment, generators, fuel-related equipment, and other potentially hazardous products, confirm that the item is safe and legal to sell in your location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phones, tablets, computers, and smart devices

Identify the exact model, storage capacity, operating condition, battery status, charger, cracks, lock status, and missing parts. Factory-reset the device and remove personal accounts before selling. Facebook’s electronics guidance recommends removing personal information, recording the serial number, describing the condition accurately, and using the actual asking price rather than a misleading “$1” placeholder. See Facebook’s electronics guidance.

How to research an unusual or valuable item

Research first if an item is branded, vintage, rare, new in box, model-specific, or plausibly worth more than $50 to $100 online. This is especially important for vintage Pyrex and other collectible cookware, recognizable vintage furniture, high-end tools, rare records and books, designer clothing and handbags, musical instruments, newer Apple devices, gaming equipment, cameras, audio gear, toys, and games.

Quick eBay completed-listing method

  1. Open eBay Advanced Search.
  2. Search the exact brand, model number, edition, size, or pattern.
  3. Select Completed listings.
  4. Compare several genuinely similar results by condition, completeness, accessories, and shipping.

eBay’s pricing guidance explains how completed listings can show what comparable items sold for. Do not use an active listing as proof of value: an unsold asking price proves only that someone requested it.

eBay Product Research

As of August 2026, sellers with Seller Hub access can use Seller Hub → Research → Product research. eBay says this tool can show up to three years of sales data, average sale price, sold-price range, average shipping costs, number of sellers, selling format, and—when applicable—sell-through rate for recent sales. It also incorporates accepted Best Offer prices more completely than ordinary completed-listing searches. Details are in eBay Product Research.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use sold data intelligently:

  • Search the exact model or edition, not just “camera,” “blender,” or “record.”
  • Match new, used, refurbished, and parts-only condition.
  • Check whether the charger, box, accessories, and original parts are included.
  • Compare several recent sales rather than relying on one unusually high result.
  • Remember that online prices include national reach and may involve shipping, fees, packing, returns, and waiting.

A garage-sale price can reasonably be below an online sold price because the driveway buyer receives immediate possession but not national selection, shipping service, or an online return process.

How much negotiation room should you leave?

Set your minimum acceptable price before the sale starts. For $1 to $5 goods, mark the amount you actually want. For furniture and higher-priced items, price modestly above your floor so you can accept a reasonable offer without regret. YardSaleSearch recommends deciding on a bottom price first, while Angi suggests becoming more willing to haggle later in the day.

A simple markdown plan:

  • Opening: use normal marked prices. If traffic is strong, keep early prices firm.
  • Midday: offer bundle discounts or selectively reduce slow-moving items.
  • Final hour: use “make a reasonable offer,” a half-price table, a fill-a-bag deal, or a free box.
  • After closing: move selected valuable items online, donate usable leftovers, recycle electronics, and dispose of unsafe goods properly.

Package discounts are usually easier than negotiating every item: “Any three books for $2,” “two lamps for $10,” or “everything in this box for $5.”

Tag and display items so buyers can decide quickly

  • Price almost everything with large, legible tags.
  • Use category signs for bins and tables.
  • Keep similar prices together.
  • Use color-coded stickers or seller initials for a multi-household sale.
  • Put valuable items where they can be watched.
  • Hang clothing by size and group it by type.
  • Keep electronics near an extension cord or testing station.
  • Label items “works,” “untested,” or “as-is.”
  • Include dimensions for furniture.
  • Tape loose parts to the item or put them in a labeled bag.

The City of Mountain View guide specifically recommends price tags or a price-list sheet, seller initials or color-coded stickers for multi-household sales, a tape measure, and an electrical outlet for testing appliances and electronics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Make an offer” can work for a large table, unusual collectible, or high-value piece, but it creates uncertainty. Most ordinary items should have visible prices so buyers do not have to ask or guess.

What should not be sold at a garage sale?

Recalled products

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says selling recalled products is unlawful, including secondhand sales, unless an official recall remedy has been applied where permitted. Check the CPSC recalls database and SaferProducts.gov before reselling unfamiliar or safety-sensitive products. CPSC reseller guidance is available through its page on stopping the sale of recalled products.

High-risk children’s products

Use particular caution with cribs, bassinets, baby gates, play yards, dressers and nursery furniture, car seats, boosters, and bicycle helmets. Do not sell a nursery product that is broken, wobbly, incomplete, missing safety parts or labels, or recalled. See the CPSC resale guidance and its Resellers Guide to Selling Safer Products.

For a car seat, sell only if you can verify the model, manufacture date, recall status, completeness, crash history, and manufacturer instructions. If any of those are unknown, donation or disposal is safer than a casual sale. This is a safety recommendation; applicable rules can vary by location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medicines and other exclusions

Do not put prescription medicine in a garage sale. FDA guidance explains that prescription drugs are intended for the person to whom they were prescribed. Use a drug take-back program or an approved disposal method; see the FDA prescription and OTC drug FAQ and its medicine-disposal guidance.

Also exclude or carefully handle hazardous chemicals and leaking containers, ammunition and weapons or other regulated items, damaged electrical cords and unsafe appliances, used or expired cosmetics and personal-care products, counterfeit branded goods, food with uncertain storage history, and anything containing sensitive personal information. State and local rules may impose additional restrictions.

Garage sale, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay?

Item or situation Usually better channel Why
Common low-value household goods Garage sale Local volume and immediate clearance outweigh the effort of listing and shipping.
Bulky furniture with local demand Garage sale or Facebook Marketplace Local pickup avoids shipping; strong photos and dimensions help.
Newer electronics Facebook Marketplace or eBay A larger audience may support a better price after account removal and testing.
Rare, collectible, or model-specific goods eBay or a specialist marketplace National buyers are more likely to recognize the value.
Designer clothing or jewelry Consignment, specialist buyer, or authenticated marketplace Authentication and the right audience can matter more than speed.
Antiques and artwork Specialist dealer, auction, or estate-sale professional Condition, provenance, and attribution may require expertise.
Whole-house liquidation Estate-sale company or auctioneer Professional staging and marketing may justify the cost and effort.
Clean but low-value leftovers Donation Donation is often more efficient than storing or individually listing them.
Broken or unsafe goods Proper recycling or disposal Do not transfer a safety problem to another buyer.

Consumer Reports describes these channels as trade-offs involving value, effort, audience, fees, shipping, and convenience. A useful rule is: sell common items locally, research small valuable items online, and do not spend an hour listing something that might bring $3.

Facebook Marketplace safety for higher-value local sales

For local online sales, keep communication on Facebook or Messenger, be cautious of urgent requests and overpayments, never trust payment screenshots, and confirm payment in the actual account. Do not send deposits or refund a supposed overpayment. For valuable goods, demonstrate the item in person and choose a safe meeting arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that cash or ordinary in-person person-to-person transactions qualify for Purchase Protection. Facebook’s guidance is available in its pages on responsible buying and selling and Marketplace scams.

Permits, signs, payments, and tax basics

Permits and local rules

There is no single nationwide garage-sale permit rule. Requirements vary by city, county, HOA, frequency, signage, and neighborhood. For example, Ceres, California requires a permit and lists a fee, while Des Plaines, Illinois says an occasional garage or yard sale does not require one. Downey, California lists a permit fee and a two-per-calendar-year limit effective July 6, 2026.

Cash and digital payments

Prepare small bills and change, keep cash secure, and agree on the price before handing over an item. For digital payment, verify the transaction in the payment account or app itself—not from a screenshot, email, or buyer’s claim.

Taxes

The IRS says a gain from selling personal property is taxable, while a loss on the sale of personal-use property generally is not deductible. A personal item sold for less than its purchase price generally does not create taxable gain, but selling for more than your basis is different. See the IRS Form 1099-K FAQs and Publication 544.

This brief rule is for ordinary personal-use property. Inherited property, business inventory, investment property, collectibles, and repeated reselling can have different treatment. Keep basic records of unusual or profitable sales and consult a tax professional when the situation is more than a one-time household clear-out.

A practical pricing decision tree

  1. Is it safe and legal to sell? Remove recalled, unsafe, contaminated, prohibited, or unverified safety-sensitive items. Erase personal data from electronics.
  2. Could it be worth more than a typical garage-sale item? Research branded, vintage, rare, model-specific, new-in-box, collectible, designer, and specialty goods—especially anything plausibly worth more than $50 to $100 online.
  3. Is it bulky or expensive to ship? Prefer a local sale or Facebook Marketplace when transport is easier than shipping. Small valuable items may benefit from eBay’s broader audience.
  4. Is your priority speed or maximum money? Use low flat prices and bundles for speed; research, better photos, and patience for maximum return; and a hybrid approach for a balanced result.
  5. Set the floor. Decide the minimum price before the sale, then mark the item modestly above that floor if negotiation is likely.

Common pricing mistakes

  • Pricing from emotion: what you paid and what an item means to you are not current market values.
  • Using active listings: an unsold asking price is not evidence of what buyers pay. Prioritize sold listings.
  • Applying one percentage to everything: a paperback, a premium tool, and a collectible camera need different methods.
  • Copying thrift-store prices: thrift stores have different costs, presentation, inventory, and audience.
  • Skipping research: a rare record, vintage toy, designer bag, or specialized tool can be worth far more online than at a driveway sale.
  • Leaving items unpriced: buyers often skip items when asking feels awkward or the seller appears uncertain.
  • Overpricing furniture: transport, space, odor, stains, pets, style, and pickup often outweigh the original cost.
  • Selling untested electronics: “probably works” should never be priced like “tested and working.”
  • Holding items indefinitely: set a pickup deadline and do not remove bulky goods from sale without a clear agreement.
  • Ignoring the end state: the result includes cash, space recovered, time spent, and the cost of handling leftovers.

What to do with leftovers

Decide the end state before opening the sale. Reprice slow-moving items once, then make a deliberate choice:

  • Move selected high-value or unusual items to eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or a specialist channel.
  • Donate clean, usable, low-value goods.
  • Recycle electronics through an appropriate program.
  • Use proper disposal for chemicals, medicines, leaking containers, and other hazardous materials.
  • Discard unsafe, contaminated, severely damaged, or incomplete items that cannot responsibly be sold.

Do not turn unsold inventory into a new storage pile. For most sellers, a successful clear-out is measured by both the money collected and the space reclaimed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final garage-sale checklist

  • Is every item safe and legal to sell?
  • Did you check recalls for safety-sensitive products?
  • Is it clean, complete, and tested where appropriate?
  • Did you research anything branded, vintage, rare, collectible, or plausibly worth more than $50 to $100 online?
  • Did you use sold listings rather than active asking prices?
  • Are ordinary low-value items grouped into clear flat-price tables or bundles?
  • Are tags legible and are furniture dimensions visible?
  • Did you decide your minimum acceptable price before the sale?
  • Are electronics reset and free of personal accounts and data?
  • Did you check permits, HOA rules, sign restrictions, and local limits?
  • Are payment and scam precautions ready?
  • Do you already know where leftovers will go?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I base my garage-sale price on what I originally paid?

Usually, no. For common household goods, use the current cost to replace the item—not necessarily what you originally paid—as a practical anchor. Then adjust for condition, completeness, brand, season, and local demand. The original purchase price matters mainly for tax records or unusual items whose value has changed substantially.

How do I price a rare or valuable item?

Use sold listings, not active asking prices. Search the exact model, edition, or pattern on eBay through Advanced Search → Completed listings. If you have Seller Hub access, Seller Hub → Research → Product research can provide broader sales data. Compare condition, accessories, shipping, and several recent sales before setting a local price.

Do I need a permit or owe tax on a garage sale?

Not automatically. Permit, sign, HOA, and frequency rules vary by city and county. Check your local government and HOA before advertising. Tax treatment also depends on whether you sold personal-use property at a gain, sold inherited or business property, or regularly resell goods.

The Bottom Line

For most ordinary garage-sale goods, start at 10% to 25% of the current replacement price, then adjust for condition, brand, completeness, season, local demand, and your need for speed. Use flat prices for common low-value items, research anything unusual or potentially valuable using sold listings, and remove recalled, unsafe, privacy-sensitive, or prohibited goods from the sale.
