A short-haul cabin-crew day can involve several flights, with briefing and preparation before the first departure, ground work between sectors, and post-flight duties after the last one. The exact pattern depends on the airline and roster. Crucially, the working day is not just the time spent in the air: the applicable rules define duty to include required reporting and other work around the flights.
When does a cabin-crew duty day begin and end?
Under the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) Air Operations rules, a flight duty period (FDP) starts when a crew member is required to report for duty. It includes one sector or a series of sectors and ends when the aircraft has stopped and its engines are shut down after the crew member’s final operating sector. That makes the FDP broader than airborne time.
EASA distinguishes the FDP from the wider duty period: duty ends only when the crew member is free of all duties, including post-flight work. So the end of the last flight does not necessarily mark the end of the workday. See the definitions in the Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, Revision 24 (March 2026).
What might happen over the course of a short-haul shift?
There is no single timetable for every airline. The outline below shows the kinds of work a duty may involve, not a universal sequence or set of durations. EASA requires operators to set report times that allow ground duties to be completed and to account for turnaround time in schedules.

Before the first departure
The duty begins at the required report time, which allows for ground work before departure. Crew may prepare and attend a briefing before boarding; the specific tasks and timing depend on the operator.
Operating flights
Depending on the roster, one duty can include a series of short-haul sectors rather than a single flight. Each sector adds another operating flight to the same broader duty period.

Between sectors
Time on the ground between flights is part of the operational day. It may be used for turnaround work and preparation for the next sector, so it should not automatically be treated as a long rest break. The rules require schedules to account for turnaround time but do not establish one typical turnaround length.
After the last sector
The FDP ends when the aircraft stops and the engines are shut down after the final operating sector. Any required post-flight work remains part of the duty period until the crew member is released from all duties.

Why can one short-haul roster feel more tiring than another?
Flight count alone does not describe workload. Sector count, total duty time, longer sits between flights, the timing of duties, and the rest available between them can all matter. When comparing jobs or rosters, look at the whole pattern rather than just the number of flights.
- Required report and finish times, including repeated early starts, late finishes, or night duties.
- Number of sectors and total duty length.
- Turnaround or sit time between sectors.
- Whether duties begin and end at the crew member’s home base or involve time away.
- Rest opportunities between duties and the rules that apply in the relevant jurisdiction.
A study of 7,149 Brazilian short- and medium-haul rosters from 2023, analyzing schedules under RBAC 117 rules, found that duty time, sector count, and a combined sector/long-sit measure were associated with 70.1% of the highest predicted fatigue scores and 60.6% of the highest predicted sleepiness scores. The paper, posted on March 22, 2026, reports modeled associations in that roster sample—not universal rates, proof of causation, or figures specific to every cabin crew member. Rest rules depend on where the crew member operates
There is no single global rest rule. In the United States, FAA guidance says that most scheduled flight-attendant duty periods of 14 hours or less require at least nine consecutive hours of scheduled rest, subject to exceptions and a requirement for a longer rest period later. Consult the FAA flight-attendant duty and rest FAQ for the U.S. rule and its qualifications.
EASA’s European framework instead sets operator responsibilities for planning within applicable limits and providing sufficient rest. The FAA and EASA frameworks apply in different jurisdictions; one should not be used as a worldwide rule or substituted for the other.
