SkyTeam has two alliance-wide recognition levels: Elite and Elite Plus. You earn one through a member airline’s own frequent-flyer program—not through a universal SkyTeam account or mileage target. The airline program sets the qualification rules; SkyTeam status determines which alliance benefits may apply when you travel.
What are the SkyTeam status levels?
SkyTeam maps tiers in its member airlines’ frequent-flyer programs to two alliance recognition levels. Once your airline tier qualifies, other SkyTeam airlines can recognize the corresponding alliance level, but your membership account and miles remain with the program where you earned them. SkyTeam directs travelers to their chosen airline program for the applicable qualification rules and mileage details (SkyTeam frequent-flyer programs).

SkyTeam says, “There is no ‘SkyTeam’ program or card because the alliance already brings together the frequent flyer programs of all member airlines” (SkyTeam frequent-flyer programs). In practical terms, select a member airline’s program, earn its qualifying tier, and use that program’s account when booking or adding your frequent-flyer number.

There is no single SkyTeam-wide mileage threshold. Each participating airline sets its own earning rules, qualification period, tier validity, and renewal requirements. A tier in one airline program may map to Elite or Elite Plus; confirm the current mapping and requirements with that program rather than assuming that a particular number of miles earns alliance status.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose a program. SkyTeam recommends considering the member airline whose routes match your travel or the airline you fly most often (SkyTeam frequent-flyer programs).
- Check its current status rules. Review what activity qualifies, when the qualification period ends, how long the tier lasts, and what is required to renew it. These conditions differ by program.
- Verify the alliance mapping. Check which SkyTeam level the airline tier confers. Do not confuse the airline’s tier name with the alliance recognition level.
- Credit eligible travel to that program. SkyTeam says a traveler can earn with only one frequent-flyer program per flight. Add the selected program’s number and check its rules for eligible fares and flights.
When comparing programs, weigh the routes you actually use, qualification and renewal rules, tier validity, alliance-level mapping, and whether the benefits are useful at your usual airports. A lower threshold is not automatically better if the program’s routes or benefits do not fit your travel.
What benefits come with Elite and Elite Plus?
SkyTeam publishes the following benefits, but implementation can vary by operating airline and airport. Its benefits information advises travelers to check applicable conditions and enter their frequent-flyer number before travel (SkyTeam benefits).
| Benefit | Elite | Elite Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Extra baggage allowance | 10 kg extra, or one additional bag where the piece concept applies | 20 kg extra, or one additional bag where the piece concept applies |
| Priority check-in and baggage drop-off | Published benefit | Included among Elite benefits |
| Priority seating, boarding, airport standby, and waitlisting | Published benefit | Included among Elite benefits |
| SkyPriority recognition, priority at transfer desks, and priority baggage handling | Not stated for Elite | Published benefit |
| Security and immigration fast-track | Not stated for Elite | Where available |
| Lounge access | Not listed as an Elite benefit | Available on qualifying itineraries, subject to policy and exceptions |
| Full-fare economy reservation on a qualifying sold-out long-haul international flight | Not stated for Elite | May be available when booked at least 24 hours before departure; conditions apply |
The baggage figures are SkyTeam’s published allowances; the airline’s baggage concept and itinerary rules determine how an allowance applies. Priority services may not be available at every airport. Check the operating airline’s conditions for your flight (SkyTeam extra baggage; SkyTeam benefits).

Does SkyTeam Elite Plus get lounge access?
Elite Plus includes lounge access on qualifying same-day itineraries operated by SkyTeam airlines. SkyTeam’s policy describes access at departure and transfer airports, not at the destination after arrival. An eligible Elite Plus member may bring one guest, who must travel on the same SkyTeam-operated flight. Lounge rules and itinerary exclusions apply, so confirm eligibility for the actual airports and flights using the SkyTeam lounge finder and the relevant airline’s rules.
Rank #3
There is a specific Delta Sky Club exception: certain Delta SkyMiles members whose status is equivalent to Elite Plus do not receive complimentary access in the circumstances set out in SkyTeam’s policy. That restriction does not apply to members of other SkyTeam frequent-flyer programs. Consult the SkyTeam lounge-access policy for the conditions and exceptions.
On 6 October 2025, SkyTeam announced that more than 70 lounges had become accessible to Elite Plus travelers on domestic itineraries. That announcement is not a blanket guarantee for every domestic flight or lounge; check the live finder and itinerary rules before relying on access (SkyTeam).
Quick Recap
What to check before relying on a benefit
- Confirm that your current airline-program tier maps to Elite or Elite Plus.
- Check the operating airline’s baggage and priority-service rules for the specific itinerary.
- For lounge access, check the departure and transfer lounges, same-day itinerary conditions, guest rules, and any airline-specific exception.
- Add the correct frequent-flyer number to your booking; SkyTeam’s benefits information recommends entering it before travel.
