Street parking in New York City can cost $1.50 to $5.50 for the first hour, depending on the meter zone; a listed municipal garage schedule starts at $7 for an hour. Those figures are examples from different schedules, not a citywide street-versus-garage price guarantee. Budget using the rate, time limit, and restrictions at the specific space or garage you plan to use.
What NYC street parking costs
NYC DOT’s published passenger-vehicle meter rates vary by zone. The rates below are the listed prices for the first and second hours; the meter or posted sign at your space controls the actual terms.
| Meter zone | Area described by NYC DOT | First hour | Second hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| M1 | Midtown Core and Lower Manhattan | $5.50 | $9.00 |
| M2 | Manhattan south of 96th Street | $5.00 | $8.25 |
| M3 | Manhattan from 96th to 110th Streets | $3.00 | $5.00 |
| 1 | Business districts outside Manhattan | $2.50 | $5.00 |
| 2 | Neighborhood retail districts | $2.00 | $3.00 |
| 3 | Other metered locations | $1.50 | $2.50 |
These are NYC DOT’s published rates, accessed in 2026, not a quote for every space or time period. Session limits depend on location and vehicle type: NYC DOT says maximum meter sessions range from one to 15 hours. Check the sign and meter before estimating a longer stay or full-day cost. NYC DOT’s rates and zones lists the zone information.
How to estimate your parking budget
- Identify the exact space or garage. Meter rates and restrictions vary block by block, and garage rates vary by facility.
- Check the rate and maximum stay. Use the posted sign and meter, including the time limits, rather than assuming the first-hour price applies for the whole visit.
- Estimate the duration you need. Compare the applicable meter charges and any limit on the session with the total price quoted by a specific garage.
- Confirm when the rules apply. Check the posted hours, cleaning restrictions, and current suspension calendar before leaving the car.
This comparison is more useful than assuming street parking is always cheaper: a low first-hour meter rate may not suit a long stay, while a garage’s total depends on its own schedule and terms.

Paying at a meter or with ParkNYC
NYC311 says ParkNYC mobile payment has no usage fee and follows the same rates and time limits as the corresponding meter. You can also pay at the on-street meter. Check the instructions at the space: pay-by-plate meters require your plate information, while some older pay-and-display locations require a receipt on the dashboard. See NYC311’s ParkNYC payment guidance and NYC DOT’s meter payment information.
Rules that can change the cost—or rule out a space
NYC DOT says metered regulations are generally not in effect on Sundays or major legal holidays, but exceptions apply. The city’s 2026 alternate-side suspension calendar covers scheduled suspensions; a street-cleaning suspension does not automatically cancel every other parking rule. Verify the current calendar and read all signs at the location before parking.
