A 3.5-kilogram piece of amber found near Colți, Romania, reportedly sat in a home as a doorstop for decades before a relative recognized its significance. EL PAÍS reported an estimated value of around €1 million—but that figure is not a confirmed sale price.
How an amber nugget became a doorstop
The object was not an ordinary rock: it was a large amber nugget reportedly found in a streambed in Colți, in southeastern Romania. An elderly woman kept it as a doorstop for decades. After her death, a relative inherited it, realized it might be valuable and sold it to the Romanian state, according to EL PAÍS’s 2024 report.
The family also told the newspaper that burglars once stole some gold jewelry but left the nugget behind. “In their frantic search for valuables, they overlooked the real treasure that was there before their eyes,” the family said, as quoted by EL PAÍS.
What the $1 million headline gets wrong
EL PAÍS described the nugget’s value as approximately €1 million. A later, title-matching retelling used $1 million in its headline but gave €1 million in the article body. Neither reviewed report establishes the amount the state actually paid, and neither provides a formal appraisal document. The defensible description is an estimated value of around €1 million, not a verified sale price.

That distinction matters: a reported valuation and a completed transaction are different financial facts. The coverage does not explain the valuation method or show that a buyer paid that amount.
What is known about the specimen
- Weight: 3.5 kilograms (about 7.7 pounds), as reported by EL PAÍS in 2024.
- Estimated age: Specialists from the Museum of History in Krakow estimated the amber to be between 38.5 million and 70 million years old. This is a broad estimate, not a precise date.
- Status and reported location: The Romanian state classified the nugget as a national treasure. EL PAÍS reported that the Provincial Museum of Buzău was keeping it at the time of publication.
Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzău, said: “Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level.” The quotation is reproduced as it appeared in EL PAÍS’s English-language report.

Why Buzău amber has scientific interest
Romania has significant amber deposits, and EL PAÍS describes Buzău County as a region where amber is abundant. Regional amber is also known as rumanit or Buzău amber. The newspaper reports that specimens from the region can preserve fossil remains such as arachnids, beetles, flies, crustaceans, reptiles, feathers and animal hair. That regional context does not establish that this particular nugget contains those fossils.
EL PAÍS also reports that Buzău amber is associated with more than 160 shades, predominantly dark colors. That figure describes the regional material, not a count of colors verified in this single piece.

What this story does—and does not—say about amber’s value
The nugget’s reported estimate cannot establish a general market price for amber. The reporting supplies no comparable sales, pricing method or basis for calculating a value per kilogram. Its unusual size, authentication, estimated age, provenance and national-treasure classification all distinguish it from an ordinary amber object, but the available account does not assign a separate monetary value to any one feature.
For anyone assessing another amber specimen, the useful questions are whether it has been authenticated, what is documented about its provenance and weight, how its age was estimated, whether fossil inclusions are actually present, and whether it has recognized cultural-heritage status. A large headline figure alone is not an appraisal or a reliable guide to what another piece might sell for.
