A July 2025 U.S. consumer survey found Tesla had the highest share of negative views among 19 electric-vehicle brands: 39%. That is the basis for calling it the “most hated” EV maker—but the survey measured brand views, not hate, and it does not show whether Tesla still ranked last in October 2026.
What the survey found about Tesla
The Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report (EVIR), published in July 2025, reported that 39% of surveyed U.S. consumers held a negative view of Tesla, while 26% held a positive view. Its net positive-view score—the positive share minus the negative share—was -13, the lowest among the 19 brands in the report’s table. The report summarized the trend by saying, “Tesla’s brand reputation slide continues.” Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report
“Most hated” is a headline gloss, not the survey’s measure. EVIR asked about positive and negative views. It also measured trust separately; those results should not be treated as interchangeable with brand perception.
How Tesla compared with other EV brands
The differences are clearest when the same measure is compared across brands. In EVIR’s July 2025 perception table, Tesla’s negative-view share was three times the 13% reported for GMC, Kia, and Ford, and more than six times the 6% recorded for Toyota and Honda.

Trust was a separate, also-negative measure
In EVIR’s trust table, Tesla had 40% total trust and 48% total distrust, with a trust intensity score of -19. The report defines trust intensity as the share who trust a brand “a lot” minus the share who distrust it “a lot.” Total distrust and trust intensity therefore describe different parts of the trust results, and neither is the same as the positive- and negative-view percentages. Views of Tesla had worsened, but the survey did not establish why
Asked about the preceding six months, 37% of respondents said their views of Tesla EVs had become more negative, including 21% who said “much more negative”; 9% said their views had become more positive. These responses document a reported change in sentiment, not its cause. They do not establish that Elon Musk, politics, or any particular event produced the shift. EVIR six-month trend results
What respondents said about the Austin robotaxi demonstration
EVIR reported that 65% had not heard about Tesla’s Austin robotaxi demonstration and 3% had heard “a lot.” It then showed respondents a Wall Street Journal description of the event and asked for their reactions. After reading it, 50% said they were less interested in using a Tesla robotaxi and 8% more interested; 53% said they were less convinced of its safety and 7% more convinced.

EVIR says it surveyed more than 8,000 U.S. consumers and weighted responses by education, race, gender, age, income, geography, and political preference. The report passage does not provide a conventional margin of sampling error or a full sampling-frame description. The sample size and weighting are useful context, but they do not justify assuming a probability sample or claiming a particular level of statistical precision. EVIR survey description
