Yes—one used 2004 Volkswagen Phaeton W12 was listed at $14,587, below Toyota’s current U.S. starting MSRP of $23,125 for a new 2026 Corolla. That is an illustrative asking-price comparison, not proof that Phaetons generally sell for less or cost less to own. The Phaeton listing showed 107,282 miles, and it does not establish the car’s condition or a buyer’s final price after taxes and fees.
How the two prices compare
| Vehicle and price basis | Price | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 Volkswagen Phaeton W12 | $14,587 asking price | One U.S.-dollar listing accessed in 2026; the car had 107,282 miles. The listing page also showed a generated comparison estimate of $13,782–$15,473, not a verified market-wide valuation. CARFAX listing |
| 2026 Toyota Corolla | $23,125 starting MSRP | Toyota’s current U.S. model page lists this starting MSRP for the LE. The SE is listed at $25,565 and the XSE at $28,840; hybrid trims are priced separately. MSRP is before local dealer charges or transaction-specific changes. Toyota 2026 Corolla |
The example Phaeton’s asking price is $8,538 below the Corolla’s starting MSRP. But the comparison puts a used car’s advertised price beside a new car’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price; it does not compare equivalent model years, condition, equipment, warranty, or transaction costs.
Why a flagship can fall below a new compact car’s price
The Phaeton was Volkswagen’s full-size premium saloon, not a direct equivalent to the Corolla. Its W12 is a 6.0-liter engine. Volkswagen’s UK model page lists up to 440 bhp, acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds, and an electronically restricted top speed of 155 mph. Those figures describe the UK page’s model presentation and should not be assumed to apply identically to every year or market. Volkswagen UK Phaeton page
Volkswagen’s retrospective describes the original W12 at 309 kW (420 PS), another indication that output depends on model period and version. The company says Phaeton production ended on 18 March 2016, after 84,235 vehicles had been made. Volkswagen’s UK page says the model is no longer for sale. Volkswagen Newsroom retrospective

Depreciation can make an older luxury flagship look inexpensive to buy. A low asking price alone does not show that it will be inexpensive to run: purchase price and ownership costs are different calculations.
What the price comparison does not tell you about ownership
The listing does not provide enough information to establish the Phaeton’s mechanical condition, service history, or ultimate transaction price. Nor does one listing establish a representative 2026 U.S. price for Phaeton W12s. The comparison therefore cannot support a claim about typical market value or long-term savings.

Fuel use is one important consideration. Volkswagen’s 2010 technical material reports combined consumption of 14.5 L/100 km and emissions of 348 g/km CO₂ for a long-wheelbase W12. These are period manufacturer specifications for that configuration—not a current U.S. EPA estimate or a guarantee of real-world consumption. Volkswagen 2010 technical material
There is no reliable vehicle-specific repair-cost total established for this comparison. The actual financial commitment depends on the particular car and buyer, including condition, records, inspection findings, fuel use, insurance, local taxes, and repair estimates.

What to check before buying a used Phaeton W12
- Review the records. Look for service documentation and evidence of maintenance for the specific vehicle, rather than treating a low asking price as evidence of value.
- Arrange a specialist inspection. Use a shop familiar with the Phaeton and W12 to assess the car before purchase; no inspection provider or service price is established here.
- Price the whole transaction. Confirm taxes, fees, insurance, fuel expectations, and any repair work identified during inspection. Compare those estimates with your budget, not just the listing price.
- Compare the right alternatives. A used, discontinued full-size flagship and a new compact car serve different needs. Decide whether the older car’s size and performance are worth its condition and ownership risks to you.
