MyFitnessPal says Cal AI will remain a standalone product and receive investment in product development and marketing. TechCrunch reported that the deal closed in December 2025 and that Cal AI had been connected to MyFitnessPal’s nutrition database; neither report disclosed the purchase price.
What happened, and when?
MyFitnessPal publicly announced the acquisition on March 2, 2026. TechCrunch reported that the deal closed in December 2025. The announcement describes Cal AI as an AI-powered nutrition app with a distinct, performance-oriented audience.
The acquisition price and other deal terms were not disclosed in the TechCrunch report. The revenue figures reported around the announcement do not establish what MyFitnessPal paid.
What changes for Cal AI users?
MyFitnessPal said Cal AI would continue as a standalone product, with investment in product development and marketing. That is the company’s announced plan, not a guarantee of indefinite availability or a promise about particular future features.

TechCrunch reported that Cal AI had been integrated with MyFitnessPal’s nutrition database by the time of the announcement. That database connection does not, by itself, mean the two apps have merged: MyFitnessPal described Cal AI as remaining standalone.
Why did MyFitnessPal buy Cal AI?
The company framed the apps as complementary options for people with different tracking preferences. Cal AI emphasizes AI-assisted photo logging, while MyFitnessPal is associated with nutrition-database-led tracking. The announcement presents this as a way to serve people with different goals and levels of experience; it is not an independent comparison of the apps’ accuracy or ease of use.

MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher said: “People come to nutrition with different goals and different levels of experience, and they need tools that meet them where they are.” The company’s stated plan to invest in Cal AI’s development and marketing points to continued support for that separate product, but it does not spell out a longer-term roadmap.

The announcement quoted Cal AI CEO and co-founder Zach Yadegari as saying the app generated “over $40 million in sales in the last 12 months.” TechCrunch separately reported annual revenue above $30 million. These are differently worded figures from two sources; they should not be treated as the same measure or combined into a single total.

Yadegari also said: “We built Cal AI in our high school classrooms and grew it to one of the fastest-growing apps in the category, generating over $40 million in sales in the last 12 months. It exceeded all expectations.” TechCrunch reported more than 15 million downloads, a historical figure from its reporting rather than a current download count.
TechCrunch described MyFitnessPal’s database at the time as containing 20 million foods, 68,500 brands, and meals from more than 380 restaurant chains. Those are figures reported in that article, not independent measurements.
