What did Eigen Labs announce?
The company said it raised $100 million from a16z crypto. In its February 22, 2024 announcement, Eigen Labs wrote: “To further empower this mission we are excited to announce that Eigen Labs, the core development team contributing to EigenLayer and EigenDA, has raised $100 million from a16z crypto.”
The announcement does not disclose the financing’s valuation, terms, or a specific use of proceeds. It describes the raise in the context of Eigen Labs’ mission and the infrastructure developers were exploring in the ecosystem; it does not establish that every proposed application was already available.
What are EigenLayer and EigenDA?
EigenLayer is a protocol on Ethereum built around restaking: making staked assets available to help secure services beyond Ethereum’s base network. Eigen Labs is the team developing and contributing to the protocol. EigenDA is a separate data-availability service in the EigenLayer ecosystem, rather than another name for either the company or the protocol.

In an April 9, 2024 mainnet launch account, Eigen Labs described a model in which restakers delegate stake to operators. Operators can opt in to run actively validated services, or AVSs. An AVS is an additional service that uses this arrangement for security. EigenDA was named as an AVS at launch and was described then as being in beta.

These are examples of areas being explored, not a claim that Eigen Labs had launched a product for each one. The April 2024 launch post is a dated account of the protocol at that point, not evidence of current service availability or rules.
Who is Sreeram Kannan?
Sreeram Kannan founded Eigen Labs. The company’s announcement says he previously taught at the University of Washington and led the UW Blockchain Lab. GeekWire’s February 22, 2024 report likewise identified Kannan as the company’s founder and a former UW professor.

What the funding announcement does—and does not—tell readers
The raise signals that a16z crypto backed Eigen Labs’ work on EigenLayer and EigenDA. It does not, by itself, establish the protocol’s current adoption, the risks of using it, or the present terms for operators and AVSs. Those details require current protocol documentation and depend on the service and arrangements involved.
Some protocol details have changed since the launch snapshot. Eigen Labs’ April 2024 post said that launch did not include in-protocol AVS payments or slashing; that statement describes the launch then and should not be treated as a description of current rules. Separately, Eigen Foundation documentation states that EIGEN became transferable on September 30, 2024. Token transferability is distinct from the funding announcement and does not establish current protocol economics or safety.
