Gartner’s 2026 Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services: 7 Providers, Not 20

Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services, published September 1, 2026, names seven providers in its public abstract—not 20. The report evaluates providers using Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision; it is not a universal cloud-quality score or a market-share ranking. Gartner’s full analysis is gated, so the public information does not establish individual vendor placements, scores, strengths, or cautions.

Which cloud providers are in Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant?

Gartner’s September 1, 2026 public abstract names these seven vendors in the Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services:

  • Alibaba Cloud
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Google
  • Huawei Cloud
  • Microsoft
  • Oracle
  • Tencent Cloud

The abstract does not substantiate the “Top 20” wording in the original topic. It identifies seven included vendors, and the public material does not support describing 20 companies as Gartner-evaluated in this report.

What does Gartner’s Magic Quadrant measure?

Gartner describes a Magic Quadrant as a graphical competitive positioning of technology and service providers in a specific market. Its two stated criteria are Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision, as explained in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant methodology summary. These axes frame a market-specific evaluation; they do not amount to a universal quality score, nor do they report market share.

The full Strategic Cloud Platform Services analysis is gated. The public abstract names vendors and points to market themes, but does not provide enough detail to substantiate individual placements, scores, strengths, or cautions. Consult Gartner’s report page for access to the full evaluation.

How to compare providers for your organization

Gartner’s 2026 abstracts point to selection factors including AI capabilities, industry solutions, digital sovereignty, operational efficiency, and hybrid and multicloud needs. Its companion Critical Capabilities abstract says the evaluation considers seven use cases and lists additional comparison dimensions. Use these as prompts for your own requirements—not as evidence that a particular provider leads a category.

Decision area Questions to ask
Workloads and AI/ML Which workloads must run in the cloud, and what AI/ML capabilities or infrastructure do they require?
Architecture Do you need public cloud alone, or distributed-cloud, edge, hybrid, or multicloud architectures?
Sovereignty and industry needs What data-residency, digital-sovereignty, or industry-specific requirements apply?
Security and resilience What security controls, resiliency expectations, and continuity requirements must the platform meet?
Modernization and operations How will the provider support modernization, developer and middleware needs, operations management, and cloud operations?
Sustainability What sustainability considerations should be part of the assessment?

These are Gartner-listed dimensions, not vendor-level scores in the public abstract. A useful procurement comparison maps each requirement to evidence your team can validate for its own workloads, operating model, and constraints.

Why a market-share ranking is not the Magic Quadrant

Gartner’s separate market-share release reports worldwide IaaS public cloud services results for 2024. That analysis found a $171.8 billion market, up 22.5% from 2023, with the top five providers accounting for 82.1% of the market. The reported order and shares were Amazon (37.7%), Microsoft (23.9%), Google (9.0%), Alibaba Group (7.2%), and Huawei (4.1%). Those figures describe market share in one service category and measurement year—not the 2026 Magic Quadrant’s vendor list, placement, product quality, or customer satisfaction. See Gartner’s 2025 market-share release for the underlying figures.

Gartner Principal Analyst Hardeep Singh said, “Cloud providers are investing heavily in AI infrastructure and capabilities to become leaders in the rapidly evolving AI-optimized IaaS market.” That comment provides market context; it does not identify a winner in the Strategic Cloud Platform Services evaluation.
