Pakistan completed repayment of $3.45 billion in deposits to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said. The final $1 billion payment went to the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) on April 23, 2026, following $2.45 billion repaid the previous week.

What Pakistan repaid

The SBP’s announcement, reproduced by Radio Pakistan on April 24, 2026, describes the payments as deposits repaid to the UAE. It says the final $1 billion was paid to ADFD on April 23, after $2.45 billion was repaid the prior week. That brought the total returned to $3.45 billion.

Calling the obligation UAE deposits is more precise than describing it as a conventional project loan: the official notice identifies deposits, not a project-financing arrangement. Secondary reporting has described them as safe deposits held with Pakistan’s central bank, but the transaction announcement itself does not provide further terms.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

The notice confirms the amount, recipient and timing of the repayment. It does not state the repayment’s net effect on Pakistan’s foreign-exchange reserves, explain how the payments were funded, or quantify any resulting change in economic stability. Those outcomes cannot be inferred from the repayment total alone.

How the April Saudi deposits fit into the timeline

A separate April 30, 2026 corporate briefing filed through the Pakistan Stock Exchange reported Saudi deposit inflows of $2 billion with a value date of April 15 and another $1 billion with a value date of April 20. Those dates place the inflows near the UAE repayments, but the briefing does not trace specific Saudi funds to specific UAE payments.

Pakistan’s external public debt in context

The Ministry of Finance’s Debt Policy Statement 2026 reported external public debt of $91.8 billion at the end of June 2025 and $91.4 billion at the end of September 2025. These are dated figures from before the April 2026 repayment; they are not current debt totals and do not measure the repayment’s impact.
