Amazon says engineers reviewed several separate outages affecting its retail website and app during a routine weekly Stores operations meeting—not an emergency meeting about an AWS disruption. The company says only one incident involved AI-assisted tooling, and none involved AI-written code.

What Amazon says the meeting covered

In a March 11, 2026 statement, Amazon said the meeting reviewed several unrelated incidents on its website and app that occurred over the course of one week. Their impact and duration varied. The company described operational incident reviews as a routine part of its weekly Stores operations meetings, where teams discuss root causes to improve customer reliability.

Amazon’s account makes an important distinction: the meeting was a regular operational review, not evidence by itself of an emergency response or a single outage affecting every service.

What was reported before Amazon’s correction

Cybernews reported that Amazon’s weekly “This Week in Stores Tech” meeting would include a deep dive into recent issues. The outlet said a briefing note characterized a trend involving high-blast-radius incidents and GenAI-assisted changes, but did not identify the incidents. That characterization is the report’s account of the note, not a confirmed Amazon finding that AI caused a pattern of outages.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Cybernews also described an outage affecting Amazon’s retail website and shopping app, with checkout failures, app crashes and reports of missing orders before service recovered. Amazon’s public correction did not identify that specific outage or confirm its duration, so those details should be understood as Cybernews’s reporting rather than as part of Amazon’s account of the reviewed incidents.

What Amazon said about AI involvement

Amazon said only one of the incidents discussed involved AI-assisted tooling. According to the company, an engineer followed inaccurate advice inferred by a tool from an outdated internal wiki. Amazon said it addressed the issue and updated internal guidance.

The company also explicitly said none of the incidents involved AI-written code. AI assistance in this account means an engineer acted on bad tool-generated guidance; it is not a claim that an AI system authored the code behind the outages.

These were retail incidents, not AWS incidents

Amazon said the incidents discussed were limited to its retail store infrastructure and did not involve AWS. AWS problems mentioned in other coverage are separate from the retail incidents covered by Amazon’s correction and should not be counted as part of this meeting’s incident review.
