1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Google Pay will not work at a store, first identify where the payment fails: before you tap, when the phone meets the reader, during verification, or after the reader responds. For in-store tap-to-pay, Google Pay runs through Google Wallet on Android. Work through the seven checks below to distinguish a phone setup issue from a card, bank, or merchant problem.
This guide covers contactless payments at physical checkout. A card-add failure, online checkout problem, or Wallet app crash has different causes.
1. Check that your phone has NFC and that it is on
Tap-to-pay requires a phone with NFC hardware. In Android Settings, search for “NFC” and make sure the setting is enabled. On some phones, the path is Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC; labels and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version. If the phone has no NFC hardware, a settings change cannot make it contactless-payment capable.
If Wallet displays “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet,” enable NFC and try again. Google’s contactless troubleshooting is at Fix problems with tap to pay transactions.

2. Make Google Wallet the default contactless payment app
Android needs to route contactless payments to the right app. Open Settings, search for “NFC,” then look for NFC → Contactless payments → Payment default and select Google Wallet. The exact labels can differ by device. Check that Wallet is also up to date; Google provides app requirements in Download the Google Wallet app.
3. Check the card’s status and eligibility
Open Google Wallet and inspect the message shown above the payment card. “Card not set up” means complete the setup steps in Wallet, including any verification requested by the issuer. “Card suspended” is not an NFC setting problem: contact the bank or card issuer for help.

A physical card working for contactless purchases does not guarantee that the card can be added to Google Wallet. Availability depends on the country, issuer, and particular card. If you cannot add the card, or it disappeared, follow Google’s card eligibility and troubleshooting guidance.
4. Use a supported screen lock and verify when asked
Google Wallet requires a screen lock for tap-to-pay. Use a supported Android PIN, pattern, password, fingerprint, or Class 3 face biometric where available. Smart Unlock, Knock to Unlock, and some lower-class biometric methods do not qualify for payment verification.

Unlock the phone before tapping and respond to any verification prompt. If the phone asks for a PIN, enter the Android screen-lock PIN, not the card’s PIN. See Google’s verification requirements.
5. Check whether the phone meets Google’s security requirements
In the Play Store, open your profile → Settings → About and check Play Protect certification. Rooted phones, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, developer versions of Android, and uncertified software may not meet Google’s security requirements for contactless payments. There may be no Wallet toggle that fixes an ineligible software build.

If tap-to-pay stopped after a software update, Google advises contacting the phone manufacturer. Its tap-to-pay troubleshooting page describes device-security issues and other checks.
6. Adjust how you hold the phone to the reader
Hold the phone close to the contactless reader for a few seconds, keeping it still rather than moving it quickly. NFC antenna placement varies: try another part of the phone if the first position does not register. A thick case can interfere with the signal, so test without it.

Look for the contactless symbol or ask the cashier whether that terminal accepts mobile payments. Google’s positioning guidance covers reader interaction.

If your phone shows a check mark but the cashier says the sale did not complete, the phone may have communicated with the reader without the transaction being approved. Confirm that the store accepts mobile payments, try another reader if available, and ask your bank whether it declined the charge.
Some terminals accept contactless payments for certain card networks but require chip or swipe for another. If the terminal asks, use the physical card or another payment method rather than repeatedly tapping. Google’s tap-to-pay guidance explains payment prerequisites and what to do when a transaction is declined.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Where it fails | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Before tapping: Wallet will not open or the card is unavailable | Check the card’s Wallet status and eligibility; if Wallet itself crashes, use the app checks below. |
| At the reader: the phone does not register | Check NFC, the default payment app, and phone positioning; try without a thick case. |
| During verification | Confirm a supported screen lock is set, unlock the phone, and use the Android screen-lock PIN if requested. |
| After the phone responds or shows a check mark | Check terminal acceptance and ask the issuer whether it declined the transaction. |
If Google Wallet crashes or will not load
An app crash is separate from a tap that fails at the reader. Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later, current Google Play Services, and an up-to-date Wallet app; rooted devices and work profiles are not supported. Google’s download and compatibility information lists these requirements. Google’s app-crash guidance also recommends restarting the phone and checking for Android updates.
Do not assume a card or NFC setting will fix an app that cannot load. First confirm the app and phone meet the requirements above; if the app continues to crash, consult Google’s current Wallet help for the specific error.
