Electrum is a free, Bitcoin-only self-custody wallet for people who want control over their keys and are comfortable managing them. It offers desktop and Android versions, recovery from an Electrum seed phrase, multisignature, offline signing, and hardware-wallet support. Those features provide flexibility, not automatic protection: a compromised device, fake installer, or exposed recovery phrase can still put funds at risk.
What is Electrum?
Electrum is a lightweight Bitcoin wallet project created by Thomas Voegtlin in November 2011. Rather than downloading and storing the entire Bitcoin blockchain, it connects to servers that index the chain and uses simplified payment verification (SPV) to check transaction history. That design reduces what the wallet needs to download, while relying on its server-based approach rather than operating a full node. Electrum’s official download page lists desktop software and an Android version.
Electrum is for Bitcoin, not a general-purpose wallet for a broad portfolio of cryptocurrencies or tokens. Its self-custody model also differs from a hosted account: you are responsible for safeguarding the recovery phrase and the devices or signing arrangements used to access funds.
Electrum features and trade-offs
| Feature | What it offers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Seed-phrase recovery | Recover wallet access using a secret phrase. | Electrum uses its own seed version system; do not assume every wallet app can restore an Electrum seed. Follow current Electrum recovery instructions. |
| Offline signing and watching-only wallets | Keep signing keys offline while using a separate wallet to view addresses and prepare transactions. | Setup and transaction handling require care; this workflow is not a guarantee against mistakes or compromised devices. |
| Multisignature | Require multiple signatures to authorize a transaction. | Configuration and recovery are more involved than using a single-key wallet. |
| Two-factor authentication | Electrum offers a two-factor option through Electrum and Trustedcoin. | Review the current setup and terms before relying on it. |
| Hardware-wallet integration | Electrum names Ledger, Trezor, and KeepKey as supported brands. | Brand-level support does not establish compatibility with every device model, firmware, operating system, or Electrum version. |
| Lightning payments | Lightning is covered in Electrum’s documentation. | Confirm the current documentation for implementation details and recovery behavior before using Lightning. |
These are documented capabilities, not proof that a particular wallet setup is safe. More control can mean more responsibility: multisig, cold storage, and signature verification all add steps a user must understand and perform correctly.

How safe is Electrum?
Electrum says, “Your private keys are encrypted and never leave your computer.” That describes its software-wallet approach; it does not mean the keys are protected from a compromised computer. Malware, phishing, a fraudulent installer, an exposed recovery phrase, or an insecure backup can defeat the protections of the wallet.
For stronger separation from a daily-use computer, Electrum documents offline signing and watching-only wallets, and supports hardware-wallet integrations. A hardware wallet can act as a separate signing device, but protection still depends on the setup and on checking transaction details before approving them. Confirm the exact model and software combination before purchase or setup.

Electrum warns users to distrust people claiming to offer private support. Never share a recovery phrase with a person or website claiming to help recover or secure a wallet.
How to download or update Electrum safely
Electrum’s official download page states: “Do not download Electrum from a source other than electrum.org. Verify GPG signatures.” This is the project’s own guidance. A signature can help detect a replaced release file if an attacker cannot produce a valid signature; a hash by itself is not a substitute for signature verification. Electrum also advises checking the signing key’s fingerprint through independent sources or the Web of Trust.

- Start at the official site. Open electrum.org’s download page directly and choose the package for your platform. Avoid search ads, third-party download sites, and lookalike domains.
- Check the listed release. The project release notes list Electrum 4.8.2, dated September 11, 2026, as a security update. Release numbers change, so use the version currently shown on the official download page rather than assuming this one remains current.
- Verify the download. Follow the official instructions to verify the GPG signature and check the signer’s fingerprint through an independent source or the Web of Trust. Do not treat a matching file hash alone as equivalent verification.
- Install only the verified package. Use the official platform-specific instructions and retain your recovery phrase securely. Never enter the phrase into an unexpected website or share it with anyone offering support.
If an update or recovery prompt came from a pop-up, unsolicited message, or unfamiliar website, stop and return to electrum.org yourself. An update cannot make a previously exposed seed safe; if you believe the phrase has been disclosed, seek current guidance from Electrum’s official documentation using a device you trust.
Electrum seed phrases and recovery
Electrum documents its own seed version system, and its wordlist can differ from those used by other wallets while remaining portable within Electrum’s system. Keep the phrase exactly as provided and use Electrum’s current recovery instructions. Do not rely on importing it into an arbitrary wallet as your only backup plan.

A recovery phrase is effectively access to the wallet. Store it somewhere protected from theft, fire, loss, and unauthorized access, and never save or transmit it in a way that exposes it to people or services you do not trust. The phrase cannot protect funds if someone else obtains it.

- Are willing to manage a recovery phrase and take responsibility for device security.
- Value desktop availability, multisig, offline signing, or hardware-wallet integration.
