Redbox’s kiosk rental business shut down during the Chapter 7 liquidation of its parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (CSSE). The company’s bankruptcy began under Chapter 11 on June 29, 2024, and the court converted the cases to Chapter 7 effective July 10. A July 11 report said the kiosk business would shut down, but there is no verified single date when every kiosk stopped working or was removed.

What happened to Redbox?

Redbox operated a nationwide network of machines that rented DVDs and Blu-rays. By 2024, its parent company also described digital rentals and purchases, free on-demand programming, and free ad-supported live TV as part of the business. Those services were described before the bankruptcy; that filing does not establish that they remained available afterward. CSSE’s March 2024 Form 10-Q

CSSE and affiliated debtors filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions on June 29, 2024. On July 10, the court converted the cases to Chapter 7, the liquidation chapter, and a trustee appointment followed on July 11. The Los Angeles Times reported that day that Redbox’s kiosk business would shut down and that CSSE planned to liquidate assets. Bankruptcy court docket Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024

How many Redbox kiosks were there?

The numbers differ because they describe the network at different times. CSSE’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2024, described approximately 27,000 kiosks. The bankruptcy filing and July 2024 reporting put the later U.S. network at about 24,000. Both are approximate, dated counts—not evidence that every machine remained operational. When did the kiosks stop working?

The shutdown announcement and the bankruptcy record establish the end of the business, but not a universal last-transaction date or removal schedule for individual machines. A creditor filing dated October 1, 2024, stated that Redbox was no longer operating in support of a request to reject a distribution agreement. That is a dated statement in a court motion, not proof that every kiosk stopped working on that date. Bankruptcy court docket

The available records also do not establish one final policy for customers’ rentals, accounts, charges, refunds, or customer support. The bankruptcy and shutdown reporting should not be read as a definitive answer about an individual customer’s transaction.

Why did Redbox shut down?

The available accounts point to several pressures rather than one proven cause. CSSE’s Form 10-Q described the Redbox acquisition as involving the assumption of $359.9 million in debt and said the combined company’s ability to service debt and operate depended on factors including a partial recovery in theatrical releases, cost synergies, and financing. The filing is the company’s account of its assumptions, not proof that any one factor alone caused the shutdown.

The Los Angeles Times connected Redbox’s difficulties to changing viewing habits and the shift to streaming and digital video-on-demand, as well as financing pressure, debt, and the supply of new movie releases. The report also discussed pandemic disruption and Hollywood strikes affecting the release slate. Taken together, these factors made a business built around renting physical discs increasingly difficult to sustain. Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024 Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024

The financial strain was substantial. The Los Angeles Times reported a $636.6 million loss in 2023 and $970 million in listed debts, citing company and bankruptcy filings. These are figures reported by the newspaper, not independently recalculated here. Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024

The longer decline in kiosk rentals preceded the bankruptcy. The Times reported that U.S. consumer spending on kiosk rentals was $1.27 billion in 2017, down about one-third from five years earlier, attributing the figure to the Digital Entertainment Group. Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024

What can you use instead of a Redbox kiosk?

The best option depends on whether you want a physical disc or digital access. Redbox’s former business included both physical rentals and digital offerings, but the sources do not establish current catalogs, prices, or geographic availability for any replacement service.

Option Best for What to consider
Play DVDs or Blu-rays you own Watching discs already in your collection You need a compatible DVD or Blu-ray player and a screen. This is a way to play owned discs, not a Redbox replacement.
Rent or buy a disc elsewhere Keeping a physical-media option Check the title’s availability, delivery or pickup options, and total cost before choosing a retailer.
Use a streaming or digital-video service Watching without handling a disc Confirm that the specific title is available in your region and compare the rental or purchase terms. Catalogs and prices vary.

If you want to keep watching physical media, a DVD or Blu-ray player can play discs you own. For any particular movie, compare whether you want to rent or own it, the upfront and per-title costs, internet requirements, and whether the title is available where you live.
