Its launch-era Press cost $699; after a 2017 demonstration showed that the packs could be squeezed by hand, the company cut the price to $399, then suspended sales later that year. Juicero attributed its closure to the difficulty of building the manufacturing and distribution infrastructure needed to serve customers nationwide—not simply to the hand-squeezing controversy.
What Juicero promised
Juicero’s pitch was not just a countertop appliance. The company paired its connected Press with ready-to-juice Produce Packs containing fresh, organic produce. Customers put a pack into the machine, which pressed it into a glass of juice. That proprietary, connected system was the product—and the reason the Press’s price cannot be understood in isolation from its ongoing reliance on the packs.
In its January 17, 2017 announcement, Juicero said the Press price was dropping from $699 to $399. The often-used “$700” description is a rounded version of the launch-era price, not the exact announced figure. Why the hand-squeezing demonstration mattered
In April 2017, a Bloomberg demonstration, as described in CBS San Francisco’s report on Juicero’s shutdown, showed that Produce Packs could be squeezed by hand and yielded nearly the same amount of juice as the Press, sometimes in less time. The report describes that demonstration; it does not establish that every pack or user would get identical results.

The demonstration exposed a straightforward value question: if a customer could get nearly the same result from the pack without the machine, what did paying hundreds of dollars for the Press add? That question struck at the system’s most visible consumer benefit—turning the packs into juice—and made the appliance look difficult to justify on extraction alone.
How Juicero defended the Press
On April 20, 2017, CEO Jeff Dunn argued that the system offered benefits beyond extracting juice. He wrote, “The value of Juicero is more than a glass of cold-pressed juice. Much more.” In his account, the connected Press could remotely disable packs during a recall, apply calibrated pressing, and provide data to help manage a short-lived fresh-produce supply chain. Dunn said raw Produce Packs had a limited lifespan of about eight days.

Dunn also wrote, “The sum of the system — the Press, Produce Packs and App — working together is what enables a great experience.” Those points explain Juicero’s rationale for integrating hardware, packs, and software. They are the CEO’s claims about intended benefits, not independent proof that a dedicated machine was necessary. Jeff Dunn’s April 2017 note
Why Juicero stopped selling its products
On September 1, 2017, Juicero suspended sales of both the Press and Produce Packs, offered refunds, and said it was seeking an acquirer with an existing national fresh-food supply chain. Its shutdown statement, quoted by CBS San Francisco, said: “It became clear that creating an effective manufacturing and distribution system for a nationwide customer base requires infrastructure that we cannot achieve on our own as a standalone business.”

That was the company’s stated operational reason for stopping sales. The hand-squeezing demonstration intensified scrutiny of whether the appliance justified its cost, but the company’s explanation for the shutdown centered on its ability to manufacture and distribute nationally as a standalone business. Juicero is a cautionary example of how an appliance’s value depends on the full system around it. The machine’s purchase price was only one part of the proposition: customers also depended on proprietary packs and the company’s ability to supply them. The controversy sharpened the question of whether the machine added enough value over a simpler way of pressing those packs; the shutdown statement pointed to a separate challenge, the infrastructure needed to keep the nationwide business operating.

Juicero’s Press and packs are defunct, and no current availability of hardware, packs, parts, service, or compatibility is established. Someone considering making juice at home should compare ordinary juicers on purchase price, preparation and cleanup effort, the produce they can handle, and ongoing consumable costs. A conventional juicer is an alternative approach, not a substitute that works with Juicero’s proprietary packs.
