The buyer, identified in a later news report as Gerry Layton, said he planned to eat part of it at a birthday celebration; the report does not confirm that he did.
What sold, and for how much?
Reeman Dansie’s auction record lists the cake as lot 121 in its Royalty, Antiques & Fine Art sale on July 1, 2025, with a recorded sale price of £2,000. The lot description identifies it as a piece of the wedding cake made for Princess Elizabeth and Philip’s wedding on November 20, 1947. Reeman Dansie’s lot record describes the piece as lacking icing.
Who bought it, and did he eat it?
A July 9, 2025 PerthNow report identified the winning bidder as Gerry Layton and said he planned to eat part of the slice at a birthday celebration. The report quoted Layton saying he hoped to flambé some of it in rum. That was a stated intention, not confirmation that he later ate any of it.
PerthNow also attributed to Layton the statement: “It is in good condition having been wrapped and kept in its box for almost 80 years.” This is the buyer’s description, not a formal conservation assessment. The sources do not establish that it was the last surviving piece; Layton’s reported claim that it was “probably the very last piece” remains his view.

What does the auction record say about its provenance?
The lot record says the slice came with its original box, a card and original outer packaging addressed to Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes. These details document the packaging and addressee described by the auctioneer; they do not, by themselves, establish every stage of the cake’s ownership or storage history.
Is a 78-year-old cake safe to eat?
The available reports provide no food-safety assessment. The buyer’s comment about the wrapping and box is not a safety determination, and flambéing should not be treated as proof that a cake this old is safe to eat. The sources do not establish whether the slice was consumed.

The £2,000 figure is the sale price recorded by Reeman Dansie for this particular historical lot. It is not evidence of a general market value for royal memorabilia or wedding-cake fragments: the record concerns one item, with its own described packaging and provenance. The available information does not provide a comparable set of sales from which to infer a broader price trend.
