Ars Technica reported in December 2021 that more than 4,500 of 4,661 plots had been pre-sold for about 13,365 ETH, worth more than $54 million at the crypto prices displayed at the time. Later interviews described some players earning little, but those individual accounts do not establish an overall return or loss for buyers.
What did the $54 million figure represent?
In December 2021, Ars Technica reported that more than 4,500 of Legacy’s 4,661 virtual land plots had been pre-sold for about 13,365 ETH. The outlet valued that amount at more than $54 million using the crypto prices displayed at the time. That is a historical, contemporaneous valuation of the crypto associated with the sale—not an audited figure for cash proceeds, developer revenue after costs, or money ultimately made by players. Ars Technica’s December 2021 report describes the sale and the planned game.
Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective added important qualifications: the estimate included cheaper plots distributed to attendees at Gala’s Galaverse event to prime the market, and some buyers used crypto they already held or had earned. Those details do not provide a separate audited accounting of the sale. They do mean the headline number should not be read as proof that players collectively put $54 million of new cash at risk or later lost that amount. Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective reports these caveats and interviews former participants.
How was Legacy supposed to let players earn?
Legacy was presented as a blockchain business simulation. Players were meant to design products and buildings, have virtual workers manufacture goods, trade those goods, and compete for rewards denominated in LegacyCoin. The land sale tied participation in this planned economy to buying virtual plots.

Landowners were described as able to play directly or lend access to other players in return for a share of their earnings. The premise was therefore not simply that owning a plot would produce a guaranteed return: earning depended on a functioning game economy, player activity, and successful participation in its trading or competition systems. The 2021 sale report describes the proposed model; it does not establish that earnings were guaranteed. Ars Technica, December 2021
What happened after the sale?
Gala announced a launch date of October 26, 2023. In the April 2026 retrospective, players interviewed by Ars described the in-game economy as failing within weeks of launch and reported bugs, weak economic activity, and very limited earnings in their own cases. One interviewee reported earning $9.84 in the game; another said a high-end plot had brought in less than $100. These are individual accounts reported by Ars, not audited player-return figures, an average, or a total for all landowners. Ars Technica, April 2026

Gala’s own dated materials show that the project also had post-launch updates in 2024. In those materials, Gala described Legacy Deeds as NFTs that let owners organize and manage Guilds; other players could join a Guild with Legacy Keys. Gala said buyers who acquired a deed on a secondary market needed to bridge it to GalaChain before configuring a Guild. This documents the stated mechanics in 2024, but does not establish the game’s present operating status, player count, or the current resale value of any deed. Gala Games blog
What do the reported earnings—and the $54 million—tell buyers?
The sale valuation and the interview accounts answer different questions. The former estimates the value of crypto associated with listed plot sales at prices in December 2021; the latter describe a small number of players’ experiences after launch. Neither establishes how much any particular buyer ultimately gained or lost, and neither supplies a verified aggregate return for all participants.

Ars also reported differing accounts of how the sale related to the developer’s finances. Molyneux said proceeds helped fund his studio’s later game, Masters of Albion. Former Gala executive Jason Brink told Ars that Gala paid 22cans a minimum guarantee and that the NFT sales went toward that guarantee. These are attributed statements, not an audited reconciliation of the $54 million estimate or a finding about net proceeds. Ars quoted Brink saying, “Legacy was paid for upfront, man,” and quoted Molyneux, in a 2024 interview, saying he was susceptible to the idea that play-to-earn gaming could become a big thing. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Legacy still operating, and can its plots still be sold?
The available dated accounts do not confirm whether Legacy is operational today. Reports of collapsing interest or a failing economy are not the same as confirmation that a game has shut down. The 2024 Gala materials establish that deeds and Guild mechanics were being discussed then, not their current availability. No present-day access, support, token-value, or secondary-market price should be inferred from the historical sale figure or those older updates.

For a personal-finance decision, the practical distinction is between a past headline valuation and a realizable return. A virtual plot’s original sale price or historical crypto valuation does not establish what it can now be sold for, whether a buyer can use it, or whether the game’s earning mechanics remain active. The cited reporting does not provide an audited aggregate player-loss total, a regulator finding about the proceeds, or an independent player-count dataset.
