Air Transat is not currently facing the pilot strike described in this 2025 headline. The airline announced a possible shutdown after pilots issued a 72-hour strike notice in December 2025, but a tentative agreement was reached on December 9. Air Transat now says pilots ratified the agreement, which runs until April 2030. The planned strike did not occur.
What happened with Air Transat pilots?
The dispute moved through several distinct stages. A strike-authorization vote gave union leaders authority to call a strike; it was not itself a strike notice or a decision to stop work.
- November 2025: negotiations and strike planning. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said negotiations had begun in January and that talks had not produced an agreement. It said its priorities included pay and working conditions, benefits, job security and quality of life. In November, union leaders said they would seek strike authorization. - December 3: pilots authorize a possible strike. ALPA reported that 99% of participating eligible pilots voted in favor of strike authorization, with 98% participation. The union said explicitly that the result was not an immediate strike notice. ALPA’s vote announcement.
- December 7: Air Transat announces a planned shutdown. The airline said it had received a 72-hour strike notice from ALPA, which it said represented 700 pilots. It announced that cancellations would begin progressively on December 8, with a complete suspension planned by December 9 if a strike occurred. - December 9: tentative agreement reached. Transat announced a tentative agreement and said operations were returning to normal. Union ratification was still required at that point. Transat’s agreement announcement.
- After the announcement: agreement ratified. Air Transat’s current strike information page says pilots approved the agreement, which runs until April 2030, and that the strike risk has been eliminated.
Could an Air Transat strike cancel your flight now?
The 2025 shutdown plan is historical, not a current warning. The airline’s page says the pilots’ agreement is in effect until April 2030, and the planned December 2025 strike was averted. That does not guarantee that any particular flight will operate: schedules can change for other reasons. Check your flight’s live status on Air Transat’s website or app and review current airline notices before leaving for the airport.
What could passengers do during the 2025 notice period?
Air Transat said customers scheduled to travel within the following five days could change or postpone their trip at no additional cost, and advised them to check flight status before going to the airport. That was a temporary policy tied to the December 2025 notice period—not a standing policy or a benefit passengers can assume applies to a future disruption. Why did the union and airline disagree?
ALPA said pilots sought improvements to compensation, benefits, job security, working conditions and quality of life, and described negotiations as slow. Air Transat disputed the union’s account of the talks. In its December 7 statement, the airline said it had proposed a 59% salary increase over five years, alongside working-condition improvements. That percentage is the airline’s description of its offer, not an independently established measure of the final contract outcome.
The official statements do not provide matching compensation terms that allow an apples-to-apples comparison of the parties’ positions. Their descriptions of bargaining and the offer should therefore be read as attributed claims, not as a neutral finding about which side’s account was correct.
