No. Regeneron’s $256 million offer was selected in the first round of 23andMe’s bankruptcy auction, but it was superseded. TTAM Research Institute won the final bidding round with a $305 million offer, received court approval, and completed the acquisition on July 14, 2025. Regeneron did not buy 23andMe or become the owner of its customer data.

Did Regeneron buy 23andMe?

No. 23andMe and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 23, 2025. Regeneron was initially selected as the successful bidder for substantially all of 23andMe’s assets, excluding Lemonaid Health, after an auction concluded on May 16. The agreement and public announcements followed in May. Regeneron later became the backup bidder, but did not complete the purchase. The company’s SEC-filed sale disclosure records the bidding and sale timeline.

After another bidding round, 23andMe announced TTAM Research Institute as the winning bidder on June 13, 2025. The bankruptcy court approved the transaction on June 27, and the sale closed July 14. Regeneron’s original announcement was later updated to acknowledge that the sale went to TTAM.

How the $256 million bid compares with the completed sale

Transaction detail Regeneron proposal TTAM transaction
Bid and stage $256 million; initial winning bid selected after the May auction, announced by Regeneron in 2025. $305 million; final winning bid announced by 23andMe in June 2025.
Buyer status Selected initially, then became backup bidder; did not close. Selected as final winning bidder; completed the acquisition July 14, 2025.
Assets described Substantially all assets, including Personal Genome Service, Total Health and Research Services, and Biobank; excluded Lemonaid Health. Substantially all assets and ongoing operations, including Personal Genome Service, Research Services, and Lemonaid Health.
Privacy commitments announced Regeneron said it would follow then-current privacy policies, applicable law, and existing customer consents if its proposed transaction closed. TTAM described commitments including honoring account and genetic-data deletion and research opt-out policies, advance notice to customers, and other safeguards.
Approval and closing Not the completed transaction. Sale order entered June 27, 2025; transaction closed July 14, 2025.

The SEC-filed disclosure lists Regeneron at $151 million as the backup bidder in the final round. That figure is separate from Regeneron’s earlier $256 million initial winning bid; it is not the price at which the initial agreement was made.

Who owns 23andMe now?

TTAM Research Institute acquired the assets in the bankruptcy sale, which closed July 14, 2025. The sale covered substantially all of 23andMe’s assets and ongoing business operations, including Personal Genome Service, Research Services, and Lemonaid Health. This was broader than Regeneron’s proposed purchase, which excluded Lemonaid Health.

What happened to my 23andMe data?

The sale did not mean that Regeneron acquired 23andMe’s database: Regeneron’s proposal did not close. In its proposed-deal materials, Regeneron said it would process customer personal data consistently with existing consents, privacy statements, terms, notices, and applicable law, and said it intended to maintain consumer genome services. Those were statements about a transaction that did not happen.

TTAM’s announcement for the completed transaction described its own commitments. These included honoring existing account and genetic-data deletion and research opt-out policies; notifying customers before closing; limiting certain subsequent data transfers; creating a Consumer Privacy Advisory Board; and implementing privacy procedures and reporting. TTAM also announced two years of free Experian identity theft monitoring. These are commitments described in the transaction announcement, not proof that every protection resolves every legal question or that a particular service remains available on the same terms today.

Regeneron’s FAQ for its proposed deal said: “Regeneron will not use any personal data in a manner inconsistent with the purposes for which it was shared with 23andMe, and customers can update their consents or delete their data at any time.” That assurance was made by the proposed buyer and does not describe the eventual owner.

Can I delete my 23andMe data or opt out of research?

The currently accessible U.S. privacy notice describes how account holders can request a copy of personal information, correct information, or request deletion through account settings. It also gives a way to submit requests for people without an account. The current research consent document says research participation can be withdrawn through account settings.
