Breega’s Africa Seed I had secured commitments for about 70% of its $75 million target at its first close in June 2024—not the full target. The fund was presented as a source of pre-seed and seed capital for African startups, with planned checks of $100,000 to $2 million. Later African Development Bank Group disclosures describe the fund in euros and announce a separate institutional investment approval; neither source establishes a final close.
What Breega announced at the first close
Paris-based venture capital firm Breega reported the first close of Africa Seed I on June 20, 2024. TechCrunch said the fund had a $75 million target and commitments for around 70% of that target at the time. A first close indicates that fundraising has reached an initial milestone; it does not mean the entire target has been raised. TechCrunch’s June 2024 report is the source for those dollar figures.
The announced plan was to invest in early-stage African companies, with ticket sizes from $100,000 to $2 million. Fund leader Melvyn Lubega told TechCrunch that Breega wanted to be a first check and lead pre-seed and seed rounds. These are reported investment plans, not a guarantee that every company or round will fit those parameters.
What the fund is targeting
Markets and local presence
At launch, Breega identified Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, and Francophone Africa as target markets. The 2024 report also named Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Breega said it was opening offices in Lagos and Cape Town, alongside its existing European locations. TechCrunch’s report describes this launch-era strategy.
#1 Best Overall
A later African Development Bank Group project summary dated April 18, 2026 identifies Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and French-speaking Africa as core markets. It says up to 40% of portfolio companies may be sourced outside the Big Four ecosystems, including less developed venture markets. That is a sourcing allowance in the AfDB’s project description, not a claim that 40% of investments have already been made there. Read the AfDB project summary.
Sectors and portfolio support
The 2024 TechCrunch account named fintech, health technology, proptech, logistics, and edtech among sectors discussed by Breega’s partners. The AfDB’s 2026 project summary lists fintech and insurtech, agritech, healthtech, logistics, diversity and inclusion, edtech, and climate technology. These are descriptions from different dates and sources; they should not be treated as an identical or exhaustive sector list.
Breega described its approach as founders-for-founders, with operational help in areas such as go-to-market strategy, talent, governance, brand, and communications. The 2024 report named Melvyn Lubega, a Go1 co-founder, and Tosin Faniro-Dada, formerly CEO of Endeavor Nigeria, as leaders of the Africa fund.
How the 2024 and 2026 funding figures fit together
The later AfDB disclosures add information, but use different currencies and describe different things. The sources do not explain the relationship between the $75 million 2024 target and the €40 million fund description published in 2026, so the figures should not be treated as a direct conversion or confirmation of a final fund size.
