Later private-market listings also show a $1 billion valuation figure, though they are separate provider data—not proof of the exact transaction described in the report.
What was reported about ModRetro’s $1 billion valuation?
On March 8, 2026, TechCrunch reported, citing the Financial Times, that ModRetro was in talks to raise funding at a $1 billion valuation. That is a reported fundraising discussion, not a company-confirmed quote or evidence by itself that a financing round closed on those terms.
Two later data points provide additional context, but should be kept distinct from the March report:
- Forge Global lists financing tranches dated March 6, 2026, and a $1 billion post-money valuation.
- Private Market View describes a $1 billion valuation mark as of September 2026, based on an early-stage round, and says there were no later trades.
These are secondary-provider figures with their own definitions and methodologies. They do not establish that the reported fundraising talks resulted in a specific completed transaction on the terms described by TechCrunch.

What does the valuation figure tell investors—and what does it not?
A $1 billion valuation is a figure assigned to a company in a financing or private-market context; it is not the amount ModRetro raised, nor a measure of revenue, sales, or profit. The cited coverage and valuation listings do not establish ModRetro’s revenue, unit shipments, or market share. Without those operating measures, the valuation alone cannot show how much demand exists for the company’s products or whether its business is growing.

How has the M64’s status changed since the March report?
The March coverage described the M64 as upcoming. ModRetro CEO Torin Herndon wrote in a company update on April 23, 2026: “We are ready to give the full picture of status and ship timelines for the M64 console, controller, and games.” That update said they were expected to ship at July’s end. The current M64 product page lists the console for sale, so the earlier future-tense description is no longer a current status report. Prices and inventory may change.
