Pakistan’s total liquid reserves were higher—$21.408 billion—because that figure also includes $5.195 billion held by commercial banks. The $16 million rise is not a current reserve update, and the same weekly increase was reported for a different week in January.
What the February 20, 2026 figures show
In its report on the SBP’s weekly reserve data, ProPakistani said SBP-held reserves rose by $16 million during the week ended February 20, 2026, reaching $16.213 billion. The News International separately reported the same week’s SBP balance as $16.2 billion, a rounded figure. ProPakistani’s February 26 report gives the breakdown; The News International’s report confirms the week-ending date and rounded balance.

Why SBP reserves differ from Pakistan’s total reserves
“SBP reserves” refers to foreign-exchange reserves held by the central bank. The weekly “total liquid reserves” figure adds commercial banks’ holdings to the SBP component. For the February 20 observation, $16.213 billion at the SBP plus $5.195 billion at commercial banks equalled $21.408 billion in total. These are related measures, but they are not interchangeable.
The $16 million increase also occurred in January
The amount alone does not identify the reporting week. ProPakistani reported another $16 million increase in SBP-held reserves for the week ended January 9, 2026, when the balance reached $16.072 billion. That is a separate observation from February’s $16.213 billion ending balance. The January report provides that earlier figure.

A later 2026 update showed a different movement in total reserves
For the week ended September 25, 2026, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that SBP-held reserves rose by $39 million to $21.4392 billion. Commercial-bank reserves fell by $78.6 million to $5.3317 billion, leaving total liquid reserves at $26.7709 billion, down from $26.8106 billion one week earlier. Thus, the SBP component increased while the combined total declined. These September figures are a later, distinct weekly observation—not a revision of the February report. APP’s September report gives the amounts.
What the weekly change does—and does not—tell you
The February report establishes the reported change and ending balances, but it does not identify a specific transaction as the cause of the $16 million rise. The weekly movement by itself also does not establish a lasting improvement in external solvency, import capacity or currency strength. The cited February coverage does not provide an import-cover figure for that observation.

Use the week-ending date, not just the release date
The SBP’s data calendar says weekly liquid foreign-exchange reserve figures are released on Thursday for the position on the previous Friday. A report’s publication date is therefore not the date the reserve balance measures. When comparing figures, identify the week ended, whether the amount refers to the SBP or all liquid reserves, and whether it is a balance or a week-on-week change.
