At World Pork Expo on June 4–5, 2025, pork producers and industry representatives described how policy uncertainty can reach farm budgets and operating decisions—from export exposure and labor to disease preparedness and financing. Their comments offer a dated snapshot, not a statement of what trade, policy, or pork economics look like today.

What World Pork Expo 2025 covered

The event took place in Des Moines on June 4–5, 2025. World Pork Expo reported more than 10,000 attendees from 32 countries, 700 booths, and more than 300,000 square feet of exhibit space. It also said more than 5,000 free pork lunches were served across the two days. These are figures from the event’s official recap published June 12, 2025.

The Expo program mixed industry networking with seminars on economics, pork cutout pricing, animal welfare, swine health, global markets, consumer marketing, and feed biosecurity. The official seminar preview described a session on contaminated feed as a possible disease pathway and feed sanitation as a prevention measure; that description is a summary of the session, not independent evidence for any particular product.

Why policy uncertainty matters at the farm level

An Agri-Pulse Newsmakers interview transcript, updated June 10, 2025, connected national policy discussions to operational and financial choices. Interviewees included National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) CEO Bryan Humphreys, Cooper Farms sow division manager Kevin Stuckey, Farm Credit Services of America corporate swine lender Chris Ford, and Oklahoma Pork Council executive director Kylee Deniz. The transcript is marked unedited, and its forecasts and assessments should be read as comments made at that time.

The issues they discussed included reconciliation and Farm Bill priorities, foreign animal disease preparedness, export-market development, Proposition 12, tariffs, labor availability, herd health, production costs, capital investment, and managing financial risk. These are the perspectives of the interview participants, not survey results or a comprehensive measure of producer opinion.

Policy advocacy spans several levels

At a June 4 policy panel, NPPC described its advocacy as work across state, federal, international, and corporate venues. The organization presented its own priorities and account of progress in a June 4, 2025, panel recap.

Federal priorities and Proposition 12

Humphreys said the House reconciliation bill being discussed in the June interview included foreign-animal-disease preparation, foreign-market-development funding, and tax provisions affecting agriculture. He said Proposition 12 still needed a legislative response, possibly through a Farm Bill or another vehicle. Those were his descriptions and expectations in June 2025; they do not establish what legislation ultimately passed or what the law’s status is now.

NPPC characterized the rules associated with Proposition 12 as a “patchwork” and said addressing their effects was a priority. That is the council’s advocacy position, rather than a neutral summary of all stakeholders’ views.

International access and corporate-level issues

NPPC said it wanted to open pork market access to Vietnam and participate in international standards organizations. It also cited USDA action concerning permanent higher processing-line speeds and renewed registrations for more than 300 U.S. pork facilities eligible to export to China. Those progress descriptions are NPPC’s account; the panel recap does not independently establish the status or outcome of each item.

NPPC president and Ohio pork producer Duane Stateler described the organization’s goal as “ensuring economic certainty and long-term sustainability for pork producers.” Humphreys cautioned that advocacy can take time, saying, “Wins take time, and there is a lot of important work that happens behind the scenes.”

Trade exposure and farm economics

Interviewees described tariffs and changing trade expectations as a source of uncertainty for business planning. Stuckey said exports mattered to Cooper Farms and stated that 28% of what the company produced was exported. That is a company-specific figure he gave in the interview, not a statistic for the U.S. pork industry.

Ford said the first half of 2025 had been strong for producer returns and that lower corn and soybean meal costs had improved the outlook. Those were his assessments as a swine lender at the time, not independently established figures for the industry’s profitability. He encouraged producers to review their financials and cost of production regularly, and discussed insurance or the board of trade as possible risk-management tools.

Labor, herd health, and operational resilience

Labor and day-to-day operations

Stuckey said labor availability affected his operation and discussed an earlier disruption involving TN visa workers. His comments describe Cooper Farms’ concerns, not a complete account of labor conditions across the sector.

Disease preparedness and biosecurity

Stuckey named PRRS and PED among the herd-health concerns producers face and urged preparation for African swine fever, including learning from poultry-sector responses. Ford discussed the use of biosecurity technology and choices such as upgrading, closing, or relocating sites to improve biosecurity. He also described PRRS as a significant production concern. His comments about losses in affected sow units are interview claims and should not be treated as a general industry estimate.

Stuckey also discussed a PRRS-resistant pig, calling it “not a game changer” but “a life changer.” He cautioned that the supply of the genetics and producers’ acceptance of them mattered. The comment reflects his view of the potential, not evidence that the technology is broadly available or adopted.

State advocacy and the role of producer finances

Deniz described state associations as important for policy decisions closest to farms, including animal-housing criticism and coalition-building in Oklahoma. NPPC’s panel likewise emphasized state associations’ role in grassroots advocacy. These are association perspectives; the cited accounts do not present a full explanation of opposing stakeholders’ arguments. Deniz said, “So much focus goes to Washington, but major decisions often start in state legislatures.”

For financial resilience, Ford’s advice was to begin with accurate financial records and a clear view of the business: “It starts with a good set of financials, and just understanding where you stand.” In the interview, he connected that foundation with knowing production costs and reviewing risk-management options. It was advice from a lender in June 2025, not a guarantee against price, policy, or disease shocks.
