The statement came amid complaints about support for the Horizon accounting system; it was an offer to talk, not evidence that every subpostmaster was contacted or that the arrangement continues today.
What did the Post Office CEO say?
Computer Weekly reported on 3 February 2015 that Vennells made the statement while answering questions from the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee. As quoted in the report, she said: “The Post Office CIO is prepared to talk to any subpostmaster she can.” The CIO was not named in the article.
The wording described willingness to talk to subpostmasters the CIO could reach. It did not set a response time or process, guarantee that every request would result in a conversation, or establish that the offer was carried out. The report is a historical account of a statement made during the inquiry, not evidence of current Post Office policy.
Why was Horizon support raised at the inquiry?
The 2015 Computer Weekly report placed Vennells’s remark amid concerns about training and technical support for subpostmasters using Horizon. It said MPs heard that training lasted a couple of days while the user guide ran to more than 500 pages, that there was no regional helpdesk, and that technical support was offshored to the Philippines. These are descriptions reported from the inquiry at the time, not current service details or independently established findings in this article.

The report said Horizon was used in thousands of Post Offices and that 150 subpostmasters had made claims at that time. Both figures belong to the report’s 2015 account; they should not be read as present-day counts.
What other disagreements did the report describe?
Computer Weekly reported that Ian Henderson of Second Sight criticised the Post Office’s approach, alleging that requested information, including prosecution files, had not been delivered 18 months after the request. The article also described a disagreement over the investigation: campaigner Alan Bates wanted the government to take it over, while National Federation of Subpostmasters general secretary George Thomson opposed that idea. These were attributed positions and allegations reported during the inquiry, not settled findings.

What the 2015 statement does—and does not—establish
- It establishes what Vennells was reported to have said during a parliamentary inquiry in February 2015.
- It records an offer of access to the CIO for subpostmasters with IT problems, against a backdrop of reported concerns about Horizon training and support.
- It does not establish whether the CIO subsequently spoke with subpostmasters under the offer or whether a similar arrangement exists now.
