Cheapest new iPhone: the iPhone 17e from $599. If you already have an eligible trade-in or are willing to switch carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon can reduce the device cost to $0 after monthly bill credits—but those offers require a qualifying plan and usually a 24- or 36-month commitment.
This U.S. price roundup was checked on August 10, 2026. The important comparison is not just the phone payment: calculate the phone price, required wireless service, trade-in, taxes, activation fees, credit period, and the cost of leaving early. A free phone can be a good deal if you already want the required plan; it can be an expensive deal if the phone is the only reason you sign up.
Best iPhone deals at a glance
Apple’s direct prices are the cleanest benchmark because they show what the phone costs without tying the purchase to a carrier’s bill-credit program. Carrier offers can beat those prices, but only after you account for service and eligibility.
| Phone | Best observed device price | Where | Required commitment | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | From $599 | Apple | None for the direct purchase; confirm the checkout configuration | Lowest-priced new iPhone |
| iPhone 16 | $699 with carrier activation; $729 connecting later | Apple | Apple’s $30 connectivity discount requires select-carrier activation | Lower-cost mainstream iPhone |
| iPhone 17 | $799 with carrier activation; $829 connecting later | Apple | No carrier bill-credit commitment at the $829 direct price | Best unlocked current model |
| iPhone Air | From $999 for 256GB | Apple | None for the direct purchase | Thin design and a larger display |
| iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max | From $1,099 | Apple | None for the direct purchase | Premium hardware, especially with a carrier trade-in promotion |
| iPhone 17 after carrier credits | As low as $0 per month | Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile | New line, port-in or trade-in, qualifying plan, and 24 or 36 months of credits | Switchers or customers already paying for the required plan |
First, separate the phone price from the wireless-service price
Apple’s displayed prices for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 include a carrier-activation discount on selected configurations:
- iPhone 17: $799 with select-carrier activation, or $829 when you choose to connect to a carrier later.
- iPhone 16: $699 with select-carrier activation, or $729 when you connect later.
- iPhone Air: $999 for the 256GB model.
Apple says the connectivity discount is available when you activate with a select carrier during purchase. It does not apply when you choose connect to a carrier later or use a prepaid plan. See the current Apple iPhone shopping page and the individual iPhone 17 pricing page before ordering.
Carrier promotions work differently. The carrier generally finances the phone at its full retail price, then applies a promotional credit to each monthly bill. Those credits can continue for 24 or 36 months only while you satisfy the offer’s conditions. Cancel the line, change to an ineligible plan, or in some cases pay off the phone early, and the remaining credits may disappear.
Best unlocked iPhone deals
1. iPhone 17: $829 from Apple
The iPhone 17 for $829 is the best straightforward unlocked purchase for most buyers who want a current model without a carrier commitment. It starts with 256GB of storage and includes ProMotion, making the $100 premium over the iPhone 16’s unlocked $729 starting price easier to justify for buyers who plan to keep the phone for several years. Verizon lists the iPhone 17 with a 6.3-inch display and up to 30 hours of video playback.

The trade-off is that you pay the phone cost yourself rather than receiving a carrier’s promotional credits.
Apple also advertises up to $695 in Apple Trade In credit toward eligible iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro purchases. The actual amount depends on the phone you trade in and its condition. Apple Card Monthly Installments can spread the purchase over 24 months at 0% APR for eligible customers, but installment financing is not the same as a carrier bill-credit promotion.
2. iPhone 16: $729 unlocked or $699 with activation
The iPhone 16 remains the value choice if you want to spend less upfront. Apple’s current price is $699 with carrier activation or $729 when connecting later. It has Apple Intelligence support, Camera Control, and A18 hardware, so it is not simply an obsolete budget alternative.
Choose the iPhone 16 when the $100 savings matters more than newer hardware and the iPhone 17’s 256GB starting capacity. Choose the iPhone 17 when you value the newer generation, ProMotion, or additional long-term headroom. Also compare storage: a cheaper phone with insufficient storage can be worse value than a more expensive phone you can keep longer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. iPhone 17e: from $599
Apple’s iPhone 17e is the cheapest new iPhone in the current Apple lineup, starting at $599. It is the right starting point for buyers who want a new iPhone and do not need the features or higher tier of the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17.
Do not automatically call it the best value. The iPhone 16 costs $100 more at Apple’s starting price and the iPhone 17 costs $200 more than the 17e with carrier activation. Compare the exact storage, camera, display, connectivity, and other features in Apple’s checkout before deciding whether the savings justify the lower tier.
4. iPhone Air: $999 for a 256GB model
The iPhone Air is a design-and-display purchase rather than the default value winner. It starts at $999 for 256GB and has a 6.5-inch display. Verizon lists up to 27 hours of video playback, compared with up to 30 hours for the iPhone 17.
Buy the Air if its thin design and larger screen are the reason you want it. At full price, the iPhone 17 is $170 less when bought unlocked and offers longer stated video playback. A carrier promotion can change the calculation: T-Mobile and Verizon have advertised large no-trade-in discounts on qualifying new lines, potentially bringing the Air’s device cost close to that of an iPhone 17. The plan requirement remains the deciding factor.
5. iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: from $1,099 before promotions
Apple’s current shopping page lists the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max from $1,099. Paying Apple’s full price is the cleanest option if you need an unlocked phone and want to avoid a carrier commitment. The major carriers may be more attractive if you have an eligible trade-in, especially for a Pro model whose retail price is high.

AT&T currently advertises an iPhone 17 Pro for $0 per month after eligible trade-in credits on a qualifying unlimited plan. The offer page describes an eligible trade-in as an iPhone 13 or newer, excluding the iPhone 13 mini, and says the current promotion accepts any condition. Read the exact offer terms before relying on that description.
Best carrier iPhone promotions
There is no universal best carrier. The winner depends on whether you are an existing customer, a switcher, or someone who already considers the required premium plan worthwhile.
AT&T: strongest trade-in route for an iPhone 17 or 17 Pro
AT&T’s iPhone 17 offer shows a $829.99 retail price and as little as $0 per month after up to $830 in credits over 36 months. The displayed offer requires:
- An eligible trade-in with a qualifying value of at least $130 for the shown promotion.
- A qualifying unlimited plan.
- A 36-month installment agreement.
- Taxes charged on the full device price at the time of sale.
This can be one of the best device-only deals for an existing AT&T customer or a switcher who already wants the required unlimited plan. It is not a $0 monthly wireless plan. If your cheaper current plan would cost substantially less than the qualifying AT&T plan, include that difference for all 36 months.
For high-end buyers, AT&T’s free-phone listings currently advertise the iPhone 17 Pro at $0 per month with an eligible trade-in and qualifying unlimited service. Promotional credits generally take 36 months, so leaving early can leave you responsible for the remaining device balance.
AT&T’s other displayed prices are more volatile:
- iPhone Air: recent AT&T page snapshots showed as low as $8.34 per month with an eligible trade-in. Another page showed $9.99 per month with a new line, qualifying unlimited service, and an additional $5.56 monthly credit.
- iPhone 16: listings showed $20.28 per month before credits and as low as $7.99 per month with a new line and qualifying unlimited service.
- iPhone 17e: the recent official listing showed $16.67 per month before credits and $5.99 per month with a new line and eligible unlimited service, including an additional $5.56 monthly credit over 36 months.
Because AT&T’s displayed amounts can vary by promotion, account, line status, and session, treat these as “as low as” figures and confirm the amount at checkout. Some coverage has reported the 17e at $0.43 per month, but AT&T’s more recent official listing showed $5.99. Do not rely on the lower figure unless it appears in your own order summary.
T-Mobile: best high-end switcher promotion
T-Mobile is particularly compelling for people switching from another carrier. Current iPhone 17 offer pages show the phone on us with a new line and number port-in on an Experience More or Experience Beyond plan. The displayed offer does not require a trade-in and returns up to $830 through 24 monthly bill credits.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Expect sales tax on the pre-credit price and a $35 device connection charge at purchase. The line must remain active and eligible. T-Mobile’s offer terms state that credits can stop if you cancel the account or pay off the device early.
T-Mobile’s Apple deals page also advertises up to $1,100 off an iPhone Air or Pro model with a new line, a port-in, and a qualifying Experience plan. The terms describe a plan requirement of approximately $100 or more per month with AutoPay; Better Value eligibility uses a different multi-line requirement. Some 55+, military, and first-responder variants advertise up to $900 without a trade-in.
Best use case: you are already switching and would choose T-Mobile’s qualifying plan even without the phone promotion. Poor use case: you are selecting a substantially more expensive plan solely to obtain a phone that appears free.
Verizon: clearest no-trade-in iPhone 17 route
Verizon’s iPhone 17 product page shows $0 per month for 36 months on a qualifying new-line promotion. The full retail price is $829.99. The displayed offer requires a new line on an eligible Unlimited Ultimate or Unlimited Plus phone plan, and credits stop if the line is canceled or moved to an ineligible plan.
Recommended Free Tools
Verizon lists a $40 activation fee, although the displayed online new-line offer includes an activation-fee waiver or credit. Check the final order summary because fees and waivers can vary by channel and promotion.
This is one of the clearest ways to get an iPhone 17 without a trade-in, but it is not necessarily the cheapest total-cost option. A new line and qualifying plan must remain in place for the full 36-month credit period.

For the iPhone Air, Verizon’s product page lists the phone from $27.77 per month before promotional credits, while Apple’s checkout page advertises up to $1,000 from Verizon without a trade-in under eligible carrier activation. For the iPhone 16, Verizon’s prepaid listing shows the 128GB model at $729.99 before taxes and fees. Do not assume a prepaid or carrier-sold phone is unlocked; verify the lock policy for that specific listing.
Best iPhone 17 deals by buying situation
| Your situation | Most sensible route | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Want an unlocked phone | Apple’s $829 iPhone 17 | 256GB starting storage and no 24- or 36-month bill-credit commitment | Paying more upfront than a successful carrier promotion |

Best iPhone Air deals
The iPhone Air starts at $999, so its full-price value depends almost entirely on whether you specifically want its thin design and 6.5-inch display. At Apple, it is $170 more than an unlocked iPhone 17. Its stated battery rating is also lower: up to 27 hours of video playback versus up to 30 hours for the iPhone 17, according to Verizon’s product information.
Carrier promotions can make the Air more interesting:
- AT&T: recent listings showed as low as $8.34 per month with an eligible trade-in, while another page displayed $9.99 per month with a new line and qualifying unlimited service.
- T-Mobile: up to $1,100 off with a new line, port-in, and qualifying Experience plan; the credits are spread over 24 months.
- Verizon: Apple’s checkout page advertises up to $1,000 off without a trade-in under eligible activation, while Verizon lists the device from $27.77 per month before credits.
Buy the Air when the design is worth paying for or when a carrier offer brings the device cost close to the iPhone 17 without forcing service you would not otherwise choose. At full price, it is not the best general-value iPhone.
Best iPhone 16 deals
The iPhone 16 starts at $699 with carrier activation or $729 when connecting later through Apple. It is the practical value choice for buyers who want Apple’s current mainstream experience at a lower price than the iPhone 17.
AT&T listings have shown the iPhone 16 at $20.28 per month before credits and as low as $7.99 per month with a new line and qualifying unlimited service. T-Mobile and Verizon can also show substantial carrier-connected discounts, but the exact amount depends on plan, line type, and promotion.

For a lower-commitment purchase, recent retailer snapshots showed:
- Best Buy new unlocked iPhone 16, 128GB: approximately $679.95.
- Best Buy refurbished excellent iPhone 16, 128GB: approximately $595 to $625, depending on listing and color.
- Walmart restored unlocked iPhone 16, 128GB: approximately $547.99 in a listing sold by a third-party seller and fulfilled by Walmart.
- Verizon prepaid iPhone 16, 128GB: $729.99 before taxes and fees.
These are inventory snapshots, not guaranteed permanent prices. Check whether the phone is truly unlocked, who the seller is, the battery-health policy, the return window, and the warranty before choosing a retailer listing.
Walmart and Best Buy: useful prices, but read the fine print
Retailer wireless listings can look cheaper because they combine a down payment, monthly financing, carrier credits, or gift-card incentives. For example, a recent Walmart wireless savings event showed:
- T-Mobile iPhone 17 256GB from $8 per month plus $587 down over 24 months.
- AT&T and Verizon iPhone 17 256GB from $21.64 per month over 36 months.
- T-Mobile iPhone Air 256GB from $9.25 per month plus $677 down over 24 months.
- Verizon iPhone Air 256GB from $24.98 per month over 36 months.
The T-Mobile iPhone 17 example is not an $8 phone: $8 multiplied by 24 months plus the $587 down payment equals $779 before taxes, service, and other charges. The Air example totals $899 before taxes and service. These offers may still be worthwhile, but the down payment must be included in the comparison.
Best Buy and Walmart also carry new, open-box, refurbished, restored, and pre-owned iPhones. Those labels are not interchangeable. A marketplace listing may be sold by a third party, and a low price may indicate a locked, prepaid, or previously activated phone.
What is the cheapest new iPhone right now?
Apple’s current shopping page lists the iPhone 17e from $599, making it the cheapest new iPhone in this roundup. The iPhone 16 starts at $699 with carrier activation, and the iPhone 17 starts at $799 with carrier activation.
The cheapest device is not automatically the cheapest ownership choice. A refurbished iPhone 16 can cost less than a new 17e, while a carrier’s $0 phone can cost more overall if it requires a premium plan or a new line you do not need. Decide first whether you want the lowest upfront price, the lowest total cost, the newest hardware, or maximum flexibility.

Are refurbished iPhones worth considering?
Yes, a refurbished iPhone can be the lowest-total-cost option, but buy based on the seller’s protections rather than the word refurbished alone.
- Apple Certified Refurbished: Apple-backed products listed with a one-year warranty on Apple’s shopping page.
- Retailer-refurbished: condition, battery health, accessories, warranty provider, and grading vary by retailer and listing.
- Pre-owned or restored: potentially cheaper, but inspect the seller, activation status, battery policy, return period, and warranty more carefully.
Before buying, verify that the phone is not Activation Locked, that the IMEI is clean, that the battery-health guarantee is stated in writing, and that the return window gives you enough time to test the device. The Apple Certified Refurbished store is the most straightforward option when warranty coverage matters more than getting the absolute lowest price. Recent Best Buy and Walmart prices should be treated as changing inventory examples, not recommendations for every listing.
How to calculate the real cost of a “free” iPhone
Use this formula for the first credit term:
True first-term cost = upfront taxes and fees + phone payments after credits + required service cost during the credit period − guaranteed gift cards or rebates
For a proper comparison, write down all of the following:
- The phone’s full retail price and storage capacity.
- The monthly installment before promotional credits.
- The monthly credit and whether it lasts 24 or 36 months.
- The required plan price, including whether AutoPay, multiple lines, or a premium tier is necessary.
- Whether the offer requires a new line, a number port, or an existing-customer upgrade.
- The trade-in model, minimum value, condition, IMEI, and payoff requirements.
- Taxes and fees due at purchase.
- Activation or device-connection charges.
- What happens to the remaining device balance and credits if you leave early.
- Whether the phone is locked and when it becomes eligible for unlocking.
Worked device-cost examples
AT&T iPhone 17: the displayed $829.99 retail price works out to roughly $23.06 per month over 36 months. With up to $830 in promotional credits, the net device payment can be $0 per month. However, AT&T says tax is charged on the full price at sale, and the qualifying unlimited plan remains required for the credits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
T-Mobile iPhone 17: an $829.99 phone financed over 24 months is roughly $34.58 per month, offset by credits under the qualifying switcher offer. You still pay tax on the pre-credit price, a $35 device connection charge, and the cost of the qualifying Experience plan for the credit period.
Verizon iPhone 17: $829.99 over 36 months is roughly $23.06 per month before the promotional offset. The displayed offer requires a new line and eligible Unlimited plan. Verizon lists a $40 activation fee, with an online waiver or credit shown for the new-line offer.
If a carrier plan costs $30 more per month than the plan you would otherwise use, that difference alone is $720 over 24 months or $1,080 over 36 months. That is why the advertised device credit cannot be evaluated separately from the service price.

An unlocked iPhone usually costs more upfront but preserves flexibility. It is generally the better choice if you:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Switch carriers frequently.
- Use prepaid or MVNO service.
- Travel internationally and want to choose a local eSIM.
- Do not want to add a new line.
- May move, change employers, or otherwise cannot promise 24 or 36 months with one carrier.
Apple says an iPhone purchased from Apple is generally unlocked. A phone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon may remain carrier-locked until the carrier’s requirements are met, so confirm the policy before purchase if you plan to use another network.
Also note the SIM limitation on U.S. models: the iPhone 16, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro activate through eSIM only and do not have a physical SIM tray. International travelers should confirm that their destination carrier supports eSIM before buying a U.S. model. See Apple’s iPhone 17 purchase information for the current details.
Trade-in and carrier-deal checklist
Complete these steps before accepting a promotional offer:
- Confirm the exact device: model, storage, color, and generation must match the order and trade-in details.
- Check the old phone’s financing: determine whether it must be paid off before trade-in and whether paying it off affects existing credits.
- Read the eligibility language: distinguish upgrade, existing customer, new line, port-in, and trade-in offers.
- Check condition requirements: a cracked screen, damaged camera, incorrect IMEI, or activation lock can reduce or eliminate the promotional value.
- Document the trade-in: photograph the phone, record its IMEI, keep the shipping receipt, and save tracking information.
- Remove your data and Activation Lock: back up the phone, sign out of Apple Account, disable Find My, and erase the device only after confirming the backup.
- Save the offer terms: retain screenshots showing the retail price, credits, plan, trade-in, duration, and expiration date.
- Check the bill: confirm the promotional credit appears within the period stated by the carrier.
- Do not change plans casually: ask the carrier whether a new plan remains eligible before changing service.
- Ask about early payoff: T-Mobile explicitly says credits end if the device is paid off early on the referenced offer; verify the exact AT&T or Verizon terms for your order.
- Confirm the unlock policy: especially if the phone is purchased through a carrier or retailer rather than directly from Apple.
Which iPhone deal is best for you?
| If you are… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Looking for the lowest-priced new model | iPhone 17e at $599 | It is Apple’s lowest current starting price. |
| Trying to minimize total ownership cost | Discounted or refurbished iPhone 16 | It can avoid premium-plan costs and long credit commitments. |
| Buying unlocked | iPhone 17 at $829 | It combines current hardware, 256GB starting storage, and flexibility. |
| Already on AT&T with a qualifying trade-in | AT&T iPhone 17 or 17 Pro promotion | The device credits can be especially strong without requiring a switch. |
| Switching carriers without a trade-in | Verizon iPhone 17 or T-Mobile switcher offer | Both currently show no-trade-in paths, but require new lines and qualifying plans. |
| Want a premium iPhone | Compare T-Mobile’s up-to-$1,100 switcher offer with AT&T’s Pro trade-in offer | High retail prices make large credits more valuable, provided the service is appropriate. |
| Want a large screen and thin design | iPhone Air | Its design is the reason to buy it; a carrier promotion can reduce its price premium. |
Bottom line
For most buyers, the iPhone 17 at $829 from Apple is the best clean, unlocked deal, while the iPhone 17e at $599 is the cheapest new option. The iPhone 16 at $729 unlocked is the value alternative when you want to spend less without moving to the lower-tier 17e.

Carrier offers are potentially cheaper for the phone itself: AT&T is strongest for eligible trade-ins, T-Mobile is particularly attractive to switchers seeking a Pro or Air, and Verizon has a clear no-trade-in iPhone 17 new-line offer. But compare the entire service commitment—not just the monthly device payment. If you would not choose the required plan, an unlocked iPhone or a carefully vetted refurbished model is often the better personal-finance decision.
Carrier pricing, inventory, eligibility, and promotional end dates can change quickly. Recheck the final checkout terms before purchasing, especially AT&T’s displayed monthly prices, T-Mobile’s port-in and plan rules, Verizon’s new-line restrictions, and Walmart or Best Buy seller and condition details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest new iPhone right now?
Apple’s current U.S. shopping page lists the iPhone 17e from $599. The iPhone 16 starts at $699 with carrier activation, and the iPhone 17 starts at $799 with carrier activation. Prices and available configurations can change, so confirm the final Apple checkout price.
Is the iPhone 17 worth $100 more than the iPhone 16?
For many buyers, yes. The iPhone 17 starts at $799 with carrier activation or $829 connecting later, versus $699 or $729 for the iPhone 16. The 17 starts with 256GB storage and adds newer hardware and ProMotion. Choose the iPhone 16 if its Apple Intelligence, Camera Control, and A18-based feature set meets your needs and the $100 savings matters more.
Can I get an iPhone 17 without a trade-in?
Yes, current Verizon and T-Mobile offers show no-trade-in paths, but they require a new line and an eligible plan; T-Mobile’s displayed switcher offer also requires a number port. Verizon’s offer uses 36 monthly credits, while T-Mobile’s referenced offer uses 24. The phone is not economically free if the required service costs more than the plan you would otherwise choose.
Are free iPhones really free?
Usually, free means the carrier finances the phone and offsets the installment with monthly bill credits. The credits can last 24 or 36 months and may stop if you cancel the line, change plans, fail a trade-in requirement, or pay off the phone early. Taxes on the full retail price and activation or connection fees may still be due.
Is it better to buy an iPhone from Apple or a carrier?
Apple is usually better for an unlocked phone, transparent pricing, prepaid or MVNO service, and flexibility. A carrier can be better when you already want its qualifying plan, have an eligible trade-in, or are switching and can keep the required line for the entire credit term. Compare the service cost and not only the device credit.
Are refurbished iPhones safe to buy?
They can be, especially when purchased from a seller with a clear battery-health policy, warranty, return window, and activation-lock guarantee. Apple Certified Refurbished products carry Apple’s stated one-year warranty. Apple says an iPhone purchased from Apple is generally unlocked. Carrier-financed phones may remain locked until the carrier’s requirements are met. Confirm the status if you plan to switch carriers or use a local eSIM while traveling.
What happens if I leave my carrier before the credits end?
Promotional credits generally stop when the line is canceled or moved to an ineligible plan, and the remaining device balance may become due. The exact rules differ by offer. Review the order terms before canceling, changing plans, or paying off the phone.
Do iPhone carrier deals require a new line?
Some do and some do not. Verizon’s displayed no-trade-in iPhone 17 promotion requires a new line. T-Mobile’s referenced no-trade-in offer requires a new line and number port. AT&T’s iPhone 17 and 17 Pro offers can use eligible trade-ins, while other AT&T prices shown require a new line. Check whether your exact offer is tagged as an upgrade, existing-customer, new-line, port-in, or trade-in promotion.
Are taxes charged on the discounted iPhone price?
Carrier terms commonly charge tax on the phone’s full pre-credit retail price. AT&T and T-Mobile explicitly state this for the referenced offers. Activation or connection charges may also apply. Apple and retailer checkout taxes depend on the purchase and location.
Can I use a U.S. iPhone internationally?
Check both the phone’s unlock status and the destination carrier’s eSIM support. U.S. versions of the iPhone 16, 17e, 17, Air, and 17 Pro use eSIM only and have no physical SIM tray, so a destination carrier that requires a physical SIM may not work with the U.S. model.
The Bottom Line
Best unlocked deal: iPhone 17 for $829 from Apple. Cheapest new deal: iPhone 17e from $599. Best carrier route: choose AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon only when the qualifying plan, trade-in or port-in requirements, and full credit period fit your budget. A phone is not truly the best deal until its required service, taxes, fees, lock status, and early-exit cost have been included.
