For the 2024/25 Premier League season, each finishing place was worth approximately £2.6 million in merit payments. Champions Liverpool received £53.1 million in merit payments, while 20th-placed Southampton received £2.6 million. Those figures are not clubs’ total central payments or overall revenue.
How much does each Premier League position earn?
The Premier League describes merit payments as a descending scale: first place receives 20 times the basic payment, second receives 19 times, and the multiplier drops by one for each place down to 20th. For 2024/25, the league said the difference between positions was approximately £2.6 million.
The league’s published examples put Liverpool’s 2024/25 merit payment at £53.1 million and Southampton’s at £2.6 million. These are reported by the Premier League in its May 2026 explainer. The figures are approximate where stated; they should not be used to create exact amounts for every intermediate position.
What the merit payment includes—and what it does not
Merit payment is one part of the Premier League’s broadcast distribution, not a club’s complete share of central money. The league says domestic broadcast revenue is distributed on a 50:25:25 basis: 50% is shared equally among clubs, 25% is awarded according to final league position, and 25% is distributed as a facilities fee for televised matches. As a result, a club’s final position directly affects its merit component, but the examples of £53.1 million and £2.6 million do not represent its entire central payment. The Premier League’s 2024/25 central-payments announcement covers broadcast and central commercial revenues; it also says more than £550 million was committed to the wider game in 2024/25.
How international broadcast revenue is treated
The Premier League’s broadcast FAQ says current international broadcast revenue is shared equally among clubs. Future increases are subject to a position-based distribution formula, with the ratio between the highest and lowest amounts under that formula capped at 1.8:1. That cap applies to the described formula, not to every part of a club’s central payments.

Why the value of a place changes by season
The approximately £2.6 million figure applies to 2024/25, not every season. In a May 2025 feature, the league said an additional place had been worth about £2.8 million in the prior season. The two figures refer to different seasons and should not be treated as a fixed rate.
