Portsmouth FC’s March 2026 ownership change gave Michael Eisner’s three sons a combined 73.5% economic stake in Portsmouth FC LLC, but it did not hand them voting control. BBC Sport reported that Eisner retained full voting rights and the chairmanship, so the announcement formalised a family succession arrangement rather than an immediate change in who controls the club.
What changed in Portsmouth FC’s ownership?
On 9 March 2026, Breck, Eric and Anders Eisner each became a 24.5% shareholder in Portsmouth FC LLC. Their combined stake is 73.5%; Michael Eisner retained the remaining 26.5%. BBC Sport reported that the LLC owns both Portsmouth’s men’s and women’s teams. BBC Sport’s 9 March report described the transfer as part of Eisner’s succession planning.
Michael Eisner characterised the arrangement as formalising the family’s role: “This change in the ownership structure puts on paper what has existed from the very start – a family-focused approach to the ownership of this club.” He also said his sons and wife, Jane, had played an active role in ownership and had become Pompey fans.
Have Michael Eisner’s sons taken control?
No, not according to the March 2026 reporting. A majority share of the club’s economic ownership is not the same as having the votes that determine control. BBC Sport reported that Michael Eisner retained full voting rights, remained chairman and was the only person with a “significant interest” under EFL regulations.

| Question | What the March 2026 report says |
|---|---|
| Who holds the shares? | Breck, Eric and Anders Eisner hold 24.5% each; Michael Eisner holds 26.5%. |
| Who has the voting rights? | Michael Eisner retained full voting rights. |
| Who is chairman? | Michael Eisner remained chairman. |
| Who is the only holder of a “significant interest” under EFL regulations? | Michael Eisner, according to BBC Sport. |
That distinction is central to interpreting the announcement: the sons hold most of the economic stake collectively, while the report identifies their father as retaining formal voting control. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that the sons took control of Portsmouth in March 2026.
Will the change affect how Portsmouth operates?
BBC Radio Solent Portsmouth commentator Andrew Moon wrote in contemporaneous BBC analysis that the club’s statement described a change in “economic” ownership and assessed that it would not change how Portsmouth operated, with Michael Eisner still in control. That is an assessment about the announcement, not a guarantee about later club decisions. The reporting does not establish that the transfer brought a new manager, board direction, budget, transfer policy or stadium plan. Read Andrew Moon’s BBC analysis.

The stated rationale was succession planning and putting the family-focused ownership approach on paper. The reporting does not establish a separate tax, inheritance, financing or sporting motive for the share transfer.
What do Portsmouth’s finances have to do with the announcement?
They provide background on the club and its ownership, but the figures below do not show that the 9 March share transfer changed Portsmouth’s finances or sporting policy.

- £4.36m loss: Portsmouth’s reported loss for the 2024–25 financial year, as covered by BBC Sport in March 2026.
- £24.5m turnover: the turnover in the latest accounts discussed in that report.
- £54m invested: the amount BBC Sport reported the Eisner family had invested since buying Portsmouth in 2017.
BBC Sport’s 18 March 2026 financial report also quoted chief executive Andrew Cullen saying owner loans formed part of the ownership’s long-term succession strategy and that there was no intention to seek repayment “for some time.” That comment concerns owner loans; it is not evidence that the share transfer itself changed operating policy.
In the same report, Michael Eisner warned about Championship finances and said the combined operating loss for 24 Championship clubs in 2023–24 was £411m. That was his figure as quoted by BBC Sport, not a Portsmouth-only loss or an independently verified league-wide statistic.

What should supporters take away?
- The three Eisner sons acquired a combined 73.5% economic stake in Portsmouth FC LLC.
- Michael Eisner retained 26.5%, full voting rights and the chairmanship in the March 2026 reporting.
- Portsmouth presented the transfer as succession planning within the family, not a new outside takeover.
- Contemporaneous BBC analysis expected operational continuity, but the announcement alone cannot establish what future club policy will be.
- Reported account figures and owner-loan comments are useful financial context, not proof that the ownership transfer caused a financial or sporting change.
For brief historical context, the Pompey Supporters’ Trust approved Michael Eisner and Tornante’s takeover proposal in 2017. The March 2026 announcement concerned a change in the family’s shareholding, not a new takeover. BBC’s 2017 coverage of the takeover proposal.
